Palin

Determined, at least for the moment, to avoid even a hint of replicating the forced withdrawal in 1972 of Vice Presidential nominee Thomas Eagleton, Republicans here are uniformly claiming that absolutely no one - except the press - has discussed, mentioned or even hinted at the possibility that John McCain may have to bump Sarah Palin off the ticket.

"Hell no! No hint of that! None! Nada," declared Republican Pollster Whit Ayres. "All of the talk is exactly the other way," he said, claiming to be stunned by a reporter's inquiry. Palin, he said, "has energized this convention. These people [delegates] are fired up about her. Now they are going to work their hearts out for her."

On the record and off the record, Republican strategists are putting up a nearly united front in a drive to quash public speculation that the growing controversies surrounding the Palin pick, and the growing body of evidence that only a superficial background check of the Alaska Governor was conducted, are forcing the McCain campaign to rethink its choice.

Among the many news stories that have followed the selection of Palin are: There is a special investigation underway into Palin's decision to fire the state Public Safety Commissioner; her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant; her husband has been active in an Alaska secession movement and she has attended meetings of the secessionist organization; Palin helped run a '527' third party political group of the kind McCain has adamantly criticized in the past; and she has come under fire for spending little time with her newborn Downs Syndrome child.

The Republican 'Omerta' strategy is, as one lonely GOP source noted to the Huffington Post, not credible. "Of course people talk about it [pulling Palin off the ticket] over a drink or at breakfast. Everyone agrees that it's not in the cards now, but it's crazy to tell you animals [reporters] that there is a total vacuum of thought."

That note of realism does not, however, prevent the cadre of strategists and operatives here from toeing the line. "There has not been any talk that I've heard," one well-connected player here contended. "Everyone is locking in on her." This source did not declare that a change in the number two spot is forever off the table, however. "He [McCain] is not going to do it unless something that is completely off the radar now comes up."

The McCain campaign and the RNC have issued Palin talking points to delegates who face constant questioning from local and national press about the qualifications of McCain's choice and the floodtide of disclosures about her past and her family. Marc Ambinder posted a campaign email marked, "INTERNAL DOCUMENT - NOT TO BE EMAILED BEYOND CURRENT DISTRIBUTION LIST." It told loyal party members what to say when questioned about Palin's family issues:

"Please see the following points on Gov. Palin's family.

" * Governor Palin and her husband Todd have a loving family and their children mean everything to them. When their oldest daughter Bristol came to them with news that she was expecting a child they embraced her and gave her nothing but unconditional love and support.

Story continues below

"* This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children's privacy.

"* The media should respect Bristol's privacy. That's always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.

"* (If pressed) The children of candidates do not choose to run for office and be thrust into the spotlight."

Thomas Eagleton was announced on July 14, 1972, as George McGovern's Vice Presidential pick, but news stories soon disclosed that he had received psychiatric care for depression, including electroshock therapy. Just over two weeks later, on August 1, Eagleton withdrew at McGovern's request and was replaced by Ted Kennedy-in-law Sargent Shriver.

As of Tuesday night, Intrade, the political futures market, was offering gamblers convinced that Palin will withdraw 8.3-to-1 odds: that anyone betting $12 dollars that Palin would be off the ticket before November 4 would get $100 back if they were proved right.

The repubs demanded to see Obama's birth certificate. Why not have them produce the birth record of the last Palin baby. I'll bet that Bristol had that baby and got pregnant again. Jerry Springer would pay a king's ransom to air this family history. One thing for sure, abstinence is surely not being taught in the Palin household with any success. Does she even care about her children's education? If the Beverly Hillbillies were popular, this family would win an academy award. All you have to do is have McCain's abandoned family as there next door neighbors.

If Bristol had the first baby, it is biologically impossible for her to be pregnant again.

The bigger question is: Is Bristol actually pregnant now? Or is it a lie to coverup the first lie?

What are you talking about?? biological impossible for her to be pregnant again? are you kidding me chill? I'm a woman that has 4 kids, all grown up already, I got pregnant with the third one, when my second one was 2 months old, I could not believe it, but there she was, these two have birthdays days from each other, it happens all the time if you don't take the proper measures.

Plus we don't even know if she is truly 5 months or that was the number they had to give to make it seem impossible that Trig is Bristols. The most telling information are the pics of SP at 7 and 8 months NOT looking pregnant and her staff not even suspecting and they see and work with her everyday! And how convenient her daughter was pulled out of school and tucked away in their Wasilla home. I don't care how many children you have given birth to, when you are pregnant and you get a contraction, cramp or some liquid leaking your istinct is to get to the doctor or some kind of medical help ASAP! NOT after a 7 or 8 hour flight! Remarkable that people actually believe her story.

"Say Goodnight, Gracie." Sarah Palin is a distraction to the McCain campaign. I don't see how they can generate broadbased support if each day's news is dominated by another example of Palin's strange views on social and political issues. She's on the ticket because it's the only way McCain can raise money.

After seeing how wet he got the republican fundamentalist base by picking Palin, McCain is not going to dump her. They will continue to sell her as some sort of "reformer" and "maverick," but, like his bomber jet over North Vietnam, the Senator's campaign is going down in flames.

If Palin would stop invading the privacy of other families, maybe we wouldn't feel the need to invade hers. Calling for our government to ban abortion even in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the life of the mother is hardly respectful of family privacy. She and her supporters have held up her family as a living illustration of the social policies she promotes as an elected public official. Now they want us to shut up, cover our eyes, and applaud, instead of examining what they've displayed as a shining example of their virtue.

Very well said....perhaps you could replace McCain on the Larry King show. More people need to know that McCain is NOT PRO CHOICE.....and his VP choice is even worse.

When did the Republicans start thinking that candidate's children deserve privacy? Was it before or after McCain "joked" that "the reason Chelsea Clinton is so ugly is because Janet Reno is her father."

And, was that before or after they decided sexism is wrong.

Sarah Palin is not going away so get used to it.

You want to bring up her scandals? Let's open the door to Obama's scandals.
In fact I'd love to see a video comparison of the last 20 years of Palin and Obama's life.
Let America judge for themselves.

O'bama doesn't have any scandals. He was scrutinized more than just about any politician I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of them.

On the other hand, no one knows anything about Palin, including McCain.

Obama spent 20 years of his life being a member of a church where Reverend Wright preached a "Hate America" theme, and yet, somehow, NEVER heard one of those sermons? He's friends with a known American terrorist, William Ayers, who wrote an op-ed piece in Sept. 11, 2001 NYT about not going far enough when he bombed the Capitol building and the Pentagon. No scandal?

Remember "John McCain does not speak for this campaign?"

Clearly, he doesn't make decisions for the campaign either.

The logic behind this RNC convention - "We LOVE the Republicans, but we need to reform them" - is contradictory and Americans will see that.

Folks on the right are more excited about Palin than they are McCain. That's very telling. Unfortunately for them, once Palin debates Biden, the balloon is going to pop and the McCain campaign will be exposed for the joke that they are.

“Governor Palin and her husband Todd have a loving family and their children mean everything to them. When their oldest daughter Bristol came to them with news that she was expecting a child they embraced her and gave her nothing but unconditional love and support.”

However according to this story:
"Mark Okeson, the assistant principal at Wasilla High School, told the Chicago Tribune that Bristol started her junior year last fall, in the town where Sarah Palin grew up.

He said Bristol inexplicably transferred to an Anchorage high school midyear, leaving Levi behind.

"I never heard the story why," he said."
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/republican_race/2008/09/01/2008-09-01_bristol_palins_pregnancy_was_an_open_sec.html

If they gave her nothing but unconditional love and support why did they send her away to Anchorage to attend school?

Who was she living with in Anchorage?

I will be almost as shocked as I was when Palin was chosen as VP if she steps down after the convention. Unless there is something more on her than we already know. Keep in mind these are republicans and they never admit to making mistakes. The things she is being ctiticized for, abuse of power investigation, unwed teen daughter pregnancy et al. are being turned into positives. To republicans it shows she is tough and stands up for what she believes blah, blah, blah. This is how it works with this party. On the lack of experience? Republican Answer: She has more executive experience than Obama. You watch. They are going to continue hammering Obama on the lack of experience issue, without any sense of shame, even though Palin, who is a 72 year old heart beat away from becoming POTUS, is the least experienced and qualified choice in history and could be a disaster for this country.

How can I put this -- you guys are idiots.

The best you can get on Palin is that she fired someone? SHE WAS THE GOVERNOR -- she can fire anyone she wants. Move on. All executives do it. But the Dem ticket doesn't know anything about executives -- cause you don't have any on your ticket -- nor have you since '00.

Do you really think that a 16 old kid, can give birth in April -- and yet in August is somehow 5 months pregnant? Odd how that month thing goes. But last time I counted -- 5 months from April puts her somewhere in mid-late September. And unless you haven't heard before -- but recent mothers are infertile for a few months after the birth.

Just plain stupid. But I like to see you running scared. Run little lemmings -- run.

She cannot fire someone for refusing to fire someone else. Ethics violation. Her patriotism is also in question since she has been associated with a secessionist group whose motto is Alaska First - Alaska Always. How patriotic are you when you no longer want to be a part of the US?

Coming out with her daughter being pregnant, and we only have Palin's word for that, someone that is a proven liar, was to rebut the rumors that her youngest child was actually her daughters.

She is as corrupt as just about every other Republican in this country. We don't need anymore corrupt criminals in the White House like we have had for the past eight years.

What I am afraid of is that somehow the Republicans will steal this election like they stole the last two and that would pretty much be the destruction of this country. Four more years of this current regime, or worse, would make our country so weak Mexico would be able to successfully invade and occupy us.

That is not a future I want for my grandchildren.

Um, yeah...

Paid any attention to the mountain of pork Ms. Palin piled up for her town of Wasilla, and later for Alaska? Feel like she was honest with you "geniuses" during her introduction speech coming out as a staunch opponent of federal earmarks?

How about Ms. Palin's tough talk against the bridge to nowhere, except, well, she wasnt' really all that against it until the public demanded accountability for those not against it. Then she was. Do all the brilliant Republicans feel smart buying into that one?

Maybe the rocket science crowd was busy doing other things when Ms. Palin claimed she is tough against the politics and "old boy network" of Washington, but failed to mention her ties to Ted Stevens, sharing a lobbyist and a PAC, not to mention federally funded rail projects connecting their towns (perhaps the railway to nowhere).

No, to most of us, "dumb" is allowing yourself to blindly be taken in by someone you DON'T know, had never heard of, and turn the keys to your country over to them, all in the name of blind party loyalty. Now THAT is dumb. And America needs change from that in the worst way.
