Laura On Katrina: Mistakes Were Made
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The soon-retiring President Bush, who was supposed to address the start of the Republican National Convention this evening, instead flew to Texas for a review of staging areas for the recovery after Hurricane Gustav, now a Category Three storm starting to lash the Gulf Coast around New Orleans. Air Force One lifted off from Andrews Air Force Base at 8:30 am EDT.
Laura Bush, here in his place for the start of an abbreviated convention limited to only official party business today, was on her way to a breakfast of the Louisiana delegation in Minneapolis with Cindy McCain, wife of the party's presidential nominee to be, Sen. John McCain. The first lady took a turn first at national television - where she addressed the "mistakes made'' and "lessons learned'' after Hurricane Katrina three years ago.
"There were lots of mistakes and they were on every level,'' Laura Bush said on CBS News' The Early Show this morning. "They were local, they were statewide and there were certainly federal mistakes. But we learned from those...''
