Fiorina

During the primary campaign, charges that Barack Obama or his surrogates engaged in sexist politics were, perhaps contrary to conventional wisdom, not all that common. For starters, much of that derision was aimed at the media -- several pundits and hosts in particular. Secondly, Hillary Clinton shied away (at least publicly) from inserting gender into the campaign, much to the consternation of her female supporters.

So it is with a little tinge of surprise and much more newsworthiness that the McCain campaign leveled charges of sexism today at Barack Obama for his treatment of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

In a comment sent out by the Arizona Republican's aides, adviser Carly Fiorina said she was "appalled by the Obama campaign's attempts to belittle Governor Sarah Palin's experience. The facts are that Sarah Palin has made more executive decisions as a Mayor and Governor than Barack Obama has made in his life. Because of Hillary Clinton's historic run for the Presidency and the treatment she received, American women are more highly tuned than ever to recognize and decry sexism in all its forms. They will not tolerate sexist treatment of Governor Palin."

As evidence, Fiorina pointed to comments from Joe Biden calling Palin "good looking" and Obama comparing his campaign staff to the "50 employees" under Palin's control as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.

McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer chimed in with a Wall Street Journal op-ed entitled "Ignore The Chauvinists, Palin Has Real Experience:

Ms. Palin has a tangible, impressive record of achievement and executive experience. She is head of the Alaska National Guard and the chairman of two multistate agencies that make energy decisions that affect all Americans. While Barack Obama spent almost all of the past two years running for president, Ms. Palin has been running a state.

...

All women should be proud of Mr. McCain's selection of Ms. Palin as his running mate, an historic moment that came the week of the 88th anniversary of women's earning the right to vote. Sarah Palin will break through the glass ceiling that, as she noted on her first day as the vice presidential nominee, has 18 million new cracks thanks to Hillary Clinton.

Fiorina's Biden example may be taken out of context. The Senator was actually mocking himself, saying Palin was more pleasant on the eyes than he. And her latter complaint is more politics than gender. But Pfotenhauer and Fiorina's statements are illustrative in two ways: they suggests that the McCain camp is growing more and more concerned with the mounting criticism of Palin and are hoping (in the classical political sense) to assume the role of victim. It also demonstrates the extent to which racial and gender sensitivities will dominate the general election. In the end, moreover, it could make Hillary Clinton an even more important actor in this process as she becomes the de facto referee of what attacks on Palin are legitimate and which are out of bounds.

This letter from a longtime resident of Wasilla who knows Sarah Palin is a must-read for anyone who plans to vote or even talk about this election.

BTW there is not a sexist word in it.

P.S. Don't miss the part about trying to fire the librarian. Sarah Palin wants to ban books.

I'm sure Carly Fiorina thinks it's sexism that let her rise to the top job in Hewlett-Packard and the reason she got fired. Nothing to do with running the company into the ground.

It makes me puke to hear Carly talk about sexism.

This election has cost all women plenty. Women behaving badly and hiding behind false cries of sexism does not help us at all.

They openly admit that the Palin pick was an effort to win over disgruntled women who supported HRC
(a truly sexist move) and accuse the Democrats for being sexist for attacking her "experience"?

Moreover, I saw Biden's comments and he also said that Obama was good looking and athletic so I guess the next hateful charge from the Republicans will be that Joe Biden is "in the closet"!

How stupid are Republican supporters who refuse to recognize the hypocrisy?

To be a Republican you are either:

a) Incredibly uninformed and stupid
b) criminally greedy.

"Where's that lovely Ape?"

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so...?"

Sexism claims from the McCain camp? Consider the source.

The McCain camp is cryig sexism to get those Hillary supporters. It's only a ploy. I have even heard comments from many Christian Conservative women say that Gov. Sarah Palin might have her priorities reversed. Especially, after giving birth to a special needs child, who needs his "mommy" and not his sister (Bristol). Also, the news that her daughter Bristol is pregnant, doesn't set too well. Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, has endorsed Sarah Palin. But, maybe Sarah Palin should focus on her own family.

Now they're crying about sexism with Palin?

If anybody should be blamed for the media's attention on Palin, they should blame McCain. He knew he was the presumptive nominee when, back in February? He had all this time to find a running mate and procrastinated until the very last minute. Now everybody's trying to scramble to get information on this woman who could very well be our president when McCain kicks it, if he wins the election. Blame McCain...

Is this the best they can do? I find no sexist comment in any of their (Obama/Biden) remarks on Palin. Keep stirring the pot, Carly.

PS: Stop comparing her to Clinton. She is NO CLINTON. Not even close.

Funny, when Hillary Clinton was First Lady, the Republicans hated her... had no respect for her as an intelligent woman with something to offer. They wanted her to sit quietly at his side and smile. So why now are they holding her up as some sort of hero? I don't see their sincerity...

Imagine if McCain/Palin win the election. There's a decision that needs to be made. McCain sees it one way, Palin sees it another. Can anyone actually picture John McCain listening to Sarah Palin's ideas and actually considering them? Or do you think he'd dismiss her if she doesn't completely agree with everything he says?

The Republicans have played us all for a fool over and over again. And here they go again. First they trot Palin out on the banner of "She is qualified because she is a mother." In her introduction speech last week she highlighted only two of her five children who are political assets -- the son who is deploying to Iraq and the baby that she did not abort even though she was told that he would be born with a serious disability. Meanwhile if you look at the pictures of that staged moment, you'll notice that the pregnant daughter is holding her baby brother in a way that just so happens to hide her own baby bump. Pretty disgusting from my perspective.

I too believe that children should be shielded from the political melee. However, if one of your primary appeals to the voters is that "I'm a mother just like you," then surely the voters have a right to evaluate the effectiveness of your mothering style including outcomes and not just the positive ones like the fact that you raised a son to honor duty to country. To engage in such critiques is not sexist but rather just a fair evaluation of the criteria that the McCain camp itself put forward for evaluating his running mate.

These people are crazy, crazy, crazy, the real sexism is the calculated way of choosing this woman in order to cry sexism. When is this Fiorina person going to shut up and go home, now I know why they got rid of her at Hewlett Packard.

Not really because then you have the problem with Obama's lack of experience and he's at the top of the ticket. My girl already did that commercial!

Good try GOP Dinosaurs. Can't qute get that label to stick.

GOP recipe for success of label sticking:

Take equal parts oil, blood, and holy water, repeatedly pound into publics memory cells whenever a question of competancy or collusion occurs. Once paste becomes murky and bubbles with gasps of fear and numbness it's ready.

Apply to forehead of the voters unwilling to read or form personal opinions.

McCain is the sexist one in this case. From all the qualified women McCain could have chosen, he picked the woman who is the biggest embarassment. The Republican party remains the party of rich elderly white men.

Had the GOP really wanted to gain respect and votes from women they would have selected the top-ranking republican female with the name recognition, foreign policy experience and background for the ticket instead of a "cheerleader". You have to remember that Hillary Clinton IS qualified, and was not just a token thrown into the race on a whim.
