Dems May Punish Lieberman For RNC Speech

Sen. Joe Lieberman's speech Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention may have been the last straw for his fellow Senate Democrats.

The longtime Democrat-turned-Independent senator, who still caucuses with Democrats and chairs the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, may soon see one or both of those privileges revoked, said a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

Lieberman gave a primetime speech Tuesday that repeatedly criticized Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.). Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate, is a top supporter of Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Lieberman knows he has burned his Democratic bridges and is auditioning for McCain's Secretary of Defense, but it ain't gonna happen. Lieberman's VP plans never materialized just as McCain's presidency won't either. This guy is toast, and his days are numbered.

If they booted him now, the Dems would lose the majority, and thus Harry R would lose his position as Majority Leader if Liebercon started caucusing with the Rethugs. Granted, it would only be until after the election, but I'd prefer not to think what would happen in just 2 months of Rethug control back in the Senate
