Palin

Determined, at least for the moment, to avoid even a hint of replicating the forced withdrawal in 1972 of Vice Presidential nominee Thomas Eagleton, Republicans here are uniformly claiming that absolutely no one - except the press - has discussed, mentioned or even hinted at the possibility that John McCain may have to bump Sarah Palin off the ticket.

"Hell no! No hint of that! None! Nada," declared Republican Pollster Whit Ayres. "All of the talk is exactly the other way," he said, claiming to be stunned by a reporter's inquiry. Palin, he said, "has energized this convention. These people [delegates] are fired up about her. Now they are going to work their hearts out for her."

On the record and off the record, Republican strategists are putting up a nearly united front in a drive to quash public speculation that the growing controversies surrounding the Palin pick, and the growing body of evidence that only a superficial background check of the Alaska Governor was conducted, are forcing the McCain campaign to rethink its choice.

Among the many news stories that have followed the selection of Palin are: There is a special investigation underway into Palin's decision to fire the state Public Safety Commissioner; her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant; her husband has been active in an Alaska secession movement and she has attended meetings of the secessionist organization; Palin helped run a '527' third party political group of the kind McCain has adamantly criticized in the past; and she has come under fire for spending little time with her newborn Downs Syndrome child.

The Republican 'Omerta' strategy is, as one lonely GOP source noted to the Huffington Post, not credible. "Of course people talk about it [pulling Palin off the ticket] over a drink or at breakfast. Everyone agrees that it's not in the cards now, but it's crazy to tell you animals [reporters] that there is a total vacuum of thought."

That note of realism does not, however, prevent the cadre of strategists and operatives here from toeing the line. "There has not been any talk that I've heard," one well-connected player here contended. "Everyone is locking in on her." This source did not declare that a change in the number two spot is forever off the table, however. "He [McCain] is not going to do it unless something that is completely off the radar now comes up."

The McCain campaign and the RNC have issued Palin talking points to delegates who face constant questioning from local and national press about the qualifications of McCain's choice and the floodtide of disclosures about her past and her family. Marc Ambinder posted a campaign email marked, "INTERNAL DOCUMENT - NOT TO BE EMAILED BEYOND CURRENT DISTRIBUTION LIST." It told loyal party members what to say when questioned about Palin's family issues:

"Please see the following points on Gov. Palin's family.

" * Governor Palin and her husband Todd have a loving family and their children mean everything to them. When their oldest daughter Bristol came to them with news that she was expecting a child they embraced her and gave her nothing but unconditional love and support.

Story continues below
advertisement

"* This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children's privacy.

"* The media should respect Bristol's privacy. That's always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.

"* (If pressed) The children of candidates do not choose to run for office and be thrust into the spotlight."

Thomas Eagleton was announced on July 14, 1972, as George McGovern's Vice Presidential pick, but news stories soon disclosed that he had received psychiatric care for depression, including electroshock therapy. Just over two weeks later, on August 1, Eagleton withdrew at McGovern's request and was replaced by Ted Kennedy-in-law Sargent Shriver.

As of Tuesday night, Intrade, the political futures market, was offering gamblers convinced that Palin will withdraw 8.3-to-1 odds: that anyone betting $12 dollars that Palin would be off the ticket before November 4 would get $100 back if they were proved right.

Palin’s Lobbyist Has Abramoff Ties http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/02/palins-future-son-in-law-heads-to-gop-convention/#comment-5135 I'm not sure how true this story is. I would be cautious about this story since the GOP likes to put out a lot of false stories out there. Let's see how this one play out and just keep our ears and eyes open.

I am curious.. why have not the MSM jumped on this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHFY1otOWjQ video about Sarah Palin being a former member of the sessionist party for Alaska.... If that had been Obama or Michelle involved in a group that wants to seperate from America, their would be poster calling the traitors for sure.

Yes, why don't we question her patriotism and the patriotism of her husband after they raked Michelle over the coals for a misquoted remark.

The media is supposed to respect the privacy of Palin's family. So to further that along, they have the baby daddy coming to the convention???? Maybe they should just stage the wedding right there at the convention too! It's beyond trashy. This explains why Rove was pushing Romney. John McCain has tragically bad judgment.

There is NO WAY that the king of all opportunists, the reprehensible Mitt Romney, turned down the VP slot. He's been drooling over Washington from the first day he was elected Governor of Massachusetts.

If we are supposed to respect Bristol Palin's privacy, why did her own mother violate it? It speaks to Sarah Palin's judgment, character, and yes, her mothering skills. Her poor daughter looks like she doesn't know what hit her!

I'm not judging her morally, I don't care about her pregnant daughter (except for the hypocrisy it has revealed about Rush and company) and I don't care about her husband's connections, I don't even care about her brother-in-law, I care that she is not FIT to step into the office of POTUS if something happens to McCain, and something definitely could!!! She is a rampant Pentecostal born again, she does not represent the majority of the U.S., even if she thinks she does, she is a phony, an opportunist and someone who has gotten by on her looks for years. It's time to stop this foolishness, McCain doesn't care about the country, he cares about being elected and nothing else. This calculated, evil decision is even more reason to defeat this hot headed liar.

Mr. Edsall

You include in your laundry list the following.

" her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant"

Could you (or a fellow huffstar) please tell me what in Gods name that has to do with anything?

Seriously, what the hell does her daughter being pregnant have to do with her ability to serve?

This is the most pathetic thing I have seen in a long time. It will backfire HARD.

Now censor away because basically I'm telling you that your post is crap.

And we can't have dissent here on Huffpo; the dear leader doesn't like that.

I'm not arguing that there is greater diversity in the DNC but the convention is hardly an indicator. It was a staged event with racial quotas.

What concerns me more than anything is that McCain would pick someone whom he interviewed once the week before and did no background check on to fill the job of president should he for any reason be unable. According to his own account, he went with his "gut" on this one. Given that McCain wrapped up the nomination in February and had months to make this selection, this is especially outrageous. How about basing decisions in a careful review of easily available facts and sound judgement rather than the kind of "gut" reactions that so characterize the current president's decision to get us into an endless war, ability to see Putin's soul, and appoint Heckuva job Brownie to head up FEMA. The last thing we need 4 more years of the same failed leadership style.

This is the MOST EXPLOSIVE I have seen in this election cycle!!!

The former Chairman of the AIP goes way beyond just mentioning Sarah Palin at the AIP convention. In this video he is actually advocating that members "INFILTRATE" mainstream political organizations as a method to achieving political power to achieve the AIP's aims.

First he refers to Sarah Palin as a former member then uses Sarah Palin and Ron Paul's career as an example to be followed. He mentions Palin as a member who moved up and Ron Paul running as a republican to get elected (rather than the Librarian Party where his true beliefs and sympathies lie.)

It definitely comes across as if Sarah Palin has a complete agenda different from the Republican Party and United States of America as the former AIP definitely sees her as an "INFILTRATOR" (you can easily subsitute:Saboteur/traitor/secret separatist)

It makes sense why she wouldn't be on any official AIP records!

Check this video out. It gets going at about 6.00
MSM needs to report more on this angle!!! Pass around for further discussion!!!

"To go along to get along she eventually joined the Rebublican party, where she had all kinds of problems"

"Anyone can check that box to be in a party and they have no controlover that. If you win-then you are in. You can use this method to infiltrate"

before this I stopped when I heard him referring to US troops in Alaska as "occupying troops"

Besides being not qualified, she is treasonous? An infiltrator?

Everything about this woman is so ridiculous- and true.

We should not judge Sarah Palin morally..

However, as voters, we are forced to judge. McCain chose not based experience, experience, or who was the "best" candidate. Ms. Palin was chosen in large part because of her gender, and her far-right positions on the issues.

It's only fair and appropriate that women (myself included) and men judge her based on her priorities, her behavior, her policies, and her ability to both "talk the talk" and "walk the walk." She, and her party, tout her family as positive, and her motherhood as a badge of honor. The badge is tarnished, given questionable choices such as: boarding a plane while in labor (proudly); returning to work three days after birth of a child with Down Syndrome; and entering a presidential race when her 17-year-old daughter inarguably needs her support.

As a mother, I find those choices reprehensible, and it is my right to say so. I'm no sexist -- I'm a realist, a pragmatist. She hasn't delivered long-term results to the public of Alaska, the results of her parenting choices are questionable, and her disingenuousness in policy statements is now known.

This is all part of candidacy in a high-stakes campaign. Americans have the right to know, and judge the character of those we elect . I'm unimpressed with Palin. And given his lack of diligence in vetting her, I'm less impressed with McCain.

Governor Palin alone is responsible for behaviors that result in her "looking bad".

I agree, let's not add anymore to it. Bashing a 17 year old girl just because you are deathly afraid of an enormously qualified VP candidate is ridiculous. The Daily Kos bloggers created this firestorm over a teenage girl, but shame on the MSM for giving it legs. This is politics and candiate's children and their families have nothing to do with it and should be off limits as Obama himself has stated; and if you think that they do have something to do with the political process then you are truly delusional. Thump on Gov. Palin all you want, she can handle it; but leave the kids out of it.

The last thing the mentality of the Democratic party cares about is her daughter being pregnant. In fact she would get more support and help being in the D crowd more than anywhere else.
BUT when you run your mouth about "values" and have a self righteousness that is borderline judgmental. It allows everyone the opportunity to call you on your own BS front and center. Face it Republicans you're "philosophy" is unrealistic and deserves a good wash.

Ethics and morals have not been too awful high on the Palin Family values. Have they values voters?
The Republicans must be advertising about the views of the Huffington post and encouraging the trolls to visit today.
The way I think about patriotism is not that we should have states abandon the United States of America.
I also believe that, if proven, the fact she wants to remove Alaska from participation in our country turns her from VP candidate to traitor to America
Now really, whom would protect Alaska and provide pork for the few people that would support this move?

It is not the fault of the hopelessly unqualified Ms Palin that McCain offered her the job over the phone without prior interview.

Any executive must have two qualifications:
1. Make sound decisions, 2. Pick the right people. McCain lacks both.

Obama proved that he can make the right decisions AND pick the right people.

Apparently, you've never been to Wasilla. I have. It's not much now, and never was much. But Palin got $27 million in earmarks for it. Good for Wasilla, bad for the rest of us.

So, contrary to McCain's stated policies, she favors sucking up all the earmarks you can get, regardless of how they waste federal taxes.

Like many on the right, she doesn't want to be held to the standards she advocates.
