I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Graham Palin

Back when the McCain camp was firmly pumping out oppo criticizing Barack Obama's experience, they knocked the Democratic nominee for never having been to Iraq or Afghanistan. And when Obama was poised to go to Iraq and Afghanistan, the McCain camp derided Obama for coming to strategic conclusions in advance of his arrival. And when Obama's trip turned into a smashing success, the McCain camp poked fun at how the trip was too successful. Somehow, America allowed this nonsense to happen.

But now that McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice president, the "experience" argument has been torn into a million tiny little slivers. And that has forced McCain's surrogates to furtively scramble to pick up enough shreds with which to make some papier-mache.

One such surrogate was Lindsey Graham, out in force this Sunday, attempting to apply the new McCain alchemical hoodoo to Sarah Palin's lack of substantive foreign policy experience. ThinkProgress records the relevant exchange:

BLITZER: Has she met with world leaders like you have, like Biden has? Has she really gone around the world and done any of those things?

GRAHAM: I don't know where she's traveled to ... But it's not meeting people that matters. You know, President Bush met President Putin. And I don't think it matters just meeting people. You look at people's judgment.

One should note Graham's "I don't know where she's traveled to" statement, which is further proof that no vetting of Palin seems to have taken place.

Graham adds, "Governor Palin took on Ted Stevens. If she can take him on, she can take on the Russians." Graham also offered that bon mot on This Week, and at the time, I mused, "That's just the dumbest thing I have ever heard." After I wrote that, I thought better of it, and considered whether I may have been speaking prematurely. After all, just as Palin has enjoyed a coincidental proximity to Russia, I have five years experience living across the street from an Italian bodega, so maybe I have the sufficient experience to make delicious cannolis and just don't know it yet.

Unfortunately for Palin and Graham, however, I can now reassert the essential stupidity of that statement, because, as it turns out, Palin doesn't have that good a record where standing up to Ted Stevens is concerned:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state's political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin's name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.," a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

...

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

So, I'd say that Vladimir Putin has little to fear from America's Next Top Caribou Huntress.

Back when the McCain camp was firmly pumping out oppo criticizing Barack Obama's experience, they knocked the Democratic nominee for never having been to Iraq or Afghanistan. And when Obama was poise...

Media continue omitting Obama's experience of 6 years in the Illinois Senate, just mentioning his limited time in the U.S. Senate (and even the latter trumps Palin's by a world) What the hey!!! The facts still don't seem to be of concern to the media.

Those facts don't shape the narrative the media wants to use to get ratings. They have to keep this race close - good example: At the DNC the big story of the first few days were PUMAs and how upset they were and how there were tons of them. So the narrative starts - The democrats are in shambles and Obama needs to pick up the pieces with the help of the Clintons. Even though the PUMAs and pissed off Clinton supporters weren't as much of a problem as they were portrayed to be, the media needed a narrative. Then the Clintons speak, and Obama tops it all off and the party is united! That's a quick little story of triumph, diversity, and the human spirit - sounds like Hollywood huh? That's our media, they need a story to get the ratings, and the slaughter of the GOP the facts would produce is not going to do it.

I saw her too. Me thinks she has been listening to Obama.

McCain's campaign manager on MSNBC this morning, when grilled about Palin's lack of experience. .

"It's about judgment, not experience."

Whoops!! I guarantee that's on The Dailey Show.

It is hilariously pathetic to see the republican talking heads defining woeful lack of experience as executive talent. Just think of the responsiblities of mayor of this Alaskan VILLAGE......duh.

My favorite was Cindy McCain saying that Alaska is close to Russia, so she has foreign policy experience! You know these people hate internet video and YouTube.

Or how about when she said it's time to take off the Repug hat and put on the American hat.

Michele Obama would have been crucified for a statement like that, oh yeah she was when he statement was taken out of context.

The talking points on Palin coming from McCain surrogates at this convention are completely absurd. The media defers instead of challenging them or pointing out the fact that the emperor has no clothes. I don't think most people are buying what they are dishing out.

It is becoming more and more clear that even the Repugs know that they are going to get a big old can of whup-ass opened up on them November 4.

"...if she can take him on she can take on the Russians."

And thus the Cold War propaganda machine slowly gears itself up again...

"The Russians", tossed so callously with such a clear certainty that they are an "enemy" just like the administration has been doing with Iran for the last year.

The VP is an appointed post -

Obama won the Primaries and is now running for President of the United States under the nomination o the Democratic Party.

He is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
President of Harvard Law Review,
Professor of Constitution Law at University of Chicago (the one with the most Nobel Laureates in the country),
a brilliant, dynamic campaigner,
8 years in the State Illinois Senate,
2 years in the United States Senate -

More experience than Abraham Lincoln when he won the Presidency.....

Can Palin compare at any level???
The GOP are desperate.....

AND presides over a campaign budget of many millions of dollars each month, managing to spend wisely and judiciously!

NO drama hogs hired in his campaign. Smooth and consistent message. And don't forget, Barack's "MAVERICK" status of taking on the entire Democratic Party that included BOTH Clintons and WINNING!!! Bret and Bart Maverick would be proud!

Who's the real maverick in this campaign anyway?

And somebody needs to tell the Repubs to QUIT stealing Obama's message. Geeze. Get an idea of your own why don't cha?

Obama's Illinois senate district is larger in population than the entire State of Alaska as well. He has experience representing a much larger constituency than she does.

The Republicans would not want to recognize Obama's abilities but since they have been whacko doctors of spins after how many decades and idiotically successful at that, why not make it a career.

So many are not surprised by the turn of events even defending the choice of Palin moving it front and center for all to see SHE HAS DAMN EEXCUTIVE experience.

The demise of the Republicans have been written on the walls clearly, if they have not recognized it yet.

Mr. Obama has been nominated fair and square and who could question the thick resume of Biden. The Palin appointment pales in comparison. If i were in her shoes, her daughter doesn't need this scandal ridden pregnancy brouhaha...but since perhaps she was AWED by the job offer, then it is not worth it to subject the child to greater embarassment if she really thought of her daughter first hand.

Surely the greed for power bites brutally.

unfortunately, no one from the media is asking for it. a narrative relating to it must be opened up first before it can get discussed. the msm wont do it on their own.

with the mccain houses, the narrative was started by somebody from the politico who asked about it. and it went viral from there.

Jason.
I consider you one of the best people involved with Huffington. When I use a word like flail somewhere and see it used by the quality of person/writer that you are., I feel a bit less insane (only because when so few see what a person sees so readily, one must question their own sanity. But I hear that is a good thing when one questions their own sanity.)

I do not know if this will see the light of day, and I certainly do not know if I will look to see if there will be any responses. I just may though.

Michael

PS: Please keep up the great work!
