Bloomberg:

Former Texas Senator Phil Gramm, who stepped aside as John McCain's campaign co-chairman in July after an uproar over comments that those worried about the U.S. economy are ``whiners,'' today revisited that sentiment.

``If you're sitting here today, you're not economically illiterate and you're not a whiner, so I'm not worried about who you're going to vote for,'' Gramm told supporters of McCain at a Financial Services Roundtable event in Minneapolis on the sidelines of the Republican National Convention.

Gramm, 66, stepped down as a senior adviser to McCain in July after telling the Washington Times that the U.S. is a ``nation of whiners'' facing a ``mental recession.''

Here is the reasoning behind such folks:

I am a mean, greedy b@st@rd.

That is what it takes to make it in the world.

Those who don't make it are just not mean or grasping enough.

Of course, they often reason that it is some other characteristic besides mean and grasping and greedy that is the key to their success.....the connections that they have connived, their personality. That is the rationalization that keeps them semi-sane.

Wow, the not "economically illiterate" statement is positively Orwellian.

I am with Phil, this is actually worse than Mall Angst, of some Low Pants Deadbeat Rapper.
The WHINING from the LEFT(out) is DEAFENING. . . . . Oh Yeah! poor "O"blivious.

You and Phil are absolutely right.

In fact, we democrats are ready and willing to pay for an advertisement on behalf of John McCain where Phil Gramm can tell all the hardworking misguided Americans that the economy is good, and that if they think they are feeling an economic pinch... relax it is just a mental recession.

Then he could say if any Americans are complaining about the economy, it is because they are economically illiterate and just a bunch of whiners

All we ask is for John McCain to say "I am John McCain and I endorse this message" at the end of the ad.

Hey everyone, now the Republican blogers are speaking in tongues. Why do they all end their posts with "Oh Yeah!! or Yeah baby!! NoBama Llama!!! ?????? Maybe too much Jack Daniels? Too much time at NASCAR races where they are required to scream in tongues? Or maybe it's the church AT the NASCAR race? Yikes, "O"blivious? Inane drivel.

So basically Phil said to the wealthy of the wealthy, the fat cats, the corporate swindlers, the elite upper crust that is the republican party.....SCREW THE AVERAGE AMERICAN. We are rich and will remain filthy rich as long as the GOP has lobbyists and coprorate backers are making policy.

I guess Philthy Phil either lost his "American Hat" or never really had one.

``If you're sitting here today, you're not economically illiterate and you're not a whiner, ..."

What he really means by "not economically illiterate" is "WEALTHY".

Very definitive of American politics in general the "us vs them" mentality. It goes both ways, statements like these is why many perceive Republicans as non-inclusive, unless you think like they do.

Perceive Republicans as non-inclusive? It's reality, and they have shown everyone what they're about. Some just don't want to believe what is happening. My wife works wit a woman that brought an E rumor list put out by Republicans full of lies as to what BO's policy's are.I found a site that addressed this letter completely and explained what the truth was.It was a non-partisan site and I couldn't help but think she won't pay any heed to it.

Did you watch Ted Kennedy last week though? What about the Clinton crime family?

Once you take off the liberal goggles and see that all of these politicians are gangsters, you will be much happier.

What a stupid comment. Tom Delay is under indictment for violation of campaign finance laws. Just because you do not like the political views of the Clintons or Kennedys does not make them criminal. Take a deep breath and you will be much happier.

So we should elect....who.

No, wait. Let's just have a lottery. Everyone over age 35 goes in the hat, and the lucky winner is Prez, the next is VP.

Then we add in everyone between 30 and 34, get 49 more hats....

Of course they aren't whiners. They comprise that 1% of America that controls one third of the wealth. You'll only hear them whine once Barack gets elected and raises the taxes on thier butts then the whining will begin and Phil Gramm will be at the head of that parade.

"When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic."

- Benjamin Franklin

Welfare, universal health care, etc. ring a bell?

A war pushed for by Lockheed Martin and friends ring a bell?
No-bid contracts granted to Halliburton ring a bell?
Record profits for big oil companies ring a bell?

Oh, but I suppose we should only be afraid of *individuals* "voting themselves money", not corporations doing so. Because when corporations do it, there's no risk of a dreaded "nanny state", just a Mussolinian Dream Machine.

How about no-bid contracts, laws that allow the rich to plunder to US Treasury, laws that allow them to side-step things like banking oversight, or laws that allow loans and credit with 30%+ interest rates??

Sorry, but the Federal government spends MUCH more money on socialized corporate welfare than on social programs. It's not even close! This nation is largely in the position it is economically because lobbyists for large corporations have been pulling the strings in WDC for almost 8 years now.
