Palin

Determined, at least for the moment, to avoid even a hint of replicating the forced withdrawal in 1972 of Vice Presidential nominee Thomas Eagleton, Republicans here are uniformly claiming that absolutely no one - except the press - has discussed, mentioned or even hinted at the possibility that John McCain may have to bump Sarah Palin off the ticket.

"Hell no! No hint of that! None! Nada," declared Republican Pollster Whit Ayres. "All of the talk is exactly the other way," he said, claiming to be stunned by a reporter's inquiry. Palin, he said, "has energized this convention. These people [delegates] are fired up about her. Now they are going to work their hearts out for her."

On the record and off the record, Republican strategists are putting up a nearly united front in a drive to quash public speculation that the growing controversies surrounding the Palin pick, and the growing body of evidence that only a superficial background check of the Alaska Governor was conducted, are forcing the McCain campaign to rethink its choice.

Among the many news stories that have followed the selection of Palin are: There is a special investigation underway into Palin's decision to fire the state Public Safety Commissioner; her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant; her husband has been active in an Alaska secession movement and she has attended meetings of the secessionist organization; Palin helped run a '527' third party political group of the kind McCain has adamantly criticized in the past; and she has come under fire for spending little time with her newborn Downs Syndrome child.

The Republican 'Omerta' strategy is, as one lonely GOP source noted to the Huffington Post, not credible. "Of course people talk about it [pulling Palin off the ticket] over a drink or at breakfast. Everyone agrees that it's not in the cards now, but it's crazy to tell you animals [reporters] that there is a total vacuum of thought."

That note of realism does not, however, prevent the cadre of strategists and operatives here from toeing the line. "There has not been any talk that I've heard," one well-connected player here contended. "Everyone is locking in on her." This source did not declare that a change in the number two spot is forever off the table, however. "He [McCain] is not going to do it unless something that is completely off the radar now comes up."

The McCain campaign and the RNC have issued Palin talking points to delegates who face constant questioning from local and national press about the qualifications of McCain's choice and the floodtide of disclosures about her past and her family. Marc Ambinder posted a campaign email marked, "INTERNAL DOCUMENT - NOT TO BE EMAILED BEYOND CURRENT DISTRIBUTION LIST." It told loyal party members what to say when questioned about Palin's family issues:

"Please see the following points on Gov. Palin's family.

" * Governor Palin and her husband Todd have a loving family and their children mean everything to them. When their oldest daughter Bristol came to them with news that she was expecting a child they embraced her and gave her nothing but unconditional love and support.

Story continues below
advertisement

"* This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children's privacy.

"* The media should respect Bristol's privacy. That's always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.

"* (If pressed) The children of candidates do not choose to run for office and be thrust into the spotlight."

Thomas Eagleton was announced on July 14, 1972, as George McGovern's Vice Presidential pick, but news stories soon disclosed that he had received psychiatric care for depression, including electroshock therapy. Just over two weeks later, on August 1, Eagleton withdrew at McGovern's request and was replaced by Ted Kennedy-in-law Sargent Shriver.

As of Tuesday night, Intrade, the political futures market, was offering gamblers convinced that Palin will withdraw 8.3-to-1 odds: that anyone betting $12 dollars that Palin would be off the ticket before November 4 would get $100 back if they were proved right.

I liked the comment last night on CNN that Lieberman's mouth looked like Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker. How smug he looked, in love with his imaginary sagacity.

LOL, talk of Palin being removed and McC then inserting Joe as replacement and would do so either in last ditch effort befor vote and hope to hold onto base for THEIR win regarding USSC selections/etc bribe or even shortly after should they actually skinny on to a November win for even McC is not that stupid to think Palin IS actually capable ...just useful to win over the base on the KEY stalwart Abortion/Pro life issue which is near and dear to those righteous righties and what stirs them to their core beiningness and do NOT mind getting used or abused as long as a chance THEIR bone of contention is tossed to their preferrence !!!

Great comment, Rumba. He is smug, totally self-absorbed. He's at the wrong party if "Country First" is the motto of the Repugs.

Somebody's got to "vet" this woman since McCain obviously didn't. Google "Thomas Eagleton" and you'll see what's next. Dump Palin now! God wants a gas pipeline indeed.

Palin knows that she is not qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, but she accepted anyway. This is someone who put her own ambitions first and the good of the nation last. As a woman I am ashamed of her.

Bush was not qualified to be the "heartbeat of the Presidency", but look what Rove accomplished.

Now that Rove has Palin which was McCain's decision, Rove is doing the only thing that will work for the GOP and that is misdirect as much as he can.

And worse than that, she put her own ambition in front of her daughter's welfare. If anyone thinks this is good for the daughter, they are crazy.

SHE DID NOT EVEN REALLY PUT THE GOOD OF HER FAMILY FIRST let alone the NATION...Honestly..The report of the baby Trig "birth" saga, where she ignors water break (sign of possible immenient birth possiblity and with a KNOWN special needs baby subject to complications but gives speech, then borads plane for 11 hours (never informing the crew of "possible complications that her pregnancy state could involve..) Bypasses medical facilities even upon landing in home state to go to RURLA facility..IF the child had NOT "survived", would have been "natural complications" with little note that mother was wreckless in her "choices/decisons" and just listed as "tragic/sorrowful/etc topped with but 3 days BONDING with the special needs INFANT before hustling herself back to the office leaving the SPECIAL NEEDS infant to tohers care...Yeah, true professional coupled with acceptance of NATIONAL nomination that center stages her and HER family with teen daughter situation...whta parent who VLAUES their family makes such decisons, seems she and her husband threw their family and the nation under the bus !!!

{Palin, he said, "has energized this convention. These people [delegates] are fired up about her. Now they are going to work their hearts out for her."}

Yeah, cuz few people are energized about McCain.
Nice.
The VP is more exciting than the Pres contender. Using their own arguments, she is eminently more qualified for Pres than McCain is.
All hes ever done is be a state rep, that showed his penchant to be corrupt, and then a senator who continued to try to appear to be something different just to keep elected.
Check all the Arizona press coverage about him over the years and you'd be surprised at what a terrible human being he really is. So yeah, shes better than he is because shes younger, better looking and hasnt yet left her husband for a younger better looking richer man like McCain did.

Hey ya all - Palin ain't going away. . EVER! . . McCain DESPERATELY wanted Lieberman as his VP. And the RNC would have none of it. So being childish and vindictive McCain picked the worst possible candidate, and told the RNC to shove it! HE DID IT QUICK AND FAST so the RNC couldn't veto his choice. (so there was no time for vetting, and McCain doesn't care)
Thanks to McCain's anger over losing Lieberman, now the RNC has to suck up to, and give glowing praise to possilby the worst VP candidate they have ever been faced with.
McCain is making the ole boys in the RNC eat dirt and stand around with with egg on their faces
because they wouldn't let Lieberman play in the sandbox with McCain.
What a delightful show this is for us Democrats and the media.
The RNC is in a world of pain and CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT IT.

Did any catch a glimpse of Newtie in the crowd last eve...HE WAS DELIGHTED and all need remember, Newtie thought it would be BETTER if the GOP tossed the title over to the Dems and let the GOP take a time out to REGROUP with the Dems stuck with cleanup whch is going to be quite arduous and tedious and so very full of consequences and therewith easier to tag as DEM failures rather then GOP accountability on parade !!

Normally, I'd agree. But I wonder if her daughter's pregnancy is a legitimate story in light of Palin's support of abstinence-only education. Also, Palin herself has discussed it in terms of her adamant pro-life stance--and stories have reported her saying that she wouldn't support abortion rights even if her own daughter were raped (a gruesome-scenario trap a la Dukakis, but telling nonetheless). Seems there must be a way to discuss the consequences of Palin's anti-woman, anti-sex-ed, anti-choice policies without directly implicating her daughter, but Palin's policies have real-life effects, and here's an example in her own home, right under her--and our--noses.

This is not about the kids; it’s about what Ms. Palin is supposed to represent. When the Palin candidacy was announced, evangelicals were reported to be ecstatic because her political agenda passed the litmus test for social conservatives; namely, that she opposes same-sex marriage, wants to ban embryonic stem cell research, supports the teaching of creationism in our public schools, opposes sex education and use of condoms and of course is against women having the right to make individual reproductive choices. Hence, these matters are not just questions of private belief or personal values, they are an agenda for public policy, which Ms. Palin exemplifies and seeks to propagate. The disparity between what Ms. Palin advocates for public policy and what she practices in her own life is a matter of considerable public importance. While James Dobson and his Focus on the Family followers now dismiss the pregnancy issue as being “human all too human,” they make no such allowance for the rest of us when they seek to impose their “values based” political agenda on the entire country.

NORMALLY would agree as well HOWEVER her LACK of true FAMILY VALUES is on display for she accepted the nomination knowing or SHOULD have known/realized the consequences that would come regarding intense scrutiny by the media and if she did NOT realize, speaks volumes about her "experience" qualificationaries !!! Frankly find it appalling choice to accept and willingly put such as the teen daughter out there ( an unmarried teen pregnancy is a stressfull situtation beginning to end, let alone displayed on national stage and thou many can sympathize, no sympathy enough to compensate for what REALLY enduring including the gotcha snickering that DOES come with it on so many levels whether ewarranted or not or "proper" !!! There is the disdain she had when water broke on a trip to Texas to give a speech to the Oil folks, a delicate pregnancy with a KNOWN special needs baby in HER womb but wreckless in taking an 11 hour plane ride and by bpassing close medical facilities ..all while carrying a baby to was indeed subject to various dire complicatoins...perhaps a form of pushing a natural abortion of sorts..Yeah, that does cross the minds of many , had the baby NOT survived, would have been a sympathetic response induced and she then fails BONDING marks as within 3 days of birth, heads back to the office whole others tends to the infants special needs. NOT THE GREATEST OF FAMILY VALUES ON DISPLAY ,consider a /REALITY CHECK !

I will repeat this until it sinks in...this is the biggest distraction the GOP has ever tried. McCain's campaign manager came out and said that this election is not about the issues. They are being honest for once. They want to use gimmicks to keep our focus off of the real problems this country faces. DON'T FALL FOR IT PEOPLE!

You mean to say that the McCain campaign deliberately avoided vetting a Vice Presidential candidate, with the intent of making a laughing stock of their candidate, in order to raise the biggest questions yet about John McCain's judgment and reap the rewards of a non- (or negative) bounce in the polls? And that these brilliant Republican strategists deliberately picked the most inexperienced and unqualified VP candidate ever, so they could highlight Obama's supposed inexperience?

How fiendishly clever! Keep up the good work, Republicans.

I have another theory: the McCain campaign knows they're going to lose in November, so they're just not bothering to make an effort.

The issue for all voter regarding Sarah Palin is not Ms. Palin.

John McCain has failed presidential decision making 101. It is the first public decision all candidates for President must make; their choice for Vice President.

Ms. Palin is recast from the mold of Anita Bryant. Attractive, but without the compassion or knowledge required to live in a world that does not always think or believe the way she does.

Poor Rethuglicans! Their only comeback to questions of her competency to be commander-in-chief, should something happen to McCain, is to cry "sexism"! As if somehow a female candidate should not have to be measured by the same yardstick by which we measure male candidates. As if, as one Rethuglican defender said on Larry King yesterday, in response to Jame's Carville's assertion that she has no experience that qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, that such questions are "demeaning to all women everywhere." AS IF !!!

The pregnant daughter and her boyfriend should not be harped on. BUT, along with John McCain's lack of judgement, the judgement of Sarah Palin should be called into question. As a Christian woman, does she really believe that other young men and women should abstain from premarital sex, but yet it's OK for her and for her daughter? Does she feel that teaching abstention doesn't work or did she and her husband simply fail at teaching family values to their kids? Does she believe in allowing the use of contraceptives??? Because... don't kid yourselves, this pro-life movement is not only about denying access to abortions, but about denying access to contraceptives, as well, no matter what age you happen to be!!
