Palin On Pledge Of Allegiance: "If It Was Good Enough For The Founding Fathers, It's Good Enough For Me"

In a 2006 questionnaire for Alaska's gubernatorial race, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin seemed to muddle her American history.

Question: Are you offended by the phrase "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

Palin: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I'll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

The pledge, of course, was not written until 1892 and the words "under God" were not added until the 1950s. From Wikipedia:

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931), a Baptist minister, a Christian Socialist, and the cousin of Socialist Utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850-1898). Bellamy's original "Pledge of Allegiance" was published in the September 8th issue of the popular children's magazine The Youth's Companion as part of the National Public-School Celebration of Columbus Day, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America, conceived by James B. Upham.

...

The Knights of Columbus in New York City felt that the pledge was incomplete without any reference to a deity. Appealing to the authority of Abraham Lincoln, the Knights felt that the words "under God" which were from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address were most appropriate to add to the Pledge. In New York City on April 22, 1951, the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus adopted a resolution to amend their recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at the opening of each of the meetings of the 800 Fourth Degree Assemblies of the Knights of Columbus by addition of the words "under God" after the words "one nation."

...

Senator Homer Ferguson, in his report to the Congress on March 10, 1954, said, "The introduction of this joint resolution was suggested to me by a sermon given recently by the Rev. George M. Docherty, of Washington, D.C., who is pastor of the church at which Lincoln worshipped." This time Congress concurred with the Oakman-Ferguson resolution, and Eisenhower opted to sign the bill into law on Flag Day (June 14, 1954).

This is kind of like shooting fish in a barrel, except that the fish are jumping out of the barrel, grabbing the rifle, and shooting themselves.

Maybe someone could take the "under god part" out? It seems to have caused a huge problem.

Sarah Palin has make the difficult decision to return to Alaska to see her daughter through a very difficult time.

John McCain is very saddened to see her go but understands her deep commitment to her family.
While he will miss his 'soul mate' he will persevere.

Now that McCain is getting a do-over he has asked Senator Joe Leiberman to join him in
his run, (slow crawl ) to the Whitehouse.

Very good tea leaf reading. My first reaction was skepticism when it came to Joe, but who else would stand in for the bride?

In any case, Sarah Palin's 15 minutes are just about up.

McSame will ride this one to the end I'll bet just like the character in Dr Strangelove rides the bomb. He's too stubborn to admit a mistake (#1 requirement to be a Repub).

I think Palin's answer has to do a lot with her background. Here is another female with Palin's background who shows remarkable similarities.

Gov. Palin would not know this unless it was in the bible.

Where did Todd Palin go to college?

These freaks don't believe that a woman is qualified to be in charge. So who is really the Republican VP candidate? .......TODD

Here's another thing that was good enough for the Founding Fathers: legally preventing Sarah Palin, or any other woman, from voting or owning property. Oh, and allowing their husbands to own human slaves. Those things good enough for her too? They should be even better, since they really WERE good enough for the FF's.

If she thinks what the Founding Fathers thought is good enough for her, then she should read . . . and learn:

Has anyone considered running a series of advertisements that simply show McCain and Palin contradicting themselves, putting their foots in their mouths, and/or generally wallowing in their own ignorance (what with McCain's recent concerns about Czechoslovakia, or Palin's comment above)?

I mean, we couldn't write better material than these two are both freely providing...

The same could be done for Obama and Biden. Almost everyone slips up; the only perfect person is writing this comment. Nobody is going to vote for or against a candidate based on such puny details. Isn't the human-gaffe-machine in the White House enough evidence for you?

Some of the bloggers and commenters here confuse the blogosphere for reality. You think what plays well on HuffPo will goover equally well in the mainstream. This is why you're constantly surprised and disappointed (if not outraged) when the Republicans win.

I believe you under estimate the power of the internet this election cycle. This daughter-pregnancy thing has legs and it was started by Alaskan bloggers before being picked up by more national sites and eventually the MSM. I just read at at Daily Kos that ABC has confirmed that Palin belonged to the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) which I first read on DailyKos this morning. Tell us where do you go for reality?.

They nearly found an issue she could wrap her mind around. I am a newcomer to blogging, but - hey - if the Internet was good enough for our Founding Fathers, it's good enough for me.

The pledge was written in 1892. ALL of the founding fathers were long dead.

Does the word DUH mean anything to you Sarah?

You know that is just a d**n strange response. I would not expect even a governor to know everything about american history. That said I would expect in todays arena for one to know the history of the pledge of allegiance. Bat
