Politico:

Radar reported last night that the National Enquirer, fresh off breaking the John Edwards scandal, was hot in pursuit of the Bristol Palin pregnancy story.

"I definitely think we triggered the announcement," Editor David Perel told Politico this morning.

Perel said that the Enquirer has three reporters -- from "the Edwards team" -- up in Alaska. He said reporters were putting out calls all weekend to members of Palin's family and those around her, as well as the family of the father, Levi Johnson. Perel said there was enough to go on for this week's print edition, even before Monday's statement.

Well it's not something to be proud about. I mean this is not the story that is important. There are other stories that should be covered.

if it is a conspiracy cover-up - it is a huge story.

otherwise, the whole thing says a lot about the woman's judgment and priorities
and she is going to be 2nd in command to a 72 y/o POW with 2 bouts of cancer and obvs. PTSD

Except the Enquirer has moved past investigating the baby story, apparently, and is on to 'bigger scandals.' We'll see.

Sad...I'm strangely comforted by the fact that the National Enquirer is on the Palin story. Where have all the good investigative journalists gone?

I am somewhat in agreement w/you Tex. For all of Enquirer's foolishness they actually do seem to investigate a story. Maybe it's for fesicious reasons, but, they are making the so called real journalist look like asses

Didn't they have a Michelle Jealous of Obama's Women!!!! story - only to reveal that she was sick of working - years ago - while he gave speeches, or something completely irrelevant like that? It was one of those 'END OF THE WORLD' headlines, which reveal... "End of the World Book #5 edition - make way for #6!"

They're silly - but with these 2 stories, as well as a few in the past which I didn't notice - they're getting my attention & grudging, uncomfortable respect.

I may be wrong, but I still believe the four mos old is the daughter's baby. The whole story is bizzare.

Best case scenario: She used horrible judgment when she decided to take a long flight to Alaska after her water broke, endangering her own life and the life of her special needs child.

Worst case scenario: She is actually the grandmother of the baby.

As many other posters have said, why not just produce a valid birth certificate, or an affadavit from the attending physician(s) and/or nurse(s). Or Bristol's medical records proving diagnosis and treatment of mono.

Once the tabloids start throwing big money around, the truth is sure to come out. Just ask John Edwards

Why oh why tell the world that her water broke? None of it makes any sense. Unless it is a pack of lies, that would make sense.

Anyone who has had a baby will laugh at that whole 'she wanted an Alaskan baby'. Once your waters break you know you need to be in the labour ward or birthing pool no three ways about it. Are full term women allowed to fly in America?

I agree, why did she keep her "pregnancy" a secret for nearly 7 months? That's just strange.

To be fair, as an older mother, she might have been afraid of miscarrying. It's painful to lose a baby, & it would be awful to have to get sympathy from your entire state in a private matter.

Just a thought, but I for one don't believe that mother/grandmother story about the Downs baby. I think there's enough fuel & folly for the rest, though.

Oh, & also, you learn fairly early in pregnancy that your child has Downs - and I believe there's a higher risk of miscarriage or stillborn babies there. That would also explain it.

This is better than a soap opera.

This is a distortion. This all originally began not with the rumors that have been circulatng among REPUBLICAN legislators in the Alska Assembly the last four months, but with a blogger who was a nurse and who thought that something about the birth of the Down's Sybnrome baby smelled to high heaven.

The Enquirer only got on it after Daily Kos picked it up and they only paid attention to it because more bloggers were writing about it. The MSM didn't delve into it until the McCain campaign made the announcement about Bristol's pregnancy.

So the Enquirer and the MSM can suck it.

sniff sniff *thinks she should pass the tissue to Robin*. It was fun when people where pulling stuff out of their a r s e s about BO and now thr real truth comes out and you are all up in arms. If you know anything about birthing a child then you would know her story is B O G U SSSSSS!

Lol....when it was Johnny boy Edwards in the NE it was a rag and a total lie, according to the outraged libbys. But now....... its a journalistic masterpiece.

So then you buy into the Enquirer's stories of how Bush is back on the hard booze and has been sleeping with Condoleeza Rice, the George W.-Laura union hanging by an increasingly fraying thread? Alrighty then.

It's easy to get those stories confused with other tabloids. However, I suspect if you read 'Bush cheatin' with Condi,' the real story would be that he spends more hours with Rice than his wife, etc. No fornication involved. They play with stuff in that juvenile way, but I suspect they're very careful, having been sued before.

Wasn't it shown their stories are actually more factual than other press? They dally on the line, but don't really go over.

I say this, having not yet READ the Enq - though I may yet - but that is what I've heard about this subject.

Me, too, btw. I was once an Edwards supporter - before Obama entered the scene. I didn't want to believe that story at ALL, because it's very depressing, & I like Edwards' wife.

But I was open-minded enough to listen to the evidence, & felt sure it was true well before he admitted it. And I thought he was potting soil, & basically, deserved the mud flung his way.

Yahooo! The NE will pay for information. That has to trump Sarah's threats. No one in the Mat-Su Valley will let cash slip through their hands. But they may not speak until the PFDs and the Energy Rebates are safely deposited into their bank accounts! The $1200 to every man, woman and child she recently authorized, was just another way to keep us all silent on the rumors. BTW, is it a Republican Value to tax Big Oil and then redistribute the wealth? I told Congress, I told Congress, blah blah blah.

I picture a bidding war for some innocent Alaskan's story, between Cindy's People & the Enquirer's reporters with their wads of cash. Still, I assume it's vastly unethical & illegal for Cindy to pay for anything here.

Now this makes sense. I never brought the story that Palin's announcment came to quelle internet rumors that Trig was Bristol's and not Sarah's. It just didn't make sense. All she had to do was look in the camera, smile, say how silly the rumor was and move on. There was no reason for her to drop a bombshell like this except that she knew the story would break soon. This is the same reason why Governor Patterson of NY spilled he and his wife's business about their extra martial affairs. The media was about to break the story. This is sad. Palin put herself before her family. Poor Bristol. No teenager wants her business put out in the street like that. The Palin's should be ashamed of themselves.

I really hate to say this... I mean I REALLY hate to say this, but I'm actually quite glad that National Enquirer is investigating this story. However, it's not because I WANT them to find anything negative. I just want there to be a real investigation into the facts of the story to end all of the speculation, one way or the other. Of course, it's a double-edged sword... NE will undoubtedly spin a story even if none exists. Oh well...

Not really, but I can understand why you would say that. It is a juicy story if you can detach from the people involved... I can't. I'd much prefer that Trig's life not be played with. I've seen this done before to people, and the end result is not pretty when the truth is learned later in life. I'm much more interested in a definitive resolution to this so that no one has the question hanging over their heads.
