I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Sarah Palin

Laura McGann, an enterprising reporter for the online Washington Independent, was doing a basic check on John McCain's VP choice, Sarah Palin, and called up Kristie Smithers, the Wasilla City Clerk where Palin was Mayor. Ever courteous, McGann thanked Smithers, noting that she must have fielded request after request from the McCain campaign and Republican vetters.

"She chuckled," McGann wrote. "Then she told me that I'm the first person who has asked her office for anything."

The incident reflects the apparently superficial examination of Palin's past and present by the McCain campaign - a lapse that has produced a seemingly unrelenting series of negative news stories, many stemming from the new media, many catching Republican operatives off guard and many demonstrates the lightening fast response of both the blogosphere and the mainstream media.

Palin has turned into a media goldmine, not least for that pioneer of the Web, The Huffington Post.

On Tuesday morning, HuffPost staffers Nico Pitney and Sam Stein, after burrowing through online material from Palin's church, the Wasilla Assembly of God, disclosed that the prospective Vice President tends to see God's hand in -- indeed God's endorsement of -- controversial national policies.

In a talk to the church congregation on the Iraq War, for example, Palin said "[Pray] for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God....That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

On an entirely different front, also disclosed by HuffPost, Palin, in supporting a $30 billion Alaskan national gas pipeline project, said: "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that."

Faced with an onslaught of critical stories, the McCain campaign has adopted a strategy of knocking down some incomplete or imperfectly substantiated stories and blaming them on the Obama campaign.

In a recent email to the press, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers wrote: "All: I know that the Obama campaign is pushing around many false attacks on Governor Palin, and wanted to make sure you had the facts. The allegations that Gov. Palin was a member of Alaska Independence Party are false. She's never been a member of the Alaska Independence Party. Gov. Palin has been a registered Republican ever since 1982, as the records attached show. It would be nice if the media outlets covering this garbage actually did their due diligence in reporting, and didn't just push Obama campaign/Daily Kos smears."

Story continues below

In fact, Palin's continued membership in the Republican Party, records of which Rogers attached, do not preclude her participation in an Alaska secession movement and there have been a number of members of the Alaska Independence Party who have told reporters that Palin attended the 1994 AIP convention. As ABC correspondent Jake Tapper blogged, "while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is 'Country First,' the AIP's motto is the exact opposite - 'Alaska First -- Alaska Always'."

In some respects, coverage of Palin has become something like a professional wrestling tag team contest, with one outlet breaking a piece of a story, and another following up and expanding coverage.

The Washington Post, for example, wrote that Palin hired as a lobbyist for Wasilla Steven Silver, former chief of staff to now indicted Senator Ted Stevens. Soon after that, Kate Klonick and Zachary Roth of Talking Points Memo added some spice to the story:

According to Senate lobbying disclosure reports...from 2002 to 2004 Silver listed as a client Jack Abramoff's lobbying firm, Greenberg Traurig. On Greenberg's behalf, Silver lobbied the federal government on 'issues relating to Indian/Native American policy,' 'exploration for oil and gas' and 'legislation relating to gaming issues' -- the very issues that Abramoff headed up for Greenberg at the time. In other words, Silver appears to have been a part of Team Abramoff" -- the controversial lobbyist widely viewed as McCain's nemesis.

The mainstream media has been no slouch in tracking Palin. Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post, for example, broke the story that Palin had been a director of a "527" independent expenditure organization working in behalf of Senator Stevens' re-election. McCain has been an adamant critic of such organizations.

Even the McCain campaign's defensive strategy in dealing with the Palin controversies is being vetted by the blogosphere. Marc Ambinder posted the campaign's internal email telling delegates and others to counter inquiries by saying the Palin family's privacy should be respected.

While stiff-arming inquiring reporters may work to help a delegate who otherwise would not know what to say, the McCain's failure to fully vet Palin is blood in the water for the press -- something like an aphrodisiac for Don Juan: There is no stopping the media, new and old, in the hunt for Palin stories.

The McCain campaign is admitting that Obama and Daily Kos know more about Sarah Palin than they do? That's scary.

""All: I know that the Obama campaign is pushing around many false attacks on Governor Palin, and wanted to make sure you had the facts."

Nothing ticks me off more than when a supposed journalist allows some slick head, yellow spine, powdered face individual, with a political axe to grind and a bold face lie to tell, to get away with falsehoods like those quoted above. I always want to interject in the middle of the interview and demand the enemy of truth and decency produce proof for their invalid claim.

The GOP is hypocritical to the core. They tried to emasculate Mr. Obama via the faux Reverend Wright scandal, the ludicrous Barack was eight years old when it mattered -- William Ayers pipedream, the Michelle Obama as Black Ops commando merry-go-round, and the Tony Rezco hyped hubba-ba-loo, hula-hoop distracting, pet rock trending, humbug of a twisted hop scotch game of pointless and meaningless concern. In short, they sought to demonize and marginalize with stories of no consequence and value and now they are indignant. As the Reverend said, the chickens are coming home, to roost! Jeremiah you are a mad genius in your prophecy. Remember, he also said at the press club, (where he showed his natural behind and rightfully so) that if God wills an Obama victory, there will be nothing anyone can do to stop it. That remains true.

Since the Republican'ts didn't do their job (as usual), it's up to the media, new and old, to throughly vet Sarah Palin. It is vitally important that the American people know who this person is before she end's up a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Here's what Mikey is blathering about:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13084.html

It's a research document from Palin's 2006 Democratic opponent in the 2006 Alaskan Governor race, Tony Knowles.

The pdf of the research document is linked about half down down the Politico article.

Palin's social security is fully blacked out.

I checked on the tally of the 2006 election that made Sarah a Governor.

She got 99,619 votes to win with 49% of the vote.

Her opponent Tony Knowles got 83,640 votes or 41 % of the vote.

Obama got 18,000,000 votes and he will pick up most if not all of Hillary's 18,000,000 votes.

Are the Republitards REALLY trying to say she is more qualified??

Tick, tick, tick enjohy your 15 minutes Sarah.

The one thing they are NOT vetting is themselves...and their inability to properly examine their own decades-old fix on McCain -- the "maverick." Let me get this straight. McCain wants..REALLY REALLY wants Lieberman. But it is Rove -- Bush's guy -- who won't let him but insists he must bow low to the religious right. So does he choose who he wants? The one he thinks is best for the job? Does he buck the powers that be in Washington? No, he chooses someone who is clearly not ready to be president but who fits the social conservative agenda. Maverick? Come on!

Now Obama has been saying that McCain means 4 more years of Bush and that's exactly what this choice confirms. Far from being the act of a maverick, it shows cowardice and poor judgment all wrapped into one big mistake given to us by the Bush team. The maverick this year then is Obama...who had the courage of his convictions and who resisted all the pressure to go with Hillary.

But we won't hear this from the media. They'll be mezmerized by Look over here! She's a woman!!!!! And while it may be difficult to criticize a woman, shouldn't the press be looking at McCain anyway..and not Ms. Palin. He's the scarecrow made out of sawdust who's got nothing but bluster.

Precisely, his selection of Palin, the candidate of those McCain once called the agents of intolerance, demonstrates his weakness and submission to the extreme Right Wing of his party.

As an Alaskan, I don't think Alaska is going to want Palin back as Governor after the Republicans lose the election in November -- not after all the dirt is unearthed.... Everyone will feel all warm and fuzzy about Palin after her big speech -- but when she is not scripted and begins doing real interviews, (assuming she is allowed to by her handlers) everyone will see what a country bumpkin she really is.

On another front: I'm watching the Republican convention and every face is white! Yea, they represent all the people all right!

She won't be doing real interviews. When she answers questions it will be from friendly audiences or, if on TV, from Fox News. You won't see her on Meet the Press or Schieffer's Show, or CNN. You may see her on Stephanopolous since they have suckups George Will, Cokie Roberts, and usually another right winger, with Sam Donalson tossed in as the token. They can protect her throughout the campaign so no one will ever get to ask her if she knows the names of the leaders of Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan.

I'm afraid Mayor Palin is going to leave the biggest stain on Alaska since the Exxon Valdez.

Which is a shame, because it's a beautiful state filled with honest, hardworking people.

But when the rest of America sees how much money has been heading north courtesy of Ted Stevens, Sarah Palin and others, there is going to be some serious blowback.

If Mc Cain wants the media to do their job. Don't stop the media from investigating Trig's biological mother. Instead of leaking "Bristol's baby secret" lets see Trig's birth Certificate and Sarah Palin's medical record. True, I am a man, but no way no way NO WAY she would return to work in 3 days after giving birth to a baby with down syndrome
PS If she is the mother STILL shame on her- 3 days? Are you kidding me wow. 3 days

If this is the shabby way McBush makes such an important decision, what does it say about how he'll deal with decisions as president? My bet is that he just impulsively decided on his own to select Miss Sarah without the knowledge of his staff and now they all have to do some quick CYA!

There has been a creeping laziness to the candidates of both stripes. Both Clinton and Obama campaigns have been guilty of blaming the media for their own teams inability to get their message out effectively. But this takes the cake. McCain people have nothing to complain about. The media is doing their job! If you'd done your vetting, you'd have a set response for all these stories coming out, or better yet, you wouldn't have picked her in the first place

you've hit on the problem. the republicans will blindly smile while sticking to their talking points. the truth will have a frustratingly hard time to get out. the media is already soft shoeing around the excutive experienced maverick like barracuda who's defense seems to be that every criticism is sexist. had obama given a speech at a black panther party this would be news and the media would be all over it. had joe biden flip flopped on a bridge in delaware twenty years ago they'd be all over it.

the fact is the obama campaign is probably waiting to see how it unfolds, gather info and take appropriate shots; but the fact they have to be carefull illustrates two points:
1) the democrats are too risk averse and
2) the republicans by shouting and interrupting control all conversations.

i'm sure most of you know john mccain has refused to do larry king as scheduled because of campbell brown -- this is the guy with inner strength -- that a reporter demanded an answer is where he draws the line in the sand? patriot act, let's make sure you sanctify censorship lest we offend his sensibilities.

I think that it's smart to wait and then pounce. Let's see if the Legislature in Alaska serves subpeonas. That's when the real fun starts.

This Democratic ticket has been the least risk averse of the last three presidential elections. Also, note the polls. Obama is getting another bounce. The more the Palin story sticks (and they are still talking about her) the worse this gets.
