Palin

Determined, at least for the moment, to avoid even a hint of replicating the forced withdrawal in 1972 of Vice Presidential nominee Thomas Eagleton, Republicans here are uniformly claiming that absolutely no one - except the press - has discussed, mentioned or even hinted at the possibility that John McCain may have to bump Sarah Palin off the ticket.

"Hell no! No hint of that! None! Nada," declared Republican Pollster Whit Ayres. "All of the talk is exactly the other way," he said, claiming to be stunned by a reporter's inquiry. Palin, he said, "has energized this convention. These people [delegates] are fired up about her. Now they are going to work their hearts out for her."

On the record and off the record, Republican strategists are putting up a nearly united front in a drive to quash public speculation that the growing controversies surrounding the Palin pick, and the growing body of evidence that only a superficial background check of the Alaska Governor was conducted, are forcing the McCain campaign to rethink its choice.

Among the many news stories that have followed the selection of Palin are: There is a special investigation underway into Palin's decision to fire the state Public Safety Commissioner; her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant; her husband has been active in an Alaska secession movement and she has attended meetings of the secessionist organization; Palin helped run a '527' third party political group of the kind McCain has adamantly criticized in the past; and she has come under fire for spending little time with her newborn Downs Syndrome child.

The Republican 'Omerta' strategy is, as one lonely GOP source noted to the Huffington Post, not credible. "Of course people talk about it [pulling Palin off the ticket] over a drink or at breakfast. Everyone agrees that it's not in the cards now, but it's crazy to tell you animals [reporters] that there is a total vacuum of thought."

That note of realism does not, however, prevent the cadre of strategists and operatives here from toeing the line. "There has not been any talk that I've heard," one well-connected player here contended. "Everyone is locking in on her." This source did not declare that a change in the number two spot is forever off the table, however. "He [McCain] is not going to do it unless something that is completely off the radar now comes up."

The McCain campaign and the RNC have issued Palin talking points to delegates who face constant questioning from local and national press about the qualifications of McCain's choice and the floodtide of disclosures about her past and her family. Marc Ambinder posted a campaign email marked, "INTERNAL DOCUMENT - NOT TO BE EMAILED BEYOND CURRENT DISTRIBUTION LIST." It told loyal party members what to say when questioned about Palin's family issues:

"Please see the following points on Gov. Palin's family.

" * Governor Palin and her husband Todd have a loving family and their children mean everything to them. When their oldest daughter Bristol came to them with news that she was expecting a child they embraced her and gave her nothing but unconditional love and support.

Story continues below
advertisement

"* This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children's privacy.

"* The media should respect Bristol's privacy. That's always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.

"* (If pressed) The children of candidates do not choose to run for office and be thrust into the spotlight."

Thomas Eagleton was announced on July 14, 1972, as George McGovern's Vice Presidential pick, but news stories soon disclosed that he had received psychiatric care for depression, including electroshock therapy. Just over two weeks later, on August 1, Eagleton withdrew at McGovern's request and was replaced by Ted Kennedy-in-law Sargent Shriver.

As of Tuesday night, Intrade, the political futures market, was offering gamblers convinced that Palin will withdraw 8.3-to-1 odds: that anyone betting $12 dollars that Palin would be off the ticket before November 4 would get $100 back if they were proved right.

Even if Barak Obama is not qualified to hold the office of the President of the United States let the people decide in November it's not reason eniough for John McCain to decide that a similiar unqualified person should be good enough to hold the most powerful office in the entire world if he should die while serving (God forbid it) as president.

I read a posting somewhere that Rove was backing Mitt Romney.
It could have been a lie. If Rove in fact backed Sarah Palin, what could be closer to being the Kiss of Death.

How hypocritical. You would have torn McCain and Lieberman apart if McCain had chosen him. You would have said two old out of touch white guys. How original. His pick of Palin show real change not the safe Biden pick of Obama.

We'll start hearing about how much p*lin & Alaska has to offer with oil & natural gas. McSame has a hard head & he's always right or he has a temper tantrum. So she's probably not going anywhere. As usual the media's going after any sex or religious scandel they can dig up. Taking the focus off the issues. How can P*lin relate to the many diverse issues facing this country when she's spent her entire life in a state that conciders itself another country & has no clue about the lower 48.

It is so pathetic that McCain --the "independent reformer" can't even get the VP he wants on the ticket. Or even the his second choice. He's already taking orders from a cabal of Washington insiders and political operative. So much for his independence!

McCain has caved in to the Far Right. He need to appease them so they would come out and vote. The only way to do that was to get someone on the ticket that was "Far Right". Palin is as far right as you can get" She is against abortion for any reason except to if the Mother's life is endanger. (I am not even sure she will even stick to that) Against stem cell research. Want's to teach Creationism in schools. Against any form a birth control. The list goes on an on. This country was based on freedom of religion. But, that will soon change if McCain and Palin get into office. The only thing that might hold them back is if Congress is held by the Democratics. With McCain's age I am really worried that we will be dealing with a President that only will listen to the religious right. I don 't know about the rest of America, but I don't want someone shoving their beliefs down my throat!!

I am again disappointed at how the "media" completely disregards the Constitution and the American process of electing a president. They whine about our right to free speech is being infringed but they can not accept that the people are the ones to vote and chose the president and vice-president. All the media wants is dirt, dirt, dirt! Doesn't matter what color it is or if it is old or young, just give them dirt. Obama uses the American Dream success story to write his ticket. When it comes to his opponents, the story is about the American Pitfalls! Let the public vote on Palin. I for one think Bidin is as insincere as they come. Now he practically drools on Obama whenever he is close to him. A "catholic" hypocrite, flip-flopper on his loyalties. Give me Hillary any day!

By the way, remind me why Obama did not welcome Hillary to be Vice President? None of this would be happening if he had, period. Obama is for women as long as they don't get too close to his lunch.

Had your candidate been chosen for VP, we'd still be subjected to the trumped-up drama that follows her wherever she and her husband go. Just as the entire dem primary was about them rather than the nominee, the entire election would have been about them rather than the person actually running for president. Get over it.

Why should the media respect Bristol's privacy when her own mother doesn't? That poor child is under the close scrutiny of the media because her own mother put her there by telling the world that she was pregnant to knock down rumors of Bristol being the mother of the 5-month-old child. In other words, her political ambition tops the needs of her family.

Knowing that Bristol was pregnant, she should not have accepted the VP slot. Her daughter needs her privacy and her mother will not give it to her. Very sad.

As a mother, given the choice, I would put my children first.

Palin showed incredible poor judgment on two fronts: accepting the invitation with her lack of experience and accepting the invitation knowing that her daughter's pregnancy would be revealed.

Hear, hear. That's what I've been ranting about since I learned of her daughter's pregnancy. How could any mother drag her pregnant 17 year daughter through the mud of international press coverage? Any fool could see it coming. What kind of a mother IS Sarah Palin?

HERE'S THE REALLY SAD PART- After the election, around the first of the year, Bristol Palin will be a new mother... In Alaska. Her own mother having shoved her into the spotlight and dragged from small-town Wasilla, to Juneau in the Governor's mansion, to global media circus act within the last two years, all for her own political ambitions.

What then?

She'll be a reality TV personality, minus the ambition of fame. Her image and situation splashed all over the newspapers, cable news pundit discussions and conversations across the world, then stuck right back where she came from. Fuel for the political season, burned up quickly and exhausted out the other side.

Shame on Governor Palin. She could have passed this time at the age of 44, dedicated herself to supporting her family and put her career second. She could have, and she SHOULD have.

Am I wrong here?

This is an excellent point that has been bothering me and dominating my conversations with other folks stunned by this VP selection. Gov. Palin is reputed to be an evangelical family issues advocate, a devoted mother of five, and a self-procalimed typical 'hockey mom." Supposedly, she informed McCain of her 17-year-old daughter's five-month-old, out-of-wedlock pregnancy during the pre-announcement interview. Why would a devoted mother deliberately put her political ambitions ahead of her daughter? Both she and McCain had to know that the pregnancy issue would hit the media big time and that her situation would be a matter of discussion throughout the nation and beyond. It's one thing to have to deal with friends and relatives when something like this happens in a "perfect family." It's quite another for Palin to deliberatey, knowingly put her daughter through that on a national scale just so she can further her own political ambitions. When this young lady matures a bit and looks back on this time, how's she going to see this selfish act by her mother at her expense? Where are these self-righteous right-wing evangelicals on this issue? Thery're in a defense mode for Mom. What hypocrisy!!!!

You're exactly right. I can't imagine a more perfect example of how to force a teenager to rebel and make poor decisions that will affect her for the rest of her life. It reminds me of the stereotypical preacher's daughter-turned porn star.

This also - like many other issues proven to be favorites of the right - brings to light a glaring example of the ineffective stubbornness of right-wing ideologies. Teen pregnancy is an epidemic in this country. We have the highest rate of it in the world and also the most narrow-minded ways of trying to curb it. Abstinence education DOES NOT WORK. To put a mother embracing these outdated tactics of parenting in a position of power would be doing a disservice to us all. It would be like someone proclaiming they could end alcoholism by closing all of the liquor stores. It's simply not reasonable and the result of sticking your head in the sand and denying the facts is exactly what we're seeing here - more unplanned pregnancies, not to mention STD's, some of which can lead to ovarian and uteran problems and even cancer.

It's time for a change from the top down AND the bottom up.

Can't you people leave the family out of this?
Even President Bush was arrested for the same, and look what he's done for us in the Global War on Terror.

"The spouse of candidates do not choose to run for office and be thrust into the spotlight."

Todd has been "forthcoming about the situation and indicated it was a lesson learned he was younger."

I keep telling you people! Sarah was never pregnant and never had a baby! The baby is her daughters. People are so dumb. They get told one story and run with it. Connect the dots people. Check out this story:
She callas her OB/GYN @ 4:00am and tells her that her water has broke. The OB tells her its ok to continue with her meeting and then gets on plane after meeting. Of course not.

The truth is; she gets a call from Bristol early in the morning that her (Bristol) water has broke. Sarah tells Bristol's doctor to procede to deliver the baby. She gets on a plane and arrives many hrs later in the day. She claims the baby from Bristol. After 3 days at home with new mother Bristol, she is confident Bristol has learned to breast feed baby and she comfortably leaves baby and mother at home on day 3 and heads back to work as usual.
That my friends is the story she will maintain, or else she will go to prison for forging Federal document "Birth Certificate". That's all there is to it.

What is so private about the couple being at the RNC?

Mrs. Palin is of the opinion that humans are not playing a role in global warming. A 17 sq. mile chunk of Artic shelf just broke off.

http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN0246073320080903

Mrs Palin wants to teach "Creationism" in science class.
She is not a reformer in that she has organized as director a soft money 527 for indicted senator Ted Stevens. She is not a reformer as she has solicited millions of taxpayer dollars in earmarks from Congress.

Tom Friedman's editorial today is quite good as is the Op Ed in the NY times about McCain's big choice.
