Fiorina

During the primary campaign, charges that Barack Obama or his surrogates engaged in sexist politics were, perhaps contrary to conventional wisdom, not all that common. For starters, much of that derision was aimed at the media -- several pundits and hosts in particular. Secondly, Hillary Clinton shied away (at least publicly) from inserting gender into the campaign, much to the consternation of her female supporters.

So it is with a little tinge of surprise and much more newsworthiness that the McCain campaign leveled charges of sexism today at Barack Obama for his treatment of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

In a comment sent out by the Arizona Republican's aides, adviser Carly Fiorina said she was "appalled by the Obama campaign's attempts to belittle Governor Sarah Palin's experience. The facts are that Sarah Palin has made more executive decisions as a Mayor and Governor than Barack Obama has made in his life. Because of Hillary Clinton's historic run for the Presidency and the treatment she received, American women are more highly tuned than ever to recognize and decry sexism in all its forms. They will not tolerate sexist treatment of Governor Palin."

As evidence, Fiorina pointed to comments from Joe Biden calling Palin "good looking" and Obama comparing his campaign staff to the "50 employees" under Palin's control as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.

McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer chimed in with a Wall Street Journal op-ed entitled "Ignore The Chauvinists, Palin Has Real Experience:

Ms. Palin has a tangible, impressive record of achievement and executive experience. She is head of the Alaska National Guard and the chairman of two multistate agencies that make energy decisions that affect all Americans. While Barack Obama spent almost all of the past two years running for president, Ms. Palin has been running a state.

...

All women should be proud of Mr. McCain's selection of Ms. Palin as his running mate, an historic moment that came the week of the 88th anniversary of women's earning the right to vote. Sarah Palin will break through the glass ceiling that, as she noted on her first day as the vice presidential nominee, has 18 million new cracks thanks to Hillary Clinton.

Fiorina's Biden example may be taken out of context. The Senator was actually mocking himself, saying Palin was more pleasant on the eyes than he. And her latter complaint is more politics than gender. But Pfotenhauer and Fiorina's statements are illustrative in two ways: they suggests that the McCain camp is growing more and more concerned with the mounting criticism of Palin and are hoping (in the classical political sense) to assume the role of victim. It also demonstrates the extent to which racial and gender sensitivities will dominate the general election. In the end, moreover, it could make Hillary Clinton an even more important actor in this process as she becomes the de facto referee of what attacks on Palin are legitimate and which are out of bounds.

During the primary campaign, charges that Barack Obama or his surrogates engaged in sexist politics were, perhaps contrary to conventional wisdom, not all that common. For starters, much of that deris...

The story is not Gov. Palin, a minor wingnut whose national career should be brief, but John "Country First" McCain, who has failed to treat the selection of a running mate as a matter of importance to his nation. In fact, his country's interests were the last thing he had in mind when he chose to skip the vetting process and suck up to the same fringe zealots who have given us eight disastrous years of extremist politics. It is almost sad to watch the "maverick" sacrifice his reputation and legacy late in life, but his lust for power at any cost is not to be ignored by voters.

When Hillary Clinton was first lady, the Republicans accused her of murdering Vince Foster, making false statements in Travelgate, and accused her of being involved in Whitewater. They also demolished her healthcare plan, were angry when she said she didn't stay home and bake cookies as First Lady of Arkansas, and basically showed her little or no respect as an intelligent assertive woman...

"Obama comparing his campaign staff to the "50 employees" under Palin's control as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska."

Fiorina do your homework!!

"Palin has cited her mayoral work as a central part of her qualification to serve as governor. But at the beginning of her term, asked by the local newspaper how she would run the city without experienced department heads, she made the job sound like no big deal: "It's not rocket science. It's $6 million and 53 employees."

Watch for Fiorina and others to attempt to turn every criticism of Palin into a sexist attact, Sarah the victim and unfair media bias.

As we say 'down-under' Fiorina is just pis..ng in the wind!

When Republicans pick women for important slots, they don't seem to look for the most qualifified women. Certainly, there are more qualified Republican women for th VP slot than Ms. Palin - as there were more qualified women than Harriet Miers that Bush could have chosen for the Supreme Court.

Don't forget that Carly Fiorina did an awful job at HP - she was fired (or should have been)!

Republican women should be screaming at this appointment not getting into lock-step behind another sham. My Democratic party has faults but at least we can be proud of Hillary Clinton!

"McCain campaign leveled charges of sexism today at Barack Obama for his treatment of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin."

Here's the problem with that logic ... actually, McCain is treating Palin in a sexist manner by having her as a VP candidate that he can control. That is real sexism at work!!! He's just using her as a shield. It's a poor and pathetic attempt at appealing to women voters. What is he thinking ... that women can't see the truth?

Yes! That's what I said somewhere... Imagine a President McCain and VP Palin in an argument over an issue. Does anyone actually believe McCain would listen to and consider her ideas? Please.

Cal Thomas (I cannot bear to read him, my husband relayed this to me) has a piece today in which - get this -

He praises Gov. Palin for wearing a skirt and heels at the announcement because according to Cal we are all sick of pantsuits. He says that "ought to count for something."

That's beyond sexist, it's insulting on so many levels I can't even go there.

I thought Caribou Barbie was once Barricuda Sara. She takes on big oil and corrupt party bosses and spits them out like moose bones. Suddenly, she is sweet and demure and must be whispered to. By the way, where is Sister Sara? With all the sexism in the air, it would seem a perfect time to for her to give a big Alaskan growl.

Expect Gov. Palin to do well tonight. She may be new, but she is good.
Despite her inexperience, she DID beat sitting Governor Murkowsk, and she did beat Big Oil, partly because they thought she would be easy. She is NOT.

They lowered the expectations on her, but she WILL exceed them.
Do not underestimate this woman. She is tough and she is smart.

And she really knows how get things done.

She is being coached like no other, she better do well.

She beat Murkoswski because he was so deeply hated ... the ole' vote AGAINST someone as opposed to voting FOR someone.

As for getting things done, she missed the sex talk with her daughter.

Do remember she was part of a group that wanted to Alaska to succeed from the US. Is this putting "Country First"? Let's hope she doesn't get that done.

It's always fun to watch the gops cower behind the shield of political correctness when they're called out on their own bad decisions on the grounds of the criteria and standards they impose upon everyone else.

I think mcpow's in a tough spot. He can''t dump palin because it'll reflect his poor judgment. He can't win with her, either. If she withdraws she'll have disgraced her family for nothing and will highlight the disorganization of mcpow's campaign.

The delegates could select another VP but that would exposes their disunity.

The only strategies he knows is to stay the course or hit the eject button. Either way, good riddance.
