Fiorina

During the primary campaign, charges that Barack Obama or his surrogates engaged in sexist politics were, perhaps contrary to conventional wisdom, not all that common. For starters, much of that derision was aimed at the media -- several pundits and hosts in particular. Secondly, Hillary Clinton shied away (at least publicly) from inserting gender into the campaign, much to the consternation of her female supporters.

So it is with a little tinge of surprise and much more newsworthiness that the McCain campaign leveled charges of sexism today at Barack Obama for his treatment of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

In a comment sent out by the Arizona Republican's aides, adviser Carly Fiorina said she was "appalled by the Obama campaign's attempts to belittle Governor Sarah Palin's experience. The facts are that Sarah Palin has made more executive decisions as a Mayor and Governor than Barack Obama has made in his life. Because of Hillary Clinton's historic run for the Presidency and the treatment she received, American women are more highly tuned than ever to recognize and decry sexism in all its forms. They will not tolerate sexist treatment of Governor Palin."

As evidence, Fiorina pointed to comments from Joe Biden calling Palin "good looking" and Obama comparing his campaign staff to the "50 employees" under Palin's control as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.

McCain adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer chimed in with a Wall Street Journal op-ed entitled "Ignore The Chauvinists, Palin Has Real Experience:

Ms. Palin has a tangible, impressive record of achievement and executive experience. She is head of the Alaska National Guard and the chairman of two multistate agencies that make energy decisions that affect all Americans. While Barack Obama spent almost all of the past two years running for president, Ms. Palin has been running a state.

...

All women should be proud of Mr. McCain's selection of Ms. Palin as his running mate, an historic moment that came the week of the 88th anniversary of women's earning the right to vote. Sarah Palin will break through the glass ceiling that, as she noted on her first day as the vice presidential nominee, has 18 million new cracks thanks to Hillary Clinton.

Fiorina's Biden example may be taken out of context. The Senator was actually mocking himself, saying Palin was more pleasant on the eyes than he. And her latter complaint is more politics than gender. But Pfotenhauer and Fiorina's statements are illustrative in two ways: they suggests that the McCain camp is growing more and more concerned with the mounting criticism of Palin and are hoping (in the classical political sense) to assume the role of victim. It also demonstrates the extent to which racial and gender sensitivities will dominate the general election. In the end, moreover, it could make Hillary Clinton an even more important actor in this process as she becomes the de facto referee of what attacks on Palin are legitimate and which are out of bounds.

During the primary campaign, charges that Barack Obama or his surrogates engaged in sexist politics were, perhaps contrary to conventional wisdom, not all that common. For starters, much of that deris...

This was the campaign theme of the day. Fiorina went directly after Obama and Biden, but when she was pressed for examples they changed strategy. I saw several conservative pundits and republican pols say almost the exact same thing. (can we say talking points memo) The line was...these liberal women better quit critisizing Sarah Palin because she chose to be a working mom, or women are going to rally to her defense. They all stated how outraged they were. Who are these liberal women doing this, nobody names names. It is the classic strawman argument. McCain campaign strategy..lie and divide....lie and divide.

The Republicans lie so much, they wouldn't know the truth if it slapped them in the face. I am so sick of the lies and exaggerations!

On another note, according to the Gallup polls:

Obama now has 81% of the women voters who backed Hillary, up from 70% a little over a week ago. Maybe their tactic of USING Palin to attract Hillary voters won't work.

We need Hillary on the stump to go after Palin. Then they can't cry sexism!

The Republicans shot themselves in the foot by selecting Palin. It is an insult to women who support Hillary Clinton for what she represents and her accomplishments that McCain thinks so low of them that he just dipped his stubby hands in his magic hat to pull out this rabbit (Palin) to deceive women. McCain has no respect for women.

Unless a candidate is an old white guy, the minority the candidate belongs to will accuse the naysayers as "----ist" (fill in the blank). It hap pended to Hill, Barry, and SP. It will probably continue for quite some time to come, sadly.

SCREW Carly Fiorina ... It is not 'sexism' to point out the lame VP pick.

3 reasons Rove picked Palin:
1. She's a woman - so GOP can use "sexism" card.

2. She was mayor for 5,000 people (smaller than some high schools in this country) and Gov. for 20 months - Rove banked on the premise that with such LITTLE experience there can't be much in her closet -- WRONG.

3. Rove thought he'd get 2 birds with one stone: rightwinged zealots & hillary voters.

Here in VA, I've seen nothing but Obama ads, not ONE from John McCain, seems like they're pulling the plug in terms of ad time...

Playing the sexism card, like the POW card, is a sign of desperation. Let's ask Hillary Clinton if the sexism card worked for her, oh wait it didn't, it just turned a lot more people off and people eventually got tired of it.

Palin is indefensible, no matter which way you look at her, she's barely good eye candy, she's been an absentee mom who lusts political power over family, has very little experience compared to Obama, Biden, and McCain, and even makes Bush look like a liberal in comparison. Her selection was clearly a pander move for Hillary voters, and the Republicans are reaping what they sowed.

One of the GOP talking points for Tuesday seems to have been that "Palin and McCain are the same."

Well, if that is true, then one would have to logically conclude that McCain is as incompetent to hold high office as his running mate Palin.

I haven't heard or read much from Obama, Biden, or their campaign regarding Palin except "lay off the children." And the only criticisms directed towards Palin I read or heard are the net. I'm surely not seeing them on television.

Perhaps there isn't any need for them to say anything. They do not want to be perceived as needlessly attacking a woman, and on the very face of it her nomination is a damning indictment of McCain's ability to make good judgments.

To everyone but the far, far, far right, choosing Palin has been one more example of why McCain cannot be trusted to hold the highest office in the country.

Everyone would like to think that the old, white prisoner-of-war would be a competent President, but everyday we get another example of why he is anything but. On the other hand, with every passing day, we get more reasons to trust Sen. Obama to be the President that we need.

can we for once and for all stop lumping hillary and palin together? the pick of palin by mccain is historically significant because it is the first time a woman has been on a republican ticket and that is a glass ceiling of a kind, but it is not the one that hillary was referring to. she was running for president, was the first woman to win any primary, and the cracks in the ceiling were put there by 18 million voters who were both women and men. no one has voted for palin to be where she is; her position is the choice of one man and is probably the most undemocratic position in our entire government. it is significant because of its importance, however it is more akin to being appointed to a cabinet position than what hillary accomplished this year. even if mccain/palin would win, the highest glass ceiling in the country would remain intact. so please stop equating yourself with hillary, sarah palin, because you ain't her.

p.s. isn't she the one that told the media that hillary was "a whiner".
