I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Sarah Palin

Laura McGann, an enterprising reporter for the online Washington Independent, was doing a basic check on John McCain's VP choice, Sarah Palin, and called up Kristie Smithers, the Wasilla City Clerk where Palin was Mayor. Ever courteous, McGann thanked Smithers, noting that she must have fielded request after request from the McCain campaign and Republican vetters.

"She chuckled," McGann wrote. "Then she told me that I'm the first person who has asked her office for anything."

The incident reflects the apparently superficial examination of Palin's past and present by the McCain campaign - a lapse that has produced a seemingly unrelenting series of negative news stories, many stemming from the new media, many catching Republican operatives off guard and many demonstrates the lightening fast response of both the blogosphere and the mainstream media.

Palin has turned into a media goldmine, not least for that pioneer of the Web, The Huffington Post.

On Tuesday morning, HuffPost staffers Nico Pitney and Sam Stein, after burrowing through online material from Palin's church, the Wasilla Assembly of God, disclosed that the prospective Vice President tends to see God's hand in -- indeed God's endorsement of -- controversial national policies.

In a talk to the church congregation on the Iraq War, for example, Palin said "[Pray] for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God....That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

On an entirely different front, also disclosed by HuffPost, Palin, in supporting a $30 billion Alaskan national gas pipeline project, said: "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that."

Faced with an onslaught of critical stories, the McCain campaign has adopted a strategy of knocking down some incomplete or imperfectly substantiated stories and blaming them on the Obama campaign.

In a recent email to the press, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers wrote: "All: I know that the Obama campaign is pushing around many false attacks on Governor Palin, and wanted to make sure you had the facts. The allegations that Gov. Palin was a member of Alaska Independence Party are false. She's never been a member of the Alaska Independence Party. Gov. Palin has been a registered Republican ever since 1982, as the records attached show. It would be nice if the media outlets covering this garbage actually did their due diligence in reporting, and didn't just push Obama campaign/Daily Kos smears."

Story continues below

In fact, Palin's continued membership in the Republican Party, records of which Rogers attached, do not preclude her participation in an Alaska secession movement and there have been a number of members of the Alaska Independence Party who have told reporters that Palin attended the 1994 AIP convention. As ABC correspondent Jake Tapper blogged, "while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is 'Country First,' the AIP's motto is the exact opposite - 'Alaska First -- Alaska Always'."

In some respects, coverage of Palin has become something like a professional wrestling tag team contest, with one outlet breaking a piece of a story, and another following up and expanding coverage.

The Washington Post, for example, wrote that Palin hired as a lobbyist for Wasilla Steven Silver, former chief of staff to now indicted Senator Ted Stevens. Soon after that, Kate Klonick and Zachary Roth of Talking Points Memo added some spice to the story:

According to Senate lobbying disclosure reports...from 2002 to 2004 Silver listed as a client Jack Abramoff's lobbying firm, Greenberg Traurig. On Greenberg's behalf, Silver lobbied the federal government on 'issues relating to Indian/Native American policy,' 'exploration for oil and gas' and 'legislation relating to gaming issues' -- the very issues that Abramoff headed up for Greenberg at the time. In other words, Silver appears to have been a part of Team Abramoff" -- the controversial lobbyist widely viewed as McCain's nemesis.

The mainstream media has been no slouch in tracking Palin. Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post, for example, broke the story that Palin had been a director of a "527" independent expenditure organization working in behalf of Senator Stevens' re-election. McCain has been an adamant critic of such organizations.

Even the McCain campaign's defensive strategy in dealing with the Palin controversies is being vetted by the blogosphere. Marc Ambinder posted the campaign's internal email telling delegates and others to counter inquiries by saying the Palin family's privacy should be respected.

While stiff-arming inquiring reporters may work to help a delegate who otherwise would not know what to say, the McCain's failure to fully vet Palin is blood in the water for the press -- something like an aphrodisiac for Don Juan: There is no stopping the media, new and old, in the hunt for Palin stories.

Hillary needs to come out and say the following:

Sarah, you being here is a step forward for women, but your policies take women 2 steps back.
Please do not use my name to further an agenda I do not endorse.

NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN!!!!

2 steps? Banning aborting even in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother's life would amount to nothing less than a complete cancellation of personhood for women. Take a few minutes to fully imagine a case in which a woman, or even a girl, is raped and then legally forced to carry and give birth to the rapist's child. The collection of cells resulting from the rapist's crime would instantly outrank the victim as a human being.

I'm not sure how many steps that is, but I'm pretty sure it's more than 2. Sorry, obviously I agree with your basic premise. It's just that this issue is far too important to allow the religious right to frame it in terms like "pro-life" or "right to life." No one is legally required to undergo any sort of operation to save the life of another. People die all the time waiting for kidney donations.

No one in our society is legally required to go through anything remotely resembling pregnancy and childbirth, not even as punishment for any serious crime, let alone as punishment for being the victim of a crime. Forcing women into this legally unique postion would have implications for the status of women in our society which would reach far beyond the issue of abortion.

First, SARAH PALIN PUT HER DAUGHTER FRONT AND CENTER NOT THE MEDIA!!! Now, she is even dragging the young supposed father into the mess by having him appear at the RNC. If she wants the media to leave the children alone, then she should act like a mother and protect her child by keeping her as far away from the spotlight as possible. The sad part is that all she had to do was provide a valid birth certificate to show that she is in fact the mother of the 5 month old, but instead, she chose to throw her 17 yr old pregnant daughter out as bait to try and deflect attention from the originial story that she lied to the Alaskan people about being pregnant--which is far more damaging than her 17 yr old being pregnant--again. I read that after she supposedly gave birth to the 5 month old who has downs syndrome, she returned to work in 3 days. What mother in their right mind would leave a newborn child especially one with special needs to return to work in 3 days? By law, all mothers have up to 6 weeks leave after birth. What is wrong with this woman and why do the republicians think the american people are so stupid that we will believe these obvious lies???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:16 AM on 09/03/2008

Yeah, imagine that. Putting her out there so she might learn accountability and consequences of action. To home up to what she did. Heck it might even discourage the other girls from gettin knocked up too. Then we wouldn't have any extra mud to sling.

Bullcrap. She shoved her daughter out there to deflect attention from her own numerous numerous lies. As long as we're all focused on the unwed teenage mother we're ignoring the many other scandals.

The good news is that this suprise pick by McBush has backfired and with the glut of media attention and scrutiny all sorts of new things are being discovered about the mayor of mayberry.

This woman is so unqualified. She's a 16 month governor of a state with less than 600,000 people and only 3 major industries. Before that she was a mayor of a town of less than 6,000 people. My God this woman isn't fit to be a Congress woman. On top of that she says crazy things like this war is God's will.

REPUBLICANS ARE FREAKIN RETARDED!

They demand it to be a private matter then push the girl onto the world stage. She knew no one knew, she knew she was carrying the baby as a cover. She knew it would come out eventually. You don't use your kids that way, your kids are not media tools. Unless you've got an agenda that superceded your parenting choices, that is.

If the kid wanted to marry her, they'd be married already. Why put her daughter through that? Why not introduce her as married and pregnant. Who would've cared near as much? Palin brought this on herself. What a mean, mercenary, short sighted thing to do to her own child. Private is private.

Ever been pregnant when you didn't want to be? Ever known anyone in that position? It's not fun and it's not public, you nit.

How dare you offer a seventeen year old up as a public example. How Islamic of you. What should they do if she doesn't get married, stone her? What if the kids don't want to get married, should they be forced?

You need to think about what is going on here and stop leaning on party this and party that

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:09 AM on 09/03/2008

Yes, great parenting technique. Teach your children accountability by exposing them to the entire world and making an example of them--especially the girls. No one expects the the teenage boys to get the hint and stop dipping their wicks in their gals, do they?

ltva;

Palin is now parading the youmg man to this scandal around now for the media. What riches did Palin promise this kid and his family to ruin his life? Prestige, breakfast, lunch, dinner at the white house for the next 4 years, to pay off all his families bills. Boy, these ReThugs and their abuse of power. The kid said on his my space page, that he didn't want kids yet, this is shotgun. So, they are going to ruin 3 lives to keep their good standing.

What is this country headed for? How are the leaders of foreign countries going to receive this woman? I am pretty sure their religious values belief's frown on stuff like this, so; are they going to take Palin seriously. This is ridiculous, the ReThugs platform is country first.

If "executive experience" trumps plain ol' experience then Palin should be at the top of the ticket. John should run for mayor of Sedona and put in his time as the boss.

I will repeat this until it sinks in...this is the biggest distraction the GOP has ever tried. McCain's campaign manager came out and said that this election is not about the issues. They are being honest for once. They want to use gimmicks to keep our focus off of the real problems this country faces. DON'T FALL FOR IT PEOPLE!

Agreed. They will attempt to expand on yesterday's "sexism" concept tonight:

Democrats were too stupid to seize the day and place a woman on the presidential ticket!

We Republicans will be the first to elect a woman as a VPOTUS...don't miss out on the chance to be part of history! We are the change and ignore those annoying issues!

I am disgusted that this epic moment (if Palin makes it to November) is wasted on an unfortunate unqualified woman mired personal tragedy.

I agree that the GOP has used this whole Palin thing as a distraction. I also believe that we are allowing them to frame the debate, just as they did 8 years ago, by focusing on social/cultural issues instead of focusing on things that really matter. We are never going to agree on abortion, prayer in schools, "family values" (whatever they may be) but this election, more than any other, should be about the economy, energy, the environment and international relations. They are throwing sand in the air.............poor Sarah being picked on by the media etc. We cannot afford another 4 years of the same right-wing ideas and we must continue to remind the country that this is not about Sarah Palin (though she seems to enjoy the attention) or her family - it's about the future direction of the country. Neither she nor McCain have the chops to take on the important work that needs to be done, so encourage all your friends and all the young people you know to get out there and VOTE in November. Let's give McCain/Palin (and Karl Rove) the trouncing they so richly deserve.

Was Sarah Palin prepared for the national media - it does not appear so. What does this say about her being prepared for a world stage? And what does subjecting her family to this scrutiny say about her family values? She should withdraw to protect her family.....................

Hillary said in one of her speeches that a little girl said something to the effect that, thanks to her candidacy, the little girl now believed that she, too, could become president one day.

I have news for that little girl: she is probably wrong. Our society still won't let women rise above a certain point. And it's not just men keeping us down, it is other women as well. After all, if a formidable, intelligent, experienced candidate like HRC couldn't make it, who can? The MSM and all the supermarket rags can trash Palin all they want, but remember, the same thing was done to Hillary.

The message is clear to women. If you aspire to political office, maybe you should choose a different career.

Knock it off and get a grip. The biggest problem HRC had was that half of her own party did not like her. And she was tied to Bill and all his scandals.

No, the message is that a woman who is not qualified for a political office should not aspire to that office.

HRC trashed herself. Get over it and move on with your life. If you hold the bitterness inside you, it will turn on you and make you sick.

Maybe if women run for political office they should learn the rules of the game, which Senator Clinton apparently didn't do, as she kept attempting to change them throughout the primary. Maybe if women run for office they should be able to cope with losing. Maybe if women run for office they should have some qualifications aside from their gender. If anyone has set women back in terms of running for higher office, it is the candidates themselves. I would like to see a woman President soon, but she must be able to lead both her campaign and the country with integrity.

Ah, thank you for your misogyny. I was afraid it had gone missing.

The biggest liability Hillary had was... Bill. It's why I didn't vote for her.

Maybe the lesson to the little girl should be be careful who you marry and don't be afraid to get a divorce.

The slamming of women is so old and tired, aren't you guys over it yet? Sexism, racism, religiosity, classism... it's all alive and well in America. You guys proved the first one in spades.

I respect Obama for saying family is off the table. I however respectfully disagree when the person running, is campaigning on family values and judgment. This is Palin's claim to greatness. She is just what the far right ordered. Do not however discount her ability to attract voters.

Ooooooh, I think we all know the answer to that question. The Obamas would be roasted alive by Dobson etal as unfit, uncaring parents. After all, in Radical Rightland, the only bad pregnant teenagers are african americans. that's the plain and simple truth. Dobson and his ilk are truly ugly human beings.

I don't think that Sarah Palin really thought through the implications of her running for McBush's VP before she said yes-and if that's true, it tells me something about her judgment.

Why is it construed as poor taste to identify Sarah Palin's parenting skills as lacking? Why can't I think that she does not balance her worktime for Alaska and family appropriately? Why am I not allowed to look upon she and her husband as having not done a good job as parents?

My 16 year old attends public high school. I would estimate once every year, ONE girl out of 250 eleventh/twelfth graders gets pregnant. It happens, but do I want the VPOTUS (or POTUS) of my country living with the extra parental commitment/involvement that situation entails? Palin's 17 year old daughter should be at the forefront of making major life decisions about work and college not picking out layettes.

Unwed pregnant teenager's problems are a road I'd rather not have my VPOTUS travelling.

If she can use her son serving in Iraq as an ace in the hole, as well as her downs syndrome afflicted baby, then I don't understand why this particular part of her life is off the table. If you're going to say that part of your appeal is your big family, five kids, etc., (Praise me for not aborting my fetuses!), then you're opening the door yourself.

It's hypocritical to run on family values, your kids, your babies, etc, etc. and then expect everyone to magically treat them like some sort of museum exhibit - "just look, hands off". If she was truly serious about keeping her kids out of the spotlight, she would do what the Clintons did, and what Obama has done: use your BRAIN to keep them out of the spotlight. Form clear boundaries, and be up front with the media about where the lines are.

I believe that Palin is something of a trojan horse created by Karl Rove. This is a blatant attempt to throw the entire media off of focus of the real issues behind the RNC and the campaign proper (Where is the coverage of the protests, where is the coverage of the democratic response?) Everyone is now talking about Palin instead of the real issues at hand; this is a blatant manipulation of the media, and it's working.

The story is not Gov. Palin, a minor wingnut whose national career should be brief, but John "Country First" McCain, who has failed to treat the selection of a running mate as a matter of importance to his nation. In fact, his country's interests were the last thing he had in mind when he chose to skip the vetting process and suck up to the same fringe zealots who have given us eight disastrous years of extremist politics. It is almost sad to watch the "maverick" sacrifice his reputation and legacy late in life, but his lust for power at any cost is not to be ignored by voters.

Lightening is a gradual increase in available light; lightning is a storm's sudden flash of electricity.

I have noticed for quite a while the improper spelling and grammar, incorrect use of words, ie "add" for "ad", "loose bad" for "lose badly", other mistakes too many to list. I heard on the Diane Rehm show on NPR that it is not unusual for college graduates to continue to use incorrect English because proper English is not longer emphasized.

I taught in Los Angeles for seven years. Proper English??? In half the classrooms I couldn't get English at all. The increased use of The Net, the influx of uneducated immigrants, the degeneration of the education system, the heavy use of Spanish are all factors.

It was disturbing. It took about six months post teaching for my own grammar and spelling to feel solid again. I spent so much time reading and hear disasters my own performance was sometimes shaky. Horrible.

THIS BRISTOL PALIN BABY STORY IS A SUBTERFUGE!

If you were running for office, which would be worse?
A). Your 17 yr. old daughter was pregnant
or
B). Your 17 yr. old daughter had an out-of-wedlock baby and YOU LIED AND TOLD THE WORLD IT WAS YOURS TO COVER UP FOR ANY PERCEIVED FAMILY MORAL INDISCRETIONS?

Yes, Bristol Palin is pregnant, but the facts strongly suggest that this is baby # 2 for her and that mom Sarah has been telling a big whopper about herself having a child last spring.

I wish the media wouldn't get thrown off the trail so easily and that they would get on this story for real. It goes directly to her honesty and integrity.
