Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughters from left, Piper, Willow and Bristol are seen Dec. 8, 2006, at the Governor's mansion, in Juneau, Alaska. John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, an announcement campaign aides said was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's. ST. PAUL, Minn. — Sarah Palin's path to the Republican ticket started with her name on a list _ and a team of some 25 people poring through public records searching for trouble spots without her knowledge. Then came the 70-question survey and a nearly three-hour interview.

The review officially ended Thursday, when John McCain asked the Alaska governor to be his running mate.

In the days since, Republicans and Democrats have privately questioned whether the Arizona senator chose the first-term governor without fully looking into her background. McCain's campaign has vehemently defended the review.

Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., the lawyer who conducted the review, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination before McCain chose her. Asked whether everything that came up as a possible red flag during the review already has been made public, Culvahouse said: "I think so. Yeah, I think so. Correct."

Stoking the notion of a rushed examination, a timeline issued by the campaign indicated that McCain initially met Palin in February, then held one phone conversation with her last week before inviting her to Arizona, where he met with her a second time and offered her the job.

Raising additional questions was the campaign's disclosure Monday that Palin's unmarried 17-year-old daughter was pregnant, and reports that Palin's husband, Todd, had been arrested in 1986, when he was 22, for driving under the influence of alcohol.

McCain's campaign has dispatched a team of a dozen communications operatives and lawyers to Alaska.

Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a "jump team" to the eventual running mate's home state to work with the nominee's staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.

Story continues below

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.

For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn't request paper archives for Palin's hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public.

Among the findings: Palin had once received a citation for fishing without a license.

Reports on each candidate _ 40-some pages and single spaced _ then were reviewed by McCain, Schmidt, campaign manager Rick Davis, and top advisers Mark Salter and Charlie Black.

Palin then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 "very intrusive" questions, Culvahouse said. She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns. The campaign also checked her credit.

Culvahouse then conducted a nearly three-hour interview. He said the first thing Palin volunteered was that her daughter was pregnant, and she also quickly disclosed her husband's two-decade-old DUI arrest.

The public search also unearthed details of the Legislature's investigation into the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner, allegedly because he would not fire Palin's former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

Culvahouse said he asked follow-up questions, and "spent a lot of time with her lawyer" on the matter.

"We came out of it knowing all that we could know at the time," he said.

Throughout the process, the campaign said, Davis had multiple conversations with Palin.

The pregnancy and the DUI should be off-limits. What disturbs me is the poor judgment Palin seems to have displayed in office, if stories of loyalty oaths and clearcutting government are true. And what really, really deserves examination, IMO, is who's paying for McCain's lawyers and communications operatives to delay the internal Alaska investigation until after the election. THAT is a problem

Agreed, it really isn't relevant, and starts to look like you're desparate to find even the tiniest flaw when there are plenty of legitimate issues. Even if it had been her DUI not her husband's, it's 20 years old - who cares? 20 months ago (if it was hers) would be different, but this just looks petty. Her current views and performance as mayor and governor are supplying plenty of material - leave the teen pregnancy and hubby's very old DUI out of it.

Again, the teen aged daughter is a distraction tactic to scare us all away from the really, REALLY bad news here, that Gov. Palin is one loose canon and a disaster as far as VP nominees go.

But I must say, Kudos and Congrats are in order for A.G. Culvahouse, who is currently top contender for the "DNC's Best Little Buddy Award." So warmest wishes there, for sure.

McCain did not even have the decency to come out and defend PALIN. It was Obama who told the media to back off.

Evidently they didn't research how many earmarks Alaska politicians deliver to their state yearly.

It's is quite alright that Sen McCain doesn't have the slightest idea of what is going on, even with his own campaign, let alone America. The nomination of Sarah is equivalent of a "Hail Mary pass, or trying to kick a 60 yd. field goal into the wind. If this is an expample of the leadership McCain will provide America, we will all be in big doo-doo.

End the insanity, VOTE OBAMA in NOV

The Mavericks are trying to stall the investigation in Alaska until after the election. We have seen this one before.

Much like Rove and the GOP "stalled" the investigation into Bush's TANG records.
They need time to concoct a "fresh narrative".

Where I come from (mid-State New York) people who are described as mavericks or reformers are typically understood to be troublemakers, misfits, selfish, self-agrandizing, self-important or childish people for whom it is either their way or no way. These are not qualities I seek in either a President or Vice President. I do not understand all of this enthusiasm for the branding of McCain and Palin as maverick and reformer, respectively. To me it signifies that they do not get along with others and are not team players. I'm just saying.....

How much does Sarah Palin love America? Seems she was part of a Party advocating that Alaska break away from the Union, and only joined the Republican Party preor to entering the race for mayor of a town of under ten thousand.

If this horrendous choice was intentional, with full knowledge of the potential controversy, then it is a red herring, meant to distract the electorate. And it has succeeded. The real issues at stake have been submerged under the flood of inquiries into Palin's eligibility. It is a shame that she would have subjected her family to this intense scrutiny, but this woman knew full well that the focus would be on her personal life.

This has to be part of GOP strategy.

After McCain made his selection on VP, I went out and did a search on Sarah to see what qualified her for VP. My search immediately came up with Troopergate.

I am not a wiz at the computer but I was able to find out this info for myself.

It's a little late to be vetting her now. It all comes down to Judgement.

This was McCain's first test as a Presidential nominee. You failed.

Not only did she "push" she filed a lawsuit against the US government to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list. This is only one of many extreme things this woman has done. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i536jfOol1gh7ago3QLE3rrEvhZgD92BSE780

Sounds like as much thought and honesty went into McCain's pick as went into our invasion of Iraq.

They're trying to prevent a 'swift boat' type situation from occurring.

There are lots of angry people with old scores to settle. AK's political landscape has changed dramatically in the past few years due to all of the corruption.
Palin's made no friends, and has aggravated big oil by bucking the gop and taxing big oil.

It's been a boon to the citizens but, as we can clearly see, has not made her many friends...

It's another shrewd move by McCain. Instead of letting the boils fester, he's drowning them with peroxide.

If they feel froggy enough to jump, knowing the repercussions, then good luck.. Kerry should have done the same thing..

Then we wouldn't even be talking about this.
