Cindy

In a one-one-one interview with CBS' Katie Couric, Cindy McCain says she disagrees with Sarah Palin on abortion:

COURIC: Some, even Republicans seem surprised that Senator McCain picked a running mate who opposes abortion even in-- in the cases of rape and incest and believes creationism should be taught in schools. And I'm just curious, do you believe--or do you agree with that?

MCCAIN: What I agree with is the fact that she is a social conservative, she is a reform minded woman, she is someone that will shake the-- the-- Washington up, which is exactly what we wanna do. We differ on many issues, we differ with-- across the board with people. We don't have to agree on every issue.

COURIC: Abortion has suddenly become, again, a hot button issue, because of her--

MCCAIN: I think to you all it has--

COURIC: Well, I think probably, at least, it's reported that a lot of people are now talking about this. And I-- where do you stand on abortion?

MCCAIN: I'm pro-life, I'm on the record as being pro-life, like my husband.

COURIC: So, do you oppose it even in the cases of rape and incest?

MCCAIN: No.

COURIC: No? So, that's where you two differ--

MCCAIN: Uh-huh (AFFIRM).

Reform minded my A$$.
Palin is in the pocket of the Oil Companies as are all of Alaska's politicians.
Corruption is more what she has in mind.
Did Veco contribute to her Mayoral and Governor's race?
Yes it did.
Now, let us find what favors she did for them.

Hey McCain - way to make abortion THE MAIN ISSUE this election. Thats a good thing since the majority of American voters are pro-choice and very few are as hardline extremist as Palin. Even pro-life people are like 'Palin is extreme!'

ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!????? Why is ABORTION an issue when the US has so many economic, international, and political problems? WTF? What does abortion have to do with running a nation of 300 million people, $500 billion army, massive current accounts deficits, record bank failures, and two ongoing wars (which may expand to a third)? No wonder IDIOTS get elected time and time again.

Lack of access to womens' health services severely affects the economic status of the women involved, particularly if they are essentially being forced to have children they neither want nor can afford.

Furthermore, the policies which would disproportionately force poor women to have children they neither want nor can afford are particularly disturbing when coming from a party that wages two ongoing wars at the cost of 3 trillion dollars (which may expand to a third).

It looks like they're trying to breed cannon fodder, and it stinks to high heaven.

Well said wagadog. I love reading postings that point out way these issue cross over have economic and national security impact. It just highlights way you need a president that has a thoughtful mind, curiosity, intellect, advanced education and an ability to communicate.

WHO CARES? Abortion is HERE TO STAY AS MANDATED BY ROE VS. WADE - IT WILL NEVER CHANGE, like the second amendment. Just accept it and lets TALK about the REAL ISSUES. Women are NEVER forced to have children (except in Muslim cultures). If women can't afford an abortion surely they can afford birth control and/or condoms or other contraceptive devices.

Forcing women to have children they do not want will create many additional economic and social problems.

SO?

The whole abortion is old and stale, but it would be de-evolutionary to our government if Roe v. Wade ever gets overturned. There would be just as many abortions, but they wouldn't be performed by professionals, and they wouldn't be safe.

It seems that on here most of the pro-lifers aren't totally pro-life; meaning that of course it's okay if certain medical conditions are met.

I'm pro-choice; meaning that I don't want to encourage abortion, but if certain conditions exist the woman should have the right to choose whether or not to abort.

I think the major difference comes in sex-ed. I'd rather teach our children how to avoid unwanted pregnancy in the first place - not abstinance-only sex-ed. Abstinance only sex-ed? How naive!

Hmmm... they both sound the exact same to me...

Wow. She is not against abortion in cases of rape and incest? She's not a robot? I had no idea.

Just a general life alert: if you ever meet a woman who opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest, you should run, very fast and very far away from her. Having said that, I would still run very fast and very far away from Cindy McCain.

From beket's diary at dKos:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/2/19149/83971/956/583837

As an abortion provider (MD) I performed an early first trimester abortion on a college senior some years ago. She had been seen a number of times among protestors at my clinic, and prior to her procedure she had told a clinic counselor that she was the president of her campus "pro-life" organization. Think about that. That must mean that she was one of their most committed and hardest agitators against legal and safe professional abortion care for several years, but when she got pregnant herself, she was in the clinic having an abortion within a week of her positive pregnancy test.

After I completed her abortion, I matter-of-factly asked her what she was now going to do about her affiliation with that anti-choice club. Startled, she gasped, sat abruptly upright on the operating table, and with horrified expression blurted out in a tremulous voice, . . .

You'll have to click over to the diary to find out what she said.

And a GREAT diary it is, too. rec it up.

If you've ever met a person who is the product of incest or rape, I'd love to overhear the conversation where you tell them they should have been killed in the womb.

If you really believe that a fetus is a human being in a meaningful sense from the point of conception then it follows that you cannot make exceptions for rape and incest because that is not the fetus' fault and taking the life of the fetus must be murder. This follows logically from the position that the fetus is a human being from the point of conception. This postion cannot allow for exceptions for rape and incest. In order to justify abortions for rape and incest, you must deny that a fetus, up to some stage of development, is a human being in a meaningful sense. But in that case forbidding abortions for other reasons up to that stage of development is an intolerable interference by the government with a woman's right to control her own body.

These people aren't really trying to save fetuses. They're trying to punish women for their moral choices-- that's why they're okay with abortion if someone is raped.

If a test were developed that would confirm that a fetus was likely to be homosexual, we would end this moronic debate tomorrow. Evangelicals would trip over themselves to get to the clinic.

Evangelicals believe sexuality is a choice, not a genetic trait. of course, they would like to take that supposed choice away, too.

Shame the polarization on abortion. One party is never under any circumstances; the other is no restrictions or rules ever, while the public is somewhere between.

You are wrong about the Democrats. We want to keep abortion legal for when it is necessary, but we want to reduce the need for abortions with sex education and family planning. If you have been following the news, the Republicans are now going after contraception as well.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:44 PM on 09/03/2008

Unfortunately, Democrats are against rules and restrictions on third term abortions. Yes, they have all sorts of rationalizations, but bottom line Democrats are against all rules, regulations and restrictions on third term abortions which require any sort of proof for exceptions. Infanticide is inexcusable.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:15 PM on 09/03/2008

Most pro-choice people support restrictions in the third trimester.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:46 PM on 09/03/2008

Yes, but one party actually supports the methods that actually work to reduce unwanted pregnancies. While the one that is against abortion is also against methods that reduce unwanted pregnancies and push an agenda that has been proven not to work.

There is no reliable data which correlates government sex education and or the free availability of birth control to decreasing illegitimacy rates.
