Obama Murdoch

Vanity Fair:

Just before the New York Democratic primary, when I found myself undecided between Clinton and Obama, I said to Murdoch (a little flirtation, like a little gossip, softens him), "Rupert, I don't know who to vote for--so I'm going to give you my vote. You choose."

He paused, considered, nodded his head slowly: "Obama--he'll sell more papers."

Even though his daughter Elisabeth and her husband, high-flying P.R. man Matthew Freud, have been raising money for Obama in Notting Hill, in London, where they live, and his wife has been attending fund-raisers for Obama in Los Angeles with David Geffen, this is a leap for Murdoch. Murdoch has traditionally liked politicians to come to him. His historic shift in the 1990s to Tony Blair came after Blair made a pilgrimage to Australia.

Obama, on the other hand, was snubbing Murdoch. Every time he reached out (Murdoch executives tried to get the Kennedys to help smooth the way to an introduction), nothing. The Fox stain was on Murdoch.

It wasn't until early in the summer that Obama relented and a secret courtesy meeting was arranged. The meeting began with Murdoch sitting down, knee to knee with Obama, at the Waldorf-Astoria. The younger man was deferential--and interested in his story. Obama pursued: What was Murdoch's relationship with his father? How had he gotten from Adelaide to the top of the world?

Murdoch, for his part, had a simple thought to share with Obama. He had known possibly as many heads of state as anyone living today--had met every American president from Harry Truman on--and this is what he understood: nobody got much time to make an impression. Leadership was about what you did in the first six months.

Then, after he said his piece, Murdoch switched places and let his special guest, Roger Ailes, sit knee to knee with Obama.

Obama lit into Ailes. He said that he didn't want to waste his time talking to Ailes if Fox was just going to continue to abuse him and his wife, that Fox had relentlessly portrayed him as suspicious, foreign, fearsome--just short of a terrorist.

Ailes, unruffled, said it might not have been this way if Obama had more willingly come on the air instead of so often giving Fox the back of his hand.

A tentative truce, which may or may not have vast historical significance, was at that moment agreed upon.

People this is just like Obama's foreign policy. He talks with his enemies. This is diplomacy in action. See how he made Murdoch court him. Carrot and the stick, Obama carries a big stick.

More like inside the Murdoch office. Obama gets a paragraph. Oh, well, anybody can spin.

Um, right before McCain accepts his nomination, nice comparison for that audience. After a very good showing by Obama and lack luster performance by McCain, this should get the audience thinking a little more objectively about who will be better for America at this time. I hope they are up front and not trying to sandbag the interview with dumb off the wall questions. I think they too see the writing on the wall. McCain is all wrong for this country as president. Old Hannity will be green with envy.

"I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge... politicians unlike other men, with a favorable presumption that they do no wrong. If there is any presumption, it is the other way against holders of power ... Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

I recall that Daniel Webster and the Devil had a meeting as well. Webster didn't come out so bad.

Doing business with Murdoch and Ailes is doing business with the devil himself. There are no principles or morals at Fox, and Fox/Newscorp is desperate these days having lost 34% last year. They will stop at nothing to aggrandize corporate greed run amok, and as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, they will use this meeting as a means of attempting to distract the good will afforded Obama in these days following the most moving DNC event ever... The politics of hate knows no bounds, and the Murdoch/Ailes team embodies hate politics. ENOUGH!

Why should any Democrat appear on Fox? I don't think Hillary should have done it. They made jokes about her killing Vince Foster and about having PMS. Why would any Democrat want to associate with these sexists/racists? I doubt you'll hear them call Bristol Palin a baby mama like they did Michelle Obama.

Murdoch daughter, Elisabeth is a long time supported of Obama, she held a fund
raising for him in April. Rupert and Elisabeth have been on the outs for a very long
time. Maybe, Murdoch is realizing that is he standing in the check out line of life, and
wants to make amends with his daughter.

One can only hope Obama isn't dumb enough to believe ANYTHING Ailse and Rupert say. They are the sort who pat you on the back but only because they are looking for the soft spot to stick the knife in.

These people are snakes in the grass and would gladly sell America to the Middle East if it got them more money than they already can't spend. All they are is greedy power hungry corporate pimps who would also sell their mothers for a buck.

Obama is right to keep them at arm's length. I could not believe that Roger made that comment with a straight face that if Obama had simply come begging for Fakenews coverage at their studios they would have treated him more kindly.

Snakes...all of 'em.

How naive. He's not listening to Murdoch. He's pitching to him. It's a movie scrip called: "Selling America By The Acre: Part 44." Stop being so gullible.

The only gullible person is the one who thinks Obama was pitching. Roger and Rupert NEVER receive, no matter what anyone says. Read the article, Rupert is the biggest snake on the planet, next to Herr Rove.

Stop being so gullible.
