I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Graham Palin

Back when the McCain camp was firmly pumping out oppo criticizing Barack Obama's experience, they knocked the Democratic nominee for never having been to Iraq or Afghanistan. And when Obama was poised to go to Iraq and Afghanistan, the McCain camp derided Obama for coming to strategic conclusions in advance of his arrival. And when Obama's trip turned into a smashing success, the McCain camp poked fun at how the trip was too successful. Somehow, America allowed this nonsense to happen.

But now that McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice president, the "experience" argument has been torn into a million tiny little slivers. And that has forced McCain's surrogates to furtively scramble to pick up enough shreds with which to make some papier-mache.

One such surrogate was Lindsey Graham, out in force this Sunday, attempting to apply the new McCain alchemical hoodoo to Sarah Palin's lack of substantive foreign policy experience. ThinkProgress records the relevant exchange:

BLITZER: Has she met with world leaders like you have, like Biden has? Has she really gone around the world and done any of those things?

GRAHAM: I don't know where she's traveled to ... But it's not meeting people that matters. You know, President Bush met President Putin. And I don't think it matters just meeting people. You look at people's judgment.

One should note Graham's "I don't know where she's traveled to" statement, which is further proof that no vetting of Palin seems to have taken place.

Graham adds, "Governor Palin took on Ted Stevens. If she can take him on, she can take on the Russians." Graham also offered that bon mot on This Week, and at the time, I mused, "That's just the dumbest thing I have ever heard." After I wrote that, I thought better of it, and considered whether I may have been speaking prematurely. After all, just as Palin has enjoyed a coincidental proximity to Russia, I have five years experience living across the street from an Italian bodega, so maybe I have the sufficient experience to make delicious cannolis and just don't know it yet.

Unfortunately for Palin and Graham, however, I can now reassert the essential stupidity of that statement, because, as it turns out, Palin doesn't have that good a record where standing up to Ted Stevens is concerned:

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state's political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

Palin's name is listed on 2003 incorporation papers of the "Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service, Inc.," a 527 group that could raise unlimited funds from corporate donors. The group was designed to serve as a political boot camp for Republican women in the state. She served as one of three directors until June 2005, when her name was replaced on state filings.

...

Palin, an anti-corruption crusader in Alaska, had called on Stevens to be open about the issues behind the investigation. But she also held a joint news conference with him in July, before he was indicted, to make clear she had not abandoned him politically.

So, I'd say that Vladimir Putin has little to fear from America's Next Top Caribou Huntress.

JOHN MCBUSH has post traumatic stress disorder...he's had it for 40 years....he is clearly incapable of making important decisions....i mean look...he chose the mother of the family in 'Deliverence' to be his running mate. he could have just as easily asked lynne spears...she didn't teach her girls not to have children out of wedlock either

This a classic case of buffoonery gone catastrophically bad. It is amazing how big name republicans have put their and their party reputation on the line for someone who has not one hour of foreign policy experience. The example the comes to mind, the republicans are trying to sell the american people a new car, but they themselves are not sure if the engine works. In other words, tell are you it is raining, when they are really urinating on your feet.

You are correct with the car salesman analogy. Would you buy a used car from Lindsey Graham?

Seriously. I've heard more than one Republican say, "She has as much experience as Obama!"

Um--no. Not really. Maybe we should assign points--1 point for each year of political service in a small town. 2 points for each year of political service in a large city. 3 points (and it should be more) for each year of political service on the state level. And 4 points (also should be more) for each year of political service on the national level.

Obama (and Abraham Lincoln) have far more points than Palin. And Obama's backup also has far more years of service.

As for those who say, "But SHE served as a GOVERNOR, not some mere senator" (often neglecting to point out that she was elected two years ago but started serving 18 months ago)? AH--so you're saying she's also more experienced than McCain?

Go figure.

Everyone keeps trying to compare her to B-rock but she is the match up to JB.
B-rock is handling his counterpart on the ticket. As a matter of fact, his counter is trying to keep up with him. Can she keep up with her's? How does her experience match up to JB's. That is the real question.

Lying by omission is called deceit where I'm from, IF McCain knew about Palin's daughter and it's a non issue, why not put it on the table in the beginning? The last major lie and deceit we got from a Republican took us into a multi-billion dollar war with lives lost for oil.

This lady is a joke, their party is in trouble, so work your asses off for the Obama campaign, and lets get this thing done right! So this is what a maverick does, whatever MIGHT politically help him when he's grasping at straws. PATHETIC. Even Mike Huckabee was a better choice, and I hate that guy.

With the selection and now selling of Sara Palin, I am reminded of the episode of "Dallas" where Sue Ellen tells JR he saw him cheating and JRs response was Sue Ellen don't believe your lying eyes. More to the point these people are going to try and sell us on this women having experience when in fact there is no useful experience for her to be one step or heart beat from being president.

The Karl Rove and James Dobson Spin Machines are alive and well!

Democrats just don't get it! Most people do not vote on issues, and that's how Republicans keep winning - you can claim the high road tell left wing sites not to attack, but that does not get you in the White House. Look at the bush Mccain fight in 2000! Most americans do not bother to try to find out the truth, most "journalists" give republicans a free pass and let them get away with all the crazy comments; Republicans know that.. and they take advantage of it.

I was shocked when Bush/Cheny got a 2nd term but I will not be shocked if Bush/Cheny/Mccain/Palin get a third term! Stranger things have happened in this country.

The Republican base is now energized with an extreme right wing candidate...Even with all these "scandals" coming out, notice that Republicans are spinning it and many in the public are showing sympathy....next strategy claim the left wing is attacking her because she is a woman, put gender back on the table for discussion..........and tease Biden into a fight during the VP debates so we can raise the sexism card.

I suggest that Democrats do not underestimate this ticket....

McCain had completed flight training and was deployed to the Mediterranean. "He was flying low one day when he decided to have some fun," Leahy wrote. He dropped so low that he knocked down power lines over southern Spain, cutting off electricity in the area. McCain later referred to his own behavior as "daredevil clowning" and said he had created "a small international incident."
Leahy wrote that McCain had a "desultory performance" in the air. On the face of it, the incident in Spain stands out as an example of rash, poor judgment. The other two also raise questions. How much was a problem with the equipment, how much was pilot error? What about McCain's responses: What do they tell us about his temperament?
