Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's daughters from left, Piper, Willow and Bristol are seen Dec. 8, 2006, at the Governor's mansion, in Juneau, Alaska. John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, an announcement campaign aides said was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's. ST. PAUL, Minn. — Sarah Palin's path to the Republican ticket started with her name on a list _ and a team of some 25 people poring through public records searching for trouble spots without her knowledge. Then came the 70-question survey and a nearly three-hour interview.

The review officially ended Thursday, when John McCain asked the Alaska governor to be his running mate.

In the days since, Republicans and Democrats have privately questioned whether the Arizona senator chose the first-term governor without fully looking into her background. McCain's campaign has vehemently defended the review.

Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., the lawyer who conducted the review, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that Palin underwent a "full and complete" examination before McCain chose her. Asked whether everything that came up as a possible red flag during the review already has been made public, Culvahouse said: "I think so. Yeah, I think so. Correct."

Stoking the notion of a rushed examination, a timeline issued by the campaign indicated that McCain initially met Palin in February, then held one phone conversation with her last week before inviting her to Arizona, where he met with her a second time and offered her the job.

Raising additional questions was the campaign's disclosure Monday that Palin's unmarried 17-year-old daughter was pregnant, and reports that Palin's husband, Todd, had been arrested in 1986, when he was 22, for driving under the influence of alcohol.

McCain's campaign has dispatched a team of a dozen communications operatives and lawyers to Alaska.

Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser, said the campaign always planned to send a "jump team" to the eventual running mate's home state to work with the nominee's staff, help with information requests from local and national reporters, and answer questions about documents that were part of the review.

Culvahouse said Palin's review, like others, began with a team of two dozen people culling information from public sources. The team reviewed speeches, financial records, tax information, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces, for a number of potential running mates.

For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state's largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn't request paper archives for Palin's hometown newspaper for fear the secret review would become public.

Among the findings: Palin had once received a citation for fishing without a license.

Reports on each candidate _ 40-some pages and single spaced _ then were reviewed by McCain, Schmidt, campaign manager Rick Davis, and top advisers Mark Salter and Charlie Black.

Palin then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 "very intrusive" questions, Culvahouse said. She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns. The campaign also checked her credit.

Culvahouse then conducted a nearly three-hour interview. He said the first thing Palin volunteered was that her daughter was pregnant, and she also quickly disclosed her husband's two-decade-old DUI arrest.

The public search also unearthed details of the Legislature's investigation into the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner, allegedly because he would not fire Palin's former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

Culvahouse said he asked follow-up questions, and "spent a lot of time with her lawyer" on the matter.

"We came out of it knowing all that we could know at the time," he said.

Throughout the process, the campaign said, Davis had multiple conversations with Palin.

Bullshit Palin told McCain her daughter was pregnant prior to the campaign announcing her as a running mate. They only met once and how did that conversation go?

McCain: As a vetting matter of course I have to ask this question: Are any of your kids knocked up?
Palin: Why yes my daughter is 4 months along?
McCain: Congratulations grandma, that is SOMETHING we can relate on, you're hired.

Poor John. He wanted the Clintons but another knee-jerk reaction has turned what's probably a very nice family -- and capable politician -- into something more like the Clampetts.

The Democrats could use this guy to swiftboat McCain, but they aren't doing that. And yet the Republicans keep showing that fillthy commercial that connects an 8-year-old Obama to the nefarious activities of the Weather Underground. Why? Because many voters here are stupid and lazy adn will believe anything. The Democrats have some semblance of honor and try to refrain from sliming, but it seems to me (especially after the lying swifties) that it is time to hit McCain hard with the same kind of crap that was used against John Kerry. Afterall, Bush swiftboated McCain first with the claims that he had been brainwashed into becoming some kind of Manchurian candidate (as well as sliming McCain's young daughter in order to votes from the racists of SC), and Bush WON that particular contest, didn't he.

When I first heard of this selection, I said I believed it was a "very, very, late, desperate selection". Seems I was right. Palin was offered the position, I'm sure, after the McCain campaign heard Barack blow the bleachers at Invesco field Thursday night. Even Chuck Todd & Andrea Mitchell said the McCain campaign was "speechless" after Barack spoke. They knew they needed a "stunner". They got this person, maybe knowing about the pregnancy, BUT, they were so desperate, they went with her anyway. They needed a "fresh-face", like Barack, a "celebrity" attention grabber, like Barack, they needed to bite into that history making "theme" Barack has of being the first African-American to receive the nomination for president from a major political party, so they got their "theme" -- a woman vice-president. They're hopeing women will jump on board because Palin has a set of "patooties" & is a "self-described" soccer mom. I hope women look past that & look at what she stands for, which is just the opposite of Hillary Clinton. In fact, she's quoted saying Hillary should "stop whining" when Hillary complained about the media during the primaries. Now, she's up on the podium, next to McCain, touting Hillary's name. Boy, oh boy, those Rethugs never cease to amaze me!

This lack of judgement in proper vetting is a startling revelation of his poor judgement. He is a hip-shooter with ADHD. Do you want him with his finger over the button?

Do you want either of them with their fingers on the button - check out why she flew from Texas to Alaska, after her water broke in Texas, at the risk of her baby's life, so she could have a baby in Alaska. Is this sound reasoning? She's making Levi (Bristol's soon to be mate) sound absolutely presidential.

Folks calm down. You have uncovered virtually NOTHING about Palin that will stick.
Obama and William Ayres, now, that will eventually get investigated fully, and we already know enough to question Obama's judgment. And then there is Rev. Wright. And then Rezko. If the media ever pays 10% of the attention to this as they do Governor Palin's daughter, then you can ask about the vetting process (by millions of democratic party voters !! for the Presidential, not vice presidential candidate...).

Spin, spin, spin. Thats all right wingers know how to do. If this were Obama's daughter do you think for one second right wingers would be saying back off? She would get the Rev. Wright 24/7 coverage treatment. HYPOCRACY OF THE HIGHEST SORT. So now all the right can do regarding this judgement embarassment ( I really dont think McCain knew and if he did, he doesn't deserve to be president) is blame the media, blame the butcher, the baker, the candle stick maker. RIGHT WING DESPERATION..... IT AIN'T PRETTY

William Ayres happened to serve on the same as Obama... not a VP pick put a heartbeat away from presidency.

Rev. Wright, an influencial pastor in Obama's community whose congregation is vital to Obama's service to his community... not a VP pick put a heartbeat away from presidency.

Tony Rezko who ingratiated himself with all top Chicago polititians(Dems and Repubs) is serving time for his choice of career... not a VP pick put a heartbeat away from presidency.

What good judgement does a presidential candidate have, picking an unvetted person to be a heartbeat away from being the leader of the most influencial country in the world? Especially one with so much baggage coming to light everyday of less than a week of her announcement?

Hannity has been hammering away at Bill Ayers for MONTHS now.....and it hasn't "stuck" - - Obama just keeps calmly moving through this process like a fish swimming through water.

But this Sarah Palin business is just beginning. And it's happening at a time when average voters are paying more attention. Plus, the fact that she has a few mini-soap operas swirling in her lfe only adds to the number of average people who will perk up their ears when news about this woman comes on CNN.

So...you keep telling yourself whatever it is you need to tell yourself to get through the day. And we'll keep doing McCain's job for him and comb through this lady's back story.

I think, so far, my favourite bit of her history is the slogan used by the Alaskan secessionist group she belonged to. "ALASKA FIRST, ALASKA ALWAYS" It's a cute little contrast to McCain's "Country First" motto, don't you think?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:12 AM on 09/02/2008

You conservatives have been hyping this Ayers thing for months and still have yet to come up with anything other than they served on a community committee together. A committee where they were selected by a third party separately and have no personal connection outside that committee. GET OVER IT! The fact is you have been trying to make something stick to Obama, even if it meant making stuff up (ie. "He's a muslim") and now you're mad because the truth about Palin makes her less than perfect?

I don't really care if Palin's daughter is pregnant, but what I really care about is her judgement in allowing her family to go through all the public exposure this issue created. She could have said "no" to the VP role and spared her family the circus. She either put her own political career ahead of her family (family values??) or is so stupid to think that the pregnancy would not have caused such a furor. Either way, that shows what a very poor VP she would be.

I may be wrong, but take a close look at the picture of Ms. Palin sitting on the couch.
Does that not look like a bear skin drapped over the couch? That gave me the chills.
We already know that she likes to hunt and approves of arial hunting of innocent wildlife.
Do we really need someone who will be a role model for children teaching them that it's
ok to kill animals for sport? I wish people would bring this part of her character to light.

I agree with you. My thoughts exactly. What woman would put their family through this. Someone that is after her own agenda and puts her children last. Who would parade her daughter 5 months pregnant in front of the whole country to see. What kind of mother would do that? Not at least to have to hold that baby in front of her and carry that 6 month old to cover her belly. I am appalled with her. She needs to rethink this opportunity.

You know, I don't know what's worse, if they rushed it or if they supposedly did a thorough job. The whole thing is pathetic.

We might as well have some fun.

If you haven't seen this photo of Palin in a red, white, and blue bikini proudly carrying a rifle, it's worth a look.

Good point.

Rushing it means that they are not thorough and impatience
The alternative is that they STILL are not thorough and incompetent.

Take your pick, GOP.

first, it's a ridiculous statement.
secondly, she's under investigation.
thirdly, the mccain camp has once again shown their gross incompetence in the vetting of vp candidates
fourth... she's scary. any woman who votes for that ticket will be voting blind... just like the christianist one issue voters who bury their own lives and livelihoods voting for lying criminals who are against abortion - the only issue that matters in their tiny little brainwashed heads.

Do you want to count running the largest and most successful campaign in history executive experience? 2,504 employees, tens of thousands of volunteers, over 2 million donors and almost $400 million in receipts.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to put together an organization of 2,500 people and have it actually run smoothly?

I think you can count on that... some important, other not so much.

The important thing here is to focus on what matters...not competent to lead.
