I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Graham Palin

Back when the McCain camp was firmly pumping out oppo criticizing Barack Obama's experience, they knocked the Democratic nominee for never having been to Iraq or Afghanistan. And when Obama was poised to go to Iraq and Afghanistan, the McCain camp derided Obama for coming to strategic conclusions in advance of his arrival. And when Obama's trip turned into a smashing success, the McCain camp poked fun at how the trip was too successful. Somehow, America allowed this nonsense to happen.

But now that McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice president, the "experience" argument has been torn into a million tiny little slivers. And that has forced McCain's surrogates to furtively scramble to pick up enough shreds with which to make some papier-mache.

One such surrogate was Lindsey Graham, out in force this Sunday, attempting to apply the new McCain alchemical hoodoo to Sarah Palin's lack of substantive foreign policy experience. ThinkProgress records the relevant exchange:

BLITZER: Has she met with world leaders like you have, like Biden has? Has she really gone around the world and done any of those things?

GRAHAM: I don't know where she's traveled to ... But it's not meeting people that matters. You know, President Bush met President Putin. And I don't think it matters just meeting people. You look at people's judgment.

One should note Graham's "I don't know where she's traveled to" statement, which is further proof that no vetting of Palin seems to have taken place.

Graham adds, "Governor Palin took on Ted Stevens. If she can take him on, she can take on the Russians." Graham also offered that bon mot on This Week, and at the time, I mused, "That's just the dumbest thing I have ever heard." After I wrote that, I thought better of it, and considered whether I may have been speaking prematurely. After all, just as Palin has enjoyed a coincidental proximity to Russia, I have five years experience living across the street from an Italian bodega, so maybe I have the sufficient experience to make delicious cannolis and just don't know it yet.

Unfortunately for Palin and Graham, however, I can now reassert the essential stupidity of that statement, because, as it turns out, Palin doesn't have that good a record where standing up to Ted Stevens is concerned:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state's political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin's name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.," a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

...

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

So, I'd say that Vladimir Putin has little to fear from America's Next Top Caribou Huntress.

Back when the McCain camp was firmly pumping out oppo criticizing Barack Obama's experience, they knocked the Democratic nominee for never having been to Iraq or Afghanistan. And when Obama was poise...

I always thought it would be Lindsay Graham as V.P.
I didn't know the poor guy was single.
He looked so pathetic in this CNN interview.
I've lost any respect I had for him.

It's true that the Republicans hate the citizens of America.

WAKE UP AMERICA. WAKE UP AMERICA. WAKE UP AMERICA. WAKE UP AMERICA. THEY"RE DOING IT AGAIN JUST LIKE 2000 and 2004.

People wake up. Can't you see what CARL ROVE is doing. Its about divide and conquer for the repu. They know they can not win on the issues that Americans are facing today so they create a diversion and stupid Americans are falling for it. Before you know it this election will be all about abortion not about the mortgage crisis, energy, the war, healthcare and the exploitation of the constitution.

One more question: I have noticed today that anyone of the Republicans interviewed by the media, or in a discussion on the corporate media channels when asked even the most reasonable question that frankly THEY should have asked about Palin, if they don't like the question OR don't have an answer, they immediately say "I am offended by that question." Really? Is this how it's going to be? Can't ask any questions because Palin is too sensitive or any questioning of her abilities is sexist? As a woman, I take issue with that.

And the media fails to continue the experience question as well.

They're not only failing to question her experience -- Katie Couric and CBS News seem bent on trying to bury Barack Obama beneath Palin's "experience". Earlier tonight, Katie was interviewing some twit from the McCain campaign. Ms. Twit was going on and on about all the wonderful "executive" type things that governors do. She closed by saying that of course, Sarah Palin "...has never called a meeting on the war in Afghanistan -- but neither has Barack Obama, and he's in charge of that." Did Wonder Anchor call her on that, explaining that Senator Obama is Chairman of the Subcommittee on EUROPEAN Affairs? (The last time I looked at a map, Afghanistan was NOT in Europe, and besides, Joe Biden said if there were any meetings on Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. they would be before the entire committee and HE would be the one to call them.) Well, did she correct Ms. Twit? //Crickets// If she can't get her journalistic s**t together enough to learn some basic facts about the Presidential candidates, she has no business calling herself a network news anchor.

So true, and I have a feeling that those some men wouldn't even consider voting for McCain if they really believed she might have to take over as president. They probably view her as VP as more like McCain's "secretary".

I used to think the American administration couldn't become more of an international laughing stock - until now.

McCain's choice of Vice President - if it hasn't sealed the fate of his candidacy - has sealed the fate of how Americans will be viewed and treated by the rest of the world: As a bunch of clueless idiots who couldn't pick a leader if their reputation as a 'super power' depended on it. Oh wait - you already did that.

And that American superpower thing? That's gone too.

Americans have already sealed their fate by voting for cliches and against poor people. This is because they still believe they are rich.

Don't blame McCain. He recognizes that America wants more of the same.

This is SO MUCH FUN, seeing the hapless Lindsay Graham, who is about as bright as a box of hair, trying to pretend that Sarah Palin has foreign policy credentials. I will thank John McCain every day for the next two months for choosing her, for providing us with the delightful spectacle of leading Republicans having to pitch this absurd choice. If the Republicans have any shred of credibility left after the past eight years, McCain's campaign is going destroy whatever is left of it.

Ever wonder why it is that Republicans get away with all of this? You watch. Somehow this joke of a selection for VP will work to their advantage. Its like the electorate gives them a free pass. I've always said it is easier for utter incompetents to win elections because they do not have to deal with the complexity of a world most Americans (including them) do not understand. Most Americans love the "garbage" they are fed by the incompetent lightweights who are just like them. Those who are smart and able have the disadvantage in American politics because we have a politically illiterate electorate.

You are so right!! Also, democrates are so disorganised. Laura Bush just said "hands off" Paulin. Why? because she is a woman? But she is running as a veep, if she has to be treated with kid glove, you think the rest of the world will do this too? I hope someone hammer her to the ground.
We need to show our fighting spirit. Dems do not want to be known as patsy, right?

that's great! love the comment!

it's the system Republicans have in place, which includes the corporate media and empty suits that are willing to repeat any talking point, no matter how ridiculous, over and over again. Democrats do not understand how to communicate in this way. Most Democratic politicians want to state their own opinions in rambling paragraphs. To them, complex issues deserve complex answers. I suppose this is true if the goal were to win debates. But I thought Democrats were trying to win elections. Until Democrats get off their intellectual high horses and learn to speak more persuasively to misinformed Americans, they will continue to get their butts kicked.

Yes, yes, I recognize that the last 2 presidential elections were stolen. but it shouldn't have been close enough to steal given the issues and the opponent.
