Rocket Science

As the GOP struggles to maintain some vestige of the "experience" argument in the wake of Sarah Palin being named as John McCain's running mate, much has been made of Palin's executive experience as Governor of Alaska and Mayor of the town of Wasilla. Of course, if all executive jobs are equal to each other and greater than all non-executive government jobs, Palin has more experience than everyone else on both tickets. That John McCain, Palin's "executive" inferior, remains at the top of the ticket is sufficient to pooh-pooh that whole line of reasoning.

But, as it happens, Laura McGann of the Washington Independent has gone out to Alaska, to do the sort of vetting work that one would have thought the McCain campaign might have done. (One would have been wrong, of course.) And, as it turns out, not even Sarah Palin thinks all that much of her executive experience. Here's McGann, digging through the archives at the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman:

I'm reading an article from October, 1996, in which a reporter named Laura Mitchell Harris asks Palin about her intentions for a shake up. How would she effectively run a city without experienced leaders? "It's not rocket science," Palin said, "It's $6 million and 53 employees."

The state government of Alaska only has 53 employees? They are worse off than I thought.

Wasilla. One s two ll. just to keep things straight. It's a weird city. Dirt roads and box stores. There are actually quite a few really nice homes there. As property in Anchorage became expensive a lot of people moved out there and commute. It's been pretty tough lately though since gas is still over $4 gallon and almost everyone out there drives a huge truck.

5 mil and 53 employees is less money and employees than it takes to maintain Johnny Mac's 7 houses. At least Cindy knows she has the superior household executive experience and can't be so easily replaced.

As head of his campaign organization, Barack Obama's total budget is $100 million. There are more than 53 employees at the Democratic National Committee offices in D.C.-an organization that Barack Obama also leads. Howard Dean is Chairman. Barack Obama is CEO. Guess what? Obama wins on experience hands down! Oh-as for 'entrepreneurship'? Obama BUILT this organization from the GROUND up-not from the top down and it is admittedly the most well run political campaign in HISTORY. I will now concede Alaska and Arizona to the Repubs-but this still looks like an electoral AND popular sweep!

Actually, Cindy has some executive experience running her dad's company... I bet she's better than John-boy too.

The republican party twist and turns with every poll and every circumstance. They'd pounce on anyone else with this kind of resume. It would be Palin 24x7 on Fox.

Watching Joe Lieberman at the Republican convention I'm thinking that he's gotta worry about his spot in the Democrats caucus. Hey Joe, "its not rocket science". :)

Hmmm ... maybe if McCain had been less concerned about keeping a secret and more concerned about our nation this would have come out in their vetting process, guess not!

Wow!! Sarah Palin's "executive experience" means managing less people and a smaller budget than many mid-level executives. In my last company, there at least 50 people who managed more people and spent more dough than she did.

They have more experience than McCain and can now be President too! It's a fun, non-rockety scientisty (science isn't real anyways!) type job!
