I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Sarah Palin

Laura McGann, an enterprising reporter for the online Washington Independent, was doing a basic check on John McCain's VP choice, Sarah Palin, and called up Kristie Smithers, the Wasilla City Clerk where Palin was Mayor. Ever courteous, McGann thanked Smithers, noting that she must have fielded request after request from the McCain campaign and Republican vetters.

"She chuckled," McGann wrote. "Then she told me that I'm the first person who has asked her office for anything."

The incident reflects the apparently superficial examination of Palin's past and present by the McCain campaign - a lapse that has produced a seemingly unrelenting series of negative news stories, many stemming from the new media, many catching Republican operatives off guard and many demonstrates the lightening fast response of both the blogosphere and the mainstream media.

Palin has turned into a media goldmine, not least for that pioneer of the Web, The Huffington Post.

On Tuesday morning, HuffPost staffers Nico Pitney and Sam Stein, after burrowing through online material from Palin's church, the Wasilla Assembly of God, disclosed that the prospective Vice President tends to see God's hand in -- indeed God's endorsement of -- controversial national policies.

In a talk to the church congregation on the Iraq War, for example, Palin said "[Pray] for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God....That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

On an entirely different front, also disclosed by HuffPost, Palin, in supporting a $30 billion Alaskan national gas pipeline project, said: "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that."

Faced with an onslaught of critical stories, the McCain campaign has adopted a strategy of knocking down some incomplete or imperfectly substantiated stories and blaming them on the Obama campaign.

In a recent email to the press, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers wrote: "All: I know that the Obama campaign is pushing around many false attacks on Governor Palin, and wanted to make sure you had the facts. The allegations that Gov. Palin was a member of Alaska Independence Party are false. She's never been a member of the Alaska Independence Party. Gov. Palin has been a registered Republican ever since 1982, as the records attached show. It would be nice if the media outlets covering this garbage actually did their due diligence in reporting, and didn't just push Obama campaign/Daily Kos smears."

Story continues below

In fact, Palin's continued membership in the Republican Party, records of which Rogers attached, do not preclude her participation in an Alaska secession movement and there have been a number of members of the Alaska Independence Party who have told reporters that Palin attended the 1994 AIP convention. As ABC correspondent Jake Tapper blogged, "while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is 'Country First,' the AIP's motto is the exact opposite - 'Alaska First -- Alaska Always'."

In some respects, coverage of Palin has become something like a professional wrestling tag team contest, with one outlet breaking a piece of a story, and another following up and expanding coverage.

The Washington Post, for example, wrote that Palin hired as a lobbyist for Wasilla Steven Silver, former chief of staff to now indicted Senator Ted Stevens. Soon after that, Kate Klonick and Zachary Roth of Talking Points Memo added some spice to the story:

According to Senate lobbying disclosure reports...from 2002 to 2004 Silver listed as a client Jack Abramoff's lobbying firm, Greenberg Traurig. On Greenberg's behalf, Silver lobbied the federal government on 'issues relating to Indian/Native American policy,' 'exploration for oil and gas' and 'legislation relating to gaming issues' -- the very issues that Abramoff headed up for Greenberg at the time. In other words, Silver appears to have been a part of Team Abramoff" -- the controversial lobbyist widely viewed as McCain's nemesis.

The mainstream media has been no slouch in tracking Palin. Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post, for example, broke the story that Palin had been a director of a "527" independent expenditure organization working in behalf of Senator Stevens' re-election. McCain has been an adamant critic of such organizations.

Even the McCain campaign's defensive strategy in dealing with the Palin controversies is being vetted by the blogosphere. Marc Ambinder posted the campaign's internal email telling delegates and others to counter inquiries by saying the Palin family's privacy should be respected.

While stiff-arming inquiring reporters may work to help a delegate who otherwise would not know what to say, the McCain's failure to fully vet Palin is blood in the water for the press -- something like an aphrodisiac for Don Juan: There is no stopping the media, new and old, in the hunt for Palin stories.

Early in Scott McCellans book, the strategy of attacking the opponent for using negative campaign tactics as a way to distract people from an obvious liability was detailed. It is being used again. I disagree with Palin on God in politics, womans reproductive rights, and sex ed. in school. She may have one day risen to a more prominent national role, but at this time this is a reckless choice by a dangerous man.

Honest to God, if the press pursued WMDs, Plamegate and Katrina with the same tenacity, we never would've invaded Iraq, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove would be in jail, and Bush would be impeached.

She's a damn religious kook! While she may believe in seperating Alaska from the United States, she sure as hell won't be quick to seperate church from state.

I'm waiting for Mr. Palin's mistress to show up. Someone softer and with more time on her hands to make him feel like a real man. That kind of a mistress. Are we going to say, "Husbands are off limits"? This is getting to be better than the Sapranos; I can't wait for the next episode.

I think it's possible Ms. Palin may excuse herself from the ticket - Word has it that Senator McCain is working on modifying his "ape" joke just for her. Seeing as how popular Sasquatch is up in the great state of Alaska, he's decided that this time the victim will be ravaged by Big Foot...........Old John, ain't he the funny one!

It's looking more and more as if the MSM are going to protect Sarah Palin from herself, the same way they have been with McCain. Sad to say, if any hard news does come out against her, it will probably come from the National Enquirer.

I don't agree. I think the MSM is loving this. It's everywhere and it isn't going away.

I agree with you. MSM ignored the Edwards story and got burned. The Enquirer is camped in Alaska and they will dig out the truth, at least about the juicy scandals. (But not the policy stuff.) Obama doesn't need to do a thing. The tabs are on this one. Stick a fork in her. It will be horribly embarrassing if she quits AFTER giving her speech. But I just can't see her making it to the election; the news that they are trying to push back the troopergate investigation will only fan the flames.

Possibly, it is Ms. Palin who should have investigated Sen. McCain's past - what with the rape jokes, the no vote to equal pay, the tasteless joke about Chelsea Clinton, his special "term of endearment" for Cindy........I'm just sayin'.........

It really has gotten to that point, where the story is no longer about the distortions, lies and ghosts associated with Palin's record, but is now about John McCain's judgment in the review and selection of a running mate.

As it should be. She saw an opportunity to advance herself beyond her wildest dreams. John McCain gave it to her.

I wonder how many times he's put his fist through a wall since Friday. He must be furious at the way she sandbagged him.

And what was she thinking? That all these revelations wouldn't come up? She must really be living in the sticks or in an igloo. And did she really think she was prepared to be V.P.? What vanity! One thing is certainly clear about her is that her thinking is very superficial. Not on par or even close to Obama or Biden.

I don't know about Gergen, but Cafferty made an incredible amount of sense (and as Wolf Blitzer was standing there.... well for some that might as well be the Holy Grail delivery to the masses. And Cafferty just whomped on McCain's judgement and lack of due diligence when it came to vetting Palin.

I wouldn't worry too much. The left just has to keep investigating and PUSHING. That's the best trait the right has in politics is to always keep pushing for a response. The right would never let someone say, "That's a private matter for us, and we won't dignify that with a response." We need to have that resolve as well.
And anyways, the crop is too bountiful with Gov Palin. Why would Palin "out" her daughter, when no one even thought about her daughter being pregnant, to refute some wacky, zany stories about Trig?? If the stories were that crazy she would have let the dems play themselves out as fools. But that's not what she did.

I don't know guys. I think that Americans are the ones that don't get it. I am watching MSNBC right now and Chris Matthews and the rest are all like it doesn't matter what comes out about her because the base is energized over Palin. They also just said that the NYT has to recant some story that Palin was a member of the AIP. So they are already saying that all of this media feeding frenzy doesn't matter and has netted the democrats nothing.
Rachael Maddow is the only one that is saying that she may face problems.
Just think about Florida. Again, I don't know.

Listen, the Nazis had a base, too, and it was very base indeed. Same with the GOP. And those people only have one place to go, the GOP. They weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.

And as fro retracting Palin being a member of the AIP, doesn't matter. She aparenlty had sympathies with them since her husband was a member and she sent a videotaped message to them. So they were hardly anathema to her. This is her Reverend Wright story and we need to keep pushing her against the wall about it.

Whoops. I had an html in my last comment.

I need to get the following information across - I'll feel better for trying.

Just because Sarah Palin is a female does not mean she will further women in the next Administration if by some miracle she is elected. As Governor, she has 14 department heads (Commissioners). Two of them were women until one disagreed with her. Now she is down to 1 -- 1 out of 14 is batting less than 10%.

Her minority appointments are even more dismal. Of course in her appointments to Boards and Commissions she advised Alaskans (in the Juneau Empire) that she does not have to take race into consideration when making appointments.

She is not a breath of fresh air -- she is more of the same and should be quite comfortable on the McCain ticket. This country deserves better.

The City of Wasilla sits within a regional government (the Mat-Su Borough) that exercises certain powers exclusive of the City of Wasilla -- like education. I hope the press further investigates what her executive experience really entailed. Not a large budget in terms of the big picture.

for more information on her performance -- www.andrys.com/palin-kilkenny

So let's look at her performance and experience.

ROVE AND NO-MAV MAC AND HENCHMEN ARE RUNNING IF IT'S 2000 ON A NUMBER OF FRONTS, THEY ARE WAY BEHIND THE CHANGING MEDIA AND NEW TECH. ALso they are way behind in the new voters by the millions who are mostly for O and much more moderate to liberal agenda. They will not be able to rebrand MAC AS some new change agent and try and try to sweet talk PALIN in no matter how well delivered and crafty she is with speech etc. The AMERICA VOTER FOR THE MOST PART is so leary of any more gop old party of power, corruption, war, no health care, education , jobs loss, inflation,, that it will be almost impossible for them to catch up. AND that brings this veep pick back to a more sophisticated tabloid and new media's readiness and effectiveness in digging up the facts on the big or any stories it seeks to find facts, truth on. AND THE PALIN ONE IS one thatr is so influx, stay tuned, THIS WILL GDOG CAMP AND FALLOUT FOR WEEKS,,,,,,,,

I agree with you in spirit, but I don't think it's that they have fallen behind, it's just that the left has been catching up.
In 2000, the left had NO radio presence while the right was heavily entrenched in right-talk radio.
In 2000 the left had no dedicated progressives on TV since the right had driven any notion of progressiveness from television with chants of "liberal media" since the 70's.
In 2000 the left had virtually no Think Tank presence.
In 2000 the left had no internet coordination while DrudgeReport was dictating a lot of the media "storylines."

The left has made great inroads in the radio talk world since then with Air America, Al Franken, Ed Shultz, Stephanie Miller, The Young Turks, etc.
On TV there is Jon Stewart, Colbert, Olberman and Maddow. A long way to go but the quality of those gains is impressive.
Think Tanks? I think we will always trail here.
Internet? This is where progressives have scored big time! There is more real reporting gong on in the progressive internet world than anywhere else. And that really scares the right!

Overall, Progressives are leveling the playing field with the right. The problem is, the right gets slaughtered on anything close to a level playing field, so they will try somehow to unlevel the playing field. Invasion Iran, anyone?

Just a thought- if the National Enquirer receives a boost in circulation due to the Palin story (stories?), it's a given that they will focus on her for at least a couple of weeks. If they continue to sell a high volume of 'newspapers', it's likely that they will continue to feature Palin and her exploits. If, let's say, a group of bloggers started a campaign to purchase the National Enquirer until.. ummmm.... November?....wouldn't there be a good chance that the National Enquirer will continue to run with Sarah stories?

Palin on $30M gas pipe bid: "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that."

This woman is really scary, maybe even crazy.

Reporters have been looking at Palin's somewhat limited executive experience as Mayor of the City of Wasilla. However, little on-the-ground information has been presented as to what that job really entailed and her performance. The City of Wasilla sits within the boundaries of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough boundary -- similar to a county. So, the City of Wasilla exercises some powers whille the Borough has others, such as education. The schools are all part of the Mat-Su Borough School District.

I finally found some feedback re: her perfonrmance at www.andrys.com/palin-kilkenny.html
Interesting.

Also, for people that think because Sarah is female that she supports women in executive positions, think again. She has 14 department heads. Two of them used to be women until one disagreed with her and now there is only one -- one out of 14. Not even batting 10%.

Minority hire -- almost non-existent. She is quoted in the Juneau Empire saying she doesn't have to consider race when making appointments. And obviously she hasn't considered race. So, she is not taking the Republican Party into the future, with women included. She is just more of the same.

So everyone, read up on the woman. We cannot afford to have her a heartbeat away from the head of this country.

As far as naivete, you don' t have to go to Alaska to see that discrepancy about hiring women. You mean to tell me only 2 women were worthy enough for a government position? Your logic suggests that all the work the U.S. Census Bureau is invalidated because they doing go to every state and look into every nook and cranny.

Well, it's not only that, but she so bungled the opening months of her administration as mayor an outside administrator had to be appointed for he to clean up some of the mess.

That might be very Republican, of course (Bush), but the public is fed up with bumbling idiots in the executive branch.

Part-time Mayor. Nice gig. $6 million and 53 employees to 'play with.' Wow--I'll be looking on Craigslist for the posting! Of course we know that because Sarah is a female she doesn't necessarily
support other women in executive positions. ESPECIALLY if they raise any opposition or create a 'problem'. She's a 'token' in a 'tokenistic' campaign. She's getting her 15 minutes of fame and then she'll go back to Alaska. By the way--she really wants to promote the Alaskan ideal of 'sharing the wealth' for the rest of America. She really DOES believe that oil companies will give rebates to everyone! HOWEVER-I do seem to remember seeing that she made one statement that made sense-that she believed that the Iraq war was a war for Oil! YAY! But I think that got lost in all the other kerfuffle over babies and pro-choice and yaddayaddayadda.
