Palin's Church May Have Shaped Controversial Worldview

UPDATE: Read the Palin Big News Page

Three months before she was thrust into the national political spotlight, Gov. Sarah Palin was asked to handle a much smaller task: addressing the graduating class of commission students at her one-time church, Wasilla Assembly of God.

Her speech in June provides as much insight into her policy leanings as anything uncovered since she was asked to be John McCain's running mate.

Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Religion, however, was not strictly a thread in Palin's foreign policy. It was part of her energy proposals as well. Just prior to discussing Iraq, Alaska's governor asked the audience to pray for another matter -- a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state. "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

Video of Kalnins and Palin from June 8, 2008 (via wasillaag.net):

Palin's address, much of which was spent reflecting on the work of the church in which she grew up and was baptized, underscores the notion that her world view is deeply impacted by religion. In turn, her remarks raise important questions: mainly, what is Palin's faith and how exactly has it influenced her policies?

A review of recorded sermons by Ed Kalnins, the senior pastor of Wasilla Assembly of God since 1999, offers a provocative and, for some, eyebrow-raising sketch of Palin's longtime spiritual home.

The church runs a number of ministries providing help to poor neighborhoods, care for children in need, and general community services. But Pastor Kalnins has also preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war "contending for your faith;" and said that Jesus "operated from that position of war mode."

It is impossible to determine how much Wasilla Assembly of God has shaped Palin's thinking. She was baptized there at the age of 12 and attended the church for most of her adult life. When Palin was inaugurated as governor, the founding pastor of the church delivered the invocation. In 2002, Palin moved her family to a nondenominational church, but she continues to worship at a related Assembly of God church in Juneau.

Moreover, she "has maintained a friendship with Wasilla Assembly of God and has attended various conferences and special meetings here," Kalnins' office said in a statement. "As for her personal beliefs," the statement added, "Governor Palin is well able to speak for herself on those issues."

Clearly, however, Palin views the church as the source of an important, if sometimes politically explosive, message. "Having grown up here, and having little kids grow up here also, this is such a special, special place," she told the congregation in June. "What comes from this church I think has great destiny."

And if the political storm over Barack Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright is any indication, Palin may face some political fallout over the more controversial teachings of Wasilla Assembly of God.

If the church had a political alignment, it would almost surely be conservative. In his sermons, Kalnins did not hide his affections for certain national politicians.

During the 2004 election season, he praised President Bush's performance during a debate with Sen. John Kerry, then offered a not-so-subtle message about his personal candidate preferences. "I'm not going tell you who to vote for, but if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I'm sorry." Kalnins added: "If every Christian will vote righteously, it would be a landslide every time."

Months after hinting at possible damnation for Kerry supporters, Kalnins bristled at the treatment President Bush was receiving over the federal government's handling of Hurricane Katrina. "I hate criticisms towards the President," he said, "because it's like criticisms towards the pastor -- it's almost like, it's not going to get you anywhere, you know, except for hell. That's what it'll get you."

Much of his support for the current administration has come in the realm of foreign affairs. Kalnins has preached that the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq were part of a "world war" over the Christian faith, one in which Jesus Christ had called upon believers to be willing to sacrifice their lives.

What you see in a terrorist -- that's called the invisible enemy. There has always been an invisible enemy. What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what's going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. ... We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. ... Jesus called us to die. You're worried about getting hurt? He's called us to die. Listen, you know we can't even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. ... I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say "war mode." Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he's like the good shepherd, he's loving all the time and he's kind all the time. Oh yes he is -- but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war.

As for his former congregant and current vice presidential candidate, Kalnins has asserted that Palin's election as governor was the result of a "prophetic call" by another pastor at the church who prayed for her victory. "[He made] a prophetic declaration and then unfolds the kingdom of God, you know."

Even Palin expressed surprise at that pastor's advocacy for her candidacy. "He was praying over me," she said in June. "He's praying, 'Lord make a way, Lord make a way...' And I'm thinking, this guy's really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm gonna do, he doesn't know what my plans are, and he's praying not, 'Oh Lord, if it be your will may she become governor,' or whatever. No, he just prayed for it. He said, 'Lord, make a way, and let her do this next step.' And that's exactly what happened. So, again, very very powerful coming from this church."

In his sermons, Pastor Kalnins has also expressed beliefs that, while not directly political, lie outside of mainstream Christian thought.

He preaches repeatedly about the "end times" or "last days," an apocalyptic prophesy held by a small but vocal group of Christian leaders. During his appearance with Palin in June, he declared, "I believe Alaska is one of the refuge states in the last days, and hundreds of thousands of people are going to come to the state to seek refuge and the church has to be ready to minister to them."

He also claims to have received direct "words of knowledge" from God, providing him information about past events in other people's lives. During one sermon, he described being paired with a complete stranger during a golf outing. "I said, I'm a minister from Alaska and I want you to know that your wife left you -- you know that your wife left you and that the Lord is gonna defend you in a very short time, and it wasn't your fault. And the man drops his clubs, he literally was about to tee off and he dropped his clubs, and he says, 'Who the blank are you?' And I says, 'well, I'm a minister.' He says, 'how do you know about my life? What do you know?' And I started giving him more of the word of knowledge to his life and he was freaked out."

Kalnins has, of course, preached on a bevy of topics ranging from humility to "overcoming bitterness." But the more controversial remarks reported above were not out of the norm, appearing in numerous sermons spanning the four years of available recordings.

As for Palin, her views on these topics is more opaque. In the wake of the controversy over Jeremiah Wright, a debate has raged about whether political figures should be held responsible for the comments of their religious guiders. Clearly, however, Kalnins, like many national conservative religious leaders, sees Alaska's governor as one of his own. "Gov. Sarah Palin is the real deal," he told his church this past summer. "You know, some people put on a show...but she's the real deal."

Wait... let me get this straight:
1) The fact that someone's church may have influenced their worldview is weird? It's news?
2) The church that we're talking about, and most of the quotes in the article and whatnot, are from a church that Palin doesn't go to?

How is this news?

It'd be like me writing a story that says you "may" be a serial killer and finding a random person who may or may not know you and having them spout off about serial killing and mention your name once, too. If I wrote that article up just right, it'd have the same format as this one. Think about it.

What's up with Palin and Thomas Muthee and Joel's Army and others who preach Armageddon?

I found these on the web:

Obama: "My faith teaches me that I can sit in church and pray all I want, but I won’t be fulfilling God’s will unless I go out and do the Lord’s work."

Obama prayer to God: "Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of your will."

Obama: "I'll establish a new Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. The new name will reflect a new commitment. This Council will not just be another name on the White House organization chart - it will be a critical part of my administration."

McCain, Palin and their clean-up staff have resorted to new levels of deceptive fantasy. They must think everyone watching the Republican candidates' interviews is very stupid. Palin and McCain claim that the line about the war in Iraq being "a task that is from God" is actually a "repeat" of a Lincoln quote.

Palin skirts around a direct assertion that the war is a mission from God - although she states "there is a plan and that plan is God's plan". This is miles away from the sentiment attributed to Lincoln - that we should hope to be on God's side, whatever it may be. Rather, it is saying either that God is on our side - we're doing his task - or that we should wish he is. Palin combines the war with the notion of God's work in an alarming way, with none of Lincoln's measured, equivocal tone:

"In great contests each party claims to act in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, and one must be, wrong."

Are we seriously expected to believe Lincoln was on Palin's mind when she made this speech? She doesn't mention him at the church service. Would she share some other "quotations" with the congregation?

"My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation and the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them."

Hey it is now just like it was 200 years ago here in the Promised Land, and just like 2000 years ago in the Middle East. Lets get those facts straight! If we don't. we will be led out on tangent after tangent like abortions and stem cell stuff. Lets focus on things that will help Families raise the kid they want. That will fulfill the Family Values I car about.

see ya,

If you are curious, intrigued, confused, or outraged about Sarah Palin's comments invoking God's role in the Iraq war, you may want to watch Constantine's Sword (www.constantinessword.com). The film shows what happens when military power and religious fervor are joined.

Wow, I've never seen the AOG so demonized! Most of the AOG people I know take the Bible seriously, give to charities, pay their taxes, support programs for young people including Teen Challenge which is one of the most successful drug rehab programs out there. They preach the golden rule and actually preach all of the ten commandments. Palin, although she no longer attends an Assembly of God, no doubt adheres to much of this philosophy. Doesn't sound very scary to me.

The AoG specifically and the Christian faith in general being targeted shouldn't be too surprising It Has been said, and shown, there are quite a few who feel Christians is the last group who is "open season".

One has to wonder what would have happened if the same people would have attacked a law-abiding Orthodox Jew, Muslim, or Buddhist who just happened to be running for office?

Those who attack a candidate based on her Christian faith or the fact she is Christian probably doesn't know -what else- to attack her own.

I can see her now:

It's three o'clock in the morning and the red telephone rings. It's Putin on the phone, telling her that nuclear warheads have been accidently launched towards U.S. cities from Russian submarines.

Palin, now president of the U.S. for twelve months, following McCain's death, prays a short prayer to Jesus. She is sure Jesus is in war-mode and ready, at this moment, tp return to save his faithful believers from nuclear incineration in the rapture, something that Palin's pastor and other right-wing conservative religious leaders have been promising believers for years.

Over the past few months, thousands of fellow Christians have been heading to Alaska, trusting with all their hearts that the area around Wasilla will be their last refuge before the return of their Lord Jesus Christ.

Quickly, Palin heads for the Ready Room, a large bunker that is built deeply beneath the White House. There she meets with a hastily assembled military command.

After a few minutes of discussion, President Palin takes a deep breath. She then inserts the secret codes that will launch America's nuclear missiles to predetermined targets in the former Soviet Union.

Those sitting around her can hear her saying with some confidence, "Come, Lord Jesus! Your will be done! Amen."

One can pray only that America has a vision and prevents another period of reublican rule that features religious zealots and war-mongering. Pray for the troops and for leaders that send them out on tasks given from God? Which God is this? The same the poor Iraqi is praying too? Or Bin Laden? Don't they pray too to defeat the U.S. ? Church and State should not be mixed, the principles of the Republicans are wrong, they have to learn that the God they always carry on their lips (if there is one) teaches that he is love and not a particular American one. If Republican had taken the opportunity to regain trust, make friends, concentrate on building up America, look after each other than this world would have been a better place. Republican Rule for the last eight years has instead brought: Outrageous spending, Unlawful processes by Government, Lies and Fraud, War and Instability, No Health Insurance for Americans, No Vision for the future. America wake up: An very old McCain will sleep most of the day on his desk and America is ruled by a Religious Crazy? We need a Real Change for the Better!

jemiltd, from the sermon...

Zeph 1-3 (ref)

(Pastor Kroon:) '...what Zephaniah says—‘Listen, He is going to remove everyone from the earth. He is gonna deal with all the inhabitants; so, as a result, understand He is going to deal with you, Jerusalem and Judah. There’s no exceptions here.’ And if Zephaniah were here today he’d be saying, ‘Listen, He is gonna deal with all the inhabitants of the earth. He is gonna strike out His hand against, yes, Wasilla; and Alaska; and the United States of America. There’s no exceptions here—there’s none.’

(Pastor Kroon:) '—why would God do such a thing? And the answer Zephaniah gives, in one word at one point, is very simply...sin, mankind’s rebellions against God.

Yet...

(Pastor Kroon:) 'There’s anger with God. He takes sin personal. But there is something that answers to that anger, and that’s His love. And it’s a love that, we’re told, not only does He love the world—“He loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son.” He put His Son there and said, ‘You take the anger for them.’ And with that promise is “Whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” No ‘perhaps’ there. It’s simply sayin’ “I’m gonna seek the Lord, starting with Jesus, responding with faith.’ That’s what you do, given the reality of the day of the Lord.'

Didn't you read it all?

Michah38: Right wing religious groups and AlQueda have something in common - their religious extremism is SCAREY and dangerous!'

So are Liberal Left religious groups and Socialists. If one wants a true discussion, it would do well to stay away from the name-calling and stay focused on the issues.

deminmo: I don't recall Jesus extorting his disciples to wage unending wars. History is full of humans who chose to do that, and to commit horrible acts in the name of God, but for God or Jesus to direct that seems a little wacky.

Jesus once told his opponents, "Give to Cesar what belongs to Cesar and give to God what belongs to God" when they tried to entrap Him. Also to note, the Bible does state God does give governments the power to rule. People are in power because He allows them to be. Yet there are still absolute rights and wrongs He has in place. God expects people to follow them. Because of sinful nature we're rebellious against Him. That doesn't lessen the expectation any.

People are still accountable for their own actions. Don't blame God when human authorities become corrupt, mistreat and abuse citizens, whether they be of their own country or another. And what about countries like ours where people vote for their authorities into office and -- don't -- hold them into account.

She is a piece of work. Scary thing is this a amageddon mentality is about death. The rapture, which she believes in is the same. She and others will float up to Jesus and the rest of us will burn in hell. One radio guy, Father Camping set the date as May 21 20011. Don't worry though, Christians have set the date millions of times. One write back in around 100AD didn't write certain things as he "knew" the world would end soon. Talk about a death wish. All the wierd death cults are Christain. Won't find any Hindus or Buddhists, just Christians. David Koresh and Waco - big time evangelical. Jim Jones of Jonestown - Christain Minister (same church as Ronald Regan), Heavens Gate murders - Christian leader thought that Jesus was hovering behind comet Hale Bopp.

Loons the lot of them. Please don't let them near war of nuke buttons. They will kill anyone and anything to prove they are right. Scary.

mnnngj , YOU ARE CONFUSED ABOUT THE CHRISTIAN FAITH. JUST BECAUSE THEY SAY THEY ARE CHRISTIANS-CULT LEADERS THEIR NOT. YOU WOULD HAVE READ THE BIBLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT A TRUE CHRISTIAN IS . JIM JONES WAS DECEIVING HIS PEOPLE AND THEY PAID THE PRICE FOR NOT READING THEIR BIBLES. WHEN JESUS COMES HE DOESNT NEED OUR HELP. WHEN PALINS PASTOR TALKS ABOUT WAR HE IS TALKING ABOUT A SPIRIT WAR OF GOOD AN EVIL THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HOLY WAR. WHEN MEN FIGHT IN GODS NAME THEY ARE LYING BECAUSE GOD CAN FIGHT HIS OWN BATTLES.

Hey, Sarah Palin has been called by God. We need some Christian leaders that will go by the 10 commandends, try to ban all this evil thats going on in the world like abortions, gay marriages, going by the word of God is the most important values that we could use in this country. Oh yes there is going to be a rapture. I'm a pentacostal christian like Sarah. I'm telling you that we are living in the last days, there has been 500 Biblical Prophecies fulfilled, It is prophesed that The Second coming of Christ is very near. Old Testament and New Testament prophecy is fortold. That Jim Jones was a freak he was running a cult, theres a difference. All these other new age religions that speak of their Gods are demon spirits. Jesus Ghrist is the Son of the Living God. We have the Bible to back us up. We have Historical and early church letters and scrolls that date as far back as the beginning of creation. These things will clue to the end of the world international wars, revolutions, famines, multiple earthquakes, hurricanes, epidemics, strange natural disasters, unpredictable oceanic events, persecutions of christians rampant immorality, worldwide dissemination of the message of Jesus you can go to Mattrew 24:1-22,Mark 13:3-23,and Luke 21:5-28. Unless you repent from your sins and accept Jesus Christ into your heart as your Lord and savior you will go to hell. He has given you a free gift to go to heaven and spent eternal life with him.

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right."

" Also, [pray] ....that our leaders.... are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,"

"....make sure that we're praying ....that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Palin is simply saying, 'pray that the US plan is the 'right thing', i.e., God's will'. Is this really that hard to understand? Unlike Islam, Christ didn't explicitly direct his followers to fight and kill other religions or other nations, so Christians would naturally have doubts about the the Big Guy's views on war, post-Christ. Hence the need to pray.
