I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Graham Palin

Back when the McCain camp was firmly pumping out oppo criticizing Barack Obama's experience, they knocked the Democratic nominee for never having been to Iraq or Afghanistan. And when Obama was poised to go to Iraq and Afghanistan, the McCain camp derided Obama for coming to strategic conclusions in advance of his arrival. And when Obama's trip turned into a smashing success, the McCain camp poked fun at how the trip was too successful. Somehow, America allowed this nonsense to happen.

But now that McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice president, the "experience" argument has been torn into a million tiny little slivers. And that has forced McCain's surrogates to furtively scramble to pick up enough shreds with which to make some papier-mache.

One such surrogate was Lindsey Graham, out in force this Sunday, attempting to apply the new McCain alchemical hoodoo to Sarah Palin's lack of substantive foreign policy experience. ThinkProgress records the relevant exchange:

BLITZER: Has she met with world leaders like you have, like Biden has? Has she really gone around the world and done any of those things?

GRAHAM: I don't know where she's traveled to ... But it's not meeting people that matters. You know, President Bush met President Putin. And I don't think it matters just meeting people. You look at people's judgment.

One should note Graham's "I don't know where she's traveled to" statement, which is further proof that no vetting of Palin seems to have taken place.

Graham adds, "Governor Palin took on Ted Stevens. If she can take him on, she can take on the Russians." Graham also offered that bon mot on This Week, and at the time, I mused, "That's just the dumbest thing I have ever heard." After I wrote that, I thought better of it, and considered whether I may have been speaking prematurely. After all, just as Palin has enjoyed a coincidental proximity to Russia, I have five years experience living across the street from an Italian bodega, so maybe I have the sufficient experience to make delicious cannolis and just don't know it yet.

Unfortunately for Palin and Graham, however, I can now reassert the essential stupidity of that statement, because, as it turns out, Palin doesn't have that good a record where standing up to Ted Stevens is concerned:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state's political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin's name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.," a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

...

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

So, I'd say that Vladimir Putin has little to fear from America's Next Top Caribou Huntress.

Back when the McCain camp was firmly pumping out oppo criticizing Barack Obama's experience, they knocked the Democratic nominee for never having been to Iraq or Afghanistan. And when Obama was poise...

It is to the point the McCain campaign is really insulting the media's intelligence. Let's see if the MSM continues to play ball.

I've actually been surprised by the presses overt incredulity during these interviews. It seems they don't mind treating the public like idiots, but they get all fired up when operatives treat them like idiots. One of them actually said Palin was as credible a choice as Condi because she had skills that Condi didn't have. Would have worked too, if the next question wasn't "what might those skills be?"

When you refer to an accomplished working mother as "America's Next Top Caribou Huntress" you come off sounding really condescending. Other reporters on MSNBC have called her the beauty queen and similar stuff (which is accurate but not the point.) That kind of thing that will only help push independent women to he Republican ticket.

Note to Dems: Talk about her positions, not her colorful life and certainly not her children.

If this election is about personality -- a referendum on Obama or Palin, the Republicans win.

If it's about the fact that the last 8 years have been disastrous and McCain supported 90% of the Bush agenda, the Democrats win.

To quote Star Wars: "Stay on target."

ok, how about one of her positions is that she is a Dominionist. You know what that is? It's someone who wishes to turn the United States of America into a theocracy. Just like Iran is. NICE.

No, I do not know what a "Dominionist" is. Palin is a strict conservative believer. She wants government to comport with (her) religious principles, is worrisome. But claiming that she wants to establish a theocracy in the USA "just like Iran," a country which is run by religious ministers prohibiting dissent and forbidding free elections and an independent legislature and judiciary, sounds far fetched. It only arouses more interest in her.

One poll now has Palin along with Obama as the politicians Americans most want to meet. So, why give her more attention?

In any event, my point remains true. Work to get Obama elected.

George, you have it right. By mocking Palin, bloggers draw more attention to her. Democrats are wasting time and energy obsessing on her. The people will not vote on whether they like Palin. They will vote on whether they prefer Obama or McCain. Obama's first ad was dead-on: simply acknowledging McCain had chosen her without naming her or criticizing her. Get back to the campaign.

One of my teacher told me a long time ago... what you see in the media is a distraction for what is really going on, I found this on another blog and thought that it was interesting.

WAKE UP AMERICA. WAKE UP AMERICA. WAKE UP AMERICA. WAKE UP AMERICA. THEY"RE DOING IT AGAIN JUST LIKE 2000 and 2004.

People wake up. Can't you see what CARL ROVE is doing. Its about divide and conquer for the repu. They know they can not win on the issues that Americans are facing today so they create a diversion and stupid Americans are falling for it. Before you know it this election will be all about abortion not about the mortgage crisis, energy, the war, healthcare and the exploitation of the constitution.

I 'm sitting here watching Republican female surrogates on Larry King Live attempt to defend McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. I just want to say to Senator McCain from the bottom of my heart:

Thank You! Thank you! Thank You!

You know Ms. Lindsay had better make his man look good. Even if he's jealous of the new woman in Mack's life.

The argument for Pailn is already in effect. The GOP will now promote the notion that if you have any disagreement on her selection, you are a sexist. Just like those that said that they couldn't criticize Obama because his defenders would%2

It's not what you say, it's the way you say it. If a person says - he thinks he's MLK and MLK was fine but it took a president to do what MLK could not. That's racist. If you say that he's an empty suit - that's not necessarily racist (at least I can't tell where you're coming from with it).
If you say that this woman is not a reformer because she sucked up to the man now under investigation for extortion and corruption plus she was chairman of the board of his org for 3 years - that's fine.
If you say she can't even make a good judgment about running for office with a newborn how is she going to run the white house that could be seen as sexist.

It's up to us to frame the argument - or to re-frame it.

Like I've said before, even if she had stood up to Sen. Stevens (which apparently, she hasn't), the comparison between him and the Russians is ridiculous. Ted Stevens doesn't have a nuclear arsenal (unless he got it as a present under the table), and the Russians do.

They raked Obama over the coals for weeks in negative ads for being a "rock star." Now they are referring to Sarah Palin as the Republican's Rock Star. These people are as dumb as a doorknob and wake up in a new world everyday.
