Laura McGann, an enterprising reporter for the online Washington Independent, was doing a basic check on John McCain's VP choice, Sarah Palin, and called up Kristie Smithers, the Wasilla City Clerk where Palin was Mayor. Ever courteous, McGann thanked Smithers, noting that she must have fielded request after request from the McCain campaign and Republican vetters.

"She chuckled," McGann wrote. "Then she told me that I'm the first person who has asked her office for anything."

The incident reflects the apparently superficial examination of Palin's past and present by the McCain campaign - a lapse that has produced a seemingly unrelenting series of negative news stories, many stemming from the new media, many catching Republican operatives off guard and many demonstrates the lightening fast response of both the blogosphere and the mainstream media.

Palin has turned into a media goldmine, not least for that pioneer of the Web, The Huffington Post.

On Tuesday morning, HuffPost staffers Nico Pitney and Sam Stein, after burrowing through online material from Palin's church, the Wasilla Assembly of God, disclosed that the prospective Vice President tends to see God's hand in -- indeed God's endorsement of -- controversial national policies.

In a talk to the church congregation on the Iraq War, for example, Palin said "[Pray] for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God....That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

On an entirely different front, also disclosed by HuffPost, Palin, in supporting a $30 billion Alaskan national gas pipeline project, said: "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that."

Faced with an onslaught of critical stories, the McCain campaign has adopted a strategy of knocking down some incomplete or imperfectly substantiated stories and blaming them on the Obama campaign.

In a recent email to the press, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers wrote: "All: I know that the Obama campaign is pushing around many false attacks on Governor Palin, and wanted to make sure you had the facts. The allegations that Gov. Palin was a member of Alaska Independence Party are false. She's never been a member of the Alaska Independence Party. Gov. Palin has been a registered Republican ever since 1982, as the records attached show. It would be nice if the media outlets covering this garbage actually did their due diligence in reporting, and didn't just push Obama campaign/Daily Kos smears."

In fact, Palin's continued membership in the Republican Party, records of which Rogers attached, do not preclude her participation in an Alaska secession movement and there have been a number of members of the Alaska Independence Party who have told reporters that Palin attended the 1994 AIP convention. As ABC correspondent Jake Tapper blogged, "while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is 'Country First,' the AIP's motto is the exact opposite - 'Alaska First -- Alaska Always'."

In some respects, coverage of Palin has become something like a professional wrestling tag team contest, with one outlet breaking a piece of a story, and another following up and expanding coverage.

The Washington Post, for example, wrote that Palin hired as a lobbyist for Wasilla Steven Silver, former chief of staff to now indicted Senator Ted Stevens. Soon after that, Kate Klonick and Zachary Roth of Talking Points Memo added some spice to the story:

According to Senate lobbying disclosure reports...from 2002 to 2004 Silver listed as a client Jack Abramoff's lobbying firm, Greenberg Traurig. On Greenberg's behalf, Silver lobbied the federal government on 'issues relating to Indian/Native American policy,' 'exploration for oil and gas' and 'legislation relating to gaming issues' -- the very issues that Abramoff headed up for Greenberg at the time. In other words, Silver appears to have been a part of Team Abramoff" -- the controversial lobbyist widely viewed as McCain's nemesis.

The mainstream media has been no slouch in tracking Palin. Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post, for example, broke the story that Palin had been a director of a "527" independent expenditure organization working in behalf of Senator Stevens' re-election. McCain has been an adamant critic of such organizations.

Even the McCain campaign's defensive strategy in dealing with the Palin controversies is being vetted by the blogosphere. Marc Ambinder posted the campaign's internal email telling delegates and others to counter inquiries by saying the Palin family's privacy should be respected.

While stiff-arming inquiring reporters may work to help a delegate who otherwise would not know what to say, the McCain's failure to fully vet Palin is blood in the water for the press -- something like an aphrodisiac for Don Juan: There is no stopping the media, new and old, in the hunt for Palin stories.

We have hit a real low in our standards. Sarah Palin has presided over a state with a population the size of Columbus Ohio. For a year and a half.
Reckless, impulsive, and completely incapable of sound judgment = John McCain. And if something happens to him in ofice = President Sarah Palin ..........­. God help us all .

When is someone going to challenge Palin to take a DNA test to prove she's actually the mother of the Down's Syndrome baby and put those doubters in their place? A large contribution to the charity of her choice if she IS the mother could be a further inducement.

It'll never happen. Now, especially, that the daughter is pregnant a second time. As someone posted earlier in the week: with a bible-thumping, gun-toting failed beauty queen with an unmarried 17-year-old pregnant for the second time running as VP, can the possibility of a double-wide on the White House lawn be far behind?

The Democrats of course are resistance but not because she's a woman, because she's not qualified.­........an­d it will come out". Alaskans are very nervous and are speaking out about her 'Gestapo' run governance of Alaska. They are angry (except the one's fearful of her troopergate stronghold on innocent people and the money flow rich). They asked her to resign, they talked about impeachment. She tried to buy their votes with an oil compensation tax. Alaskans are terribly worried about their future and the corruption she was/is part of.
Democrats are inclusive, republicans are a private party with private rules of governing a nation. For God's sake....di­dn't you see all the convention hall was old white men and women only. Do a reality check. Democrats.­.Inclusive­.....excep­t for Joe Leiberman. He goes where the warmongers are.

You can't possibly be serious. Palin represents change? Turning back the clock on women's reproductive rights is change? Teaching creationism in school is change? She was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it. That's not change, that's flip flopping.

Her plumbing might be different that what we're used to seeing in Washington, but her policies? They're not change. The're the McSame.

John McCain's "SEPTEMBER SURPRISE", was purposeful, and I'll give you my view. They knew the time for announcing their choice for Veep was threatening their m/o with vetting. I disagree with most, researching Sarah Palin's speech's and comments, bloggers, columnist's words, it's a startling scenario starting to unfold regarding who knew what, when.

The most fascinating part of this, the RNC's decision to create her as running mate. Create her, coaching, speech lessons, adopt, talking points, sexism charge. Geraldine Ferraro, Karl Rove successfully deployed to Fox News.

There will be minimal sexism, not what the country wants. They need bread and butter issues entirely for their own survival, not the woman's movement. Republicans planned months ago, because they truly believed Hillary Clinton would be the nominee by proxy. Obama was a shock. barely enough to attack him on so they tried emasculating him about his faith, race, patriotism, inexperience. With Hillary Clinton they were dumping the entire file they've prepared for her, proudly announcing this toHannity as the 'talking points' hit man to Americans.

Hillary and Geraldine Ferraro praising McCain re:patriotism and 'Commander in Chief" readiness. So, many month's later, with AK ready to explode, Sarah Palin resign or BE IMPEACHED. LAST WINTER THIS TOOK ROOT. EXECUTION DATE......­...give her to the American people as late as possible..­....NO TIME TO VET THIS WOMAN.

I am a woman, disgusted what women do to get ahead IN THE NAME OF FEMINISM instead of putting their COUNTRY FIRST. Think about it.

I have also thought this was orchestrated to be not about the best candidate for VP but about rolling out a woman that would WOW the base and some disgruntled Hillary women. It was a last ditch effort to get elected. I don't think they have the smallest intention of keeping this woman in the VP position. If she helps them win, then soon will come a sorrowful story that she has to resign for personal reasons. Then the maverick president will get to appoint the side kick he always wanted by his side to cue and remember for him. He really didn't have a chance to win with any other of those being vettted, so this is his long shot. After winning, she's a small problem that can be dealt with expediently, before the McMaster kicks the bucket. God save America that elections have come down to this.

This woman is a serious problem, one which they will never admit. So, they set out to make her into the same type of vile criminals that they all are. There's a way for this woman to be ambitious without trampling over women's rights to get ahead.

What amazes me, when Obama came on the scene, all you heard from all the demonistic ReThuglicans; is that we don't know the man. So, the vetting began by the Rethugs, media, talk radio, and all the cable channels with Fox leading the negative train.

Their whole Rethug platform was about fear, values, experience, and then patriotism, when they saw that their negative painting of Obama in that respect, didn't work. They started painting the POW, country first platform for McSame. Once again they paint a picture of fear for this country. This country should clearly be afraid, afraid of the ReThuglican and their war mentality, drill, drill, drill for oil & 45 nuclear plant fantasies.

The ReThugs preach conservatism, yet; they set out to deceive the American voters, kill defenseless people to steal their oil because of this nation’s dependence on it. Yes, we should be very, very afraid.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but; isn't the platform of the ReThugs that women don't get a "choice" of what they can do with their own bodies (abortion). Palin even said, if her daughter was a product of 'RAPE" or INCEST abortion is out of the question. This woman would allow her own daughters to relive a "brutal rape" over and over just to carry a spawn of her rapist that could also be a relative. That clearly says something about her character/ values/morals as a mother/woman and to me as a woman. This is sick and you can't tell me that woman would subject herself or her girls to that kind of vileness.

Women you need to wake up and see where this country is headed if these people are allowed back in the white house and the Supreme Court.

Why on earth is the McCain camp surprised that the media is digging into Palin's background? NOBODY knew who she was. Gender has nothing to do with it. It is the media's job to inform the American public who the unknown Republican VP nominee is. Had the McCain camp done its homework and dug a little deeper (or at all) into her background, then all these controversial stories would not be surfacing. For McCain to blame the Obama campaign is ludicrous. Obama has taken the high road, calling her personal story "compelling" and declaring that her family is "off limits." Obama is smart. He knows that the media will vet this candidate for the American people, and all he has to do is watch her, and McCain's presidential hopes, go down in flames.

I love how the Democrats have gone into a complete frenzy after the pick of Palin. The fact that they are going after her so hard, and on issues relating to her daughter, shows how nervous they are regarding her credentials. They have less that 12 hours to discredit her before she goes in front of the whole nations and outlines her successes as the Governor of Alaska. Yes, my liberal friends, she has had several undeniable successes. The approval of the lastgest natural gas pipeline in North America, the final rejection of the "bridge to no where", etc. show real solutions to American concerns, rather than rhetoric on what could be. Even when Obama went on CNN on Monday and tried to deflect the criticism regarding her executive experience compared to his experience, he compared his running of a presidential campaign to her MAYORAL position!! He claimed that he was in charge of a larger budget and larger workforce in his campaign. So Obama laid down the criteria for experience. The problem with his argument is that while he was running for president, she was running a state with 77 times the budget and 51 times the number of emloyees!!!!! Sorry, dems, but this is apples-to-apples, not the apples-to-oranges that Obama is trying to sell. Obama and the dems knows that Palin is a VP candidate that will put McCain in the white house. Sorry if the truth hurts.

You go right ahead and keep on telling yourself this. McCain will lose, and this is only going to be part of the reason. By picking such a rabid right winger he may have shored up his base, but I doubt anyone that anyone that takes this election seriously will be more likely to vote for McCain now. Palin is a seriously flawed and weak choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Gov. Palin’s family issues are no one’s business but hers, and our nominee has said so. There is not one spokesman for the Democratic Party, or Sen. Obama who has brought this up.

What is ok to discuss is:
Her record of abusing the powers of her office both as a Mayor and a Governor.
Her and her husband’s membership in the AIP, which advocates secession. And this the party of Lincoln.
Her dismal management of her town’s budget (She came in with a $3 mill budget and left them $20 mill in debt.
Her lie about the “bridge to nowhere” and her stand against earmarks. This candidate never met an earmark she didn’t like.
The fact that her management experience includes running a state that has ¼ the population of Chicago, ½ the budget of Chicago, 2 industries, no manufacturing, no border issues, very little crime (it is just too cold), no policy on renewable energy, and all the money they need from oil revenues (that means from you and me folks).
Her belief in creationism, and disbelief in global warming.
He belief in abstinence only education.
Her appalling lack of knowledge of simple issues (the founding fathers wrote the Pledge of Allegiance?)

Did anyone ask her anything before they decided she should be one 72 year old heart beat from the Presidency?
