WASILLA, Alaska — The boyfriend of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's unwed, pregnant daughter will join the family of the Republican vice presidential candidate at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Levi Johnston's mother said her 18-year-old son left Alaska on Tuesday morning to join the Palin family at the convention where Sen. John McCain will officially receive the Republican nomination for president. The boy's mother, Sherry Johnston, said there had been no pressure put on her son to marry 17-year-old Bristol Palin and the two teens had made plans to wed before it was known she was pregnant.

"This is just a bonus," Johnston said.

The young man's presence could set off a media frenzy around the young couple as photographers and cameramen scramble for pictures of the two teenagers. On Monday, Palin and her husband, Todd, said their 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, planned to have the baby and wed a young man identified only as Levi. The family asked the media to respect the young couple's privacy as has been the tradition with children of candidates.

Sarah Palin is scheduled to address the convention Wednesday night and traditionally her family would join her at the conclusion of her speech.

Sherry Johnston said she was worried about her son dealing with all the attention. She said it was difficult enough for teenagers to deal with any pregnancy, having the entire nation watching made it worse.

Levi Johnston, a high school hockey player for Wasilla High School, is not listed on the team roster for 2008-2009, and his mother wouldn't say if he graduated. She said simply he's no longer a student and any further information would have to come from him.

The intense media scrutiny has stunned this suburban community about 40 miles north of Anchorage, with reporters camping out near the Johnston home.

"This is out of my league," Sherry Johnston said. "I'm just a country gal and I want to keep it that way."

She spoke Tuesday while standing in the driveway leading to her pale gray, two-story home situated on a densely wooded country lane. The home, like many in Alaska is adorned with moose and caribou antlers outside.

Many social conservatives have rallied behind Gov. Palin and her family's troubles. The McCain campaign has said the Palins are like any other American family and that "life happens."

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said that Palin's family and her daughter's pregnancy were not relevant to her potential performance as vice president. "I think people's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics."

Just days after she was picked as McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin has become a lightning rod for attention. Aside from her daughter's pregnancy, it was disclosed that a private attorney has been retained for her in a legislative ethics investigation for her dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner. It also was disclosed that Palin's husband had been arrested on a drunken-driving charge two decades ago.

(This version CORRECTS SUBS last graf to correct spelling of lightning.)

This entire debate about the Pallin family is such a distraction to the real issues in America. I can't believe that their is a war going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, there is a housing crisis in the US, the world "view" of America has deteriorated during the last 8 years, and we are having a conversation about the Pallin family. Oh my goodness. When a potential VP is on the cover of entertainment magazines instead of the Sunday news shows, there is clearly a problem in America. Imagine if you will, were she to become VP. I realize this is entertainment, but come on people of America. You have an opportunity this year to fix the problems that Bush and Cheney created. Let's not lose sight of the challenges. Obama for President. PLEASE!!!!
Love your country, from Canada.

I AM SORRY, BUT, WHEN YOU HAVE CHILDREN
YOUR LIFE IS NOT ABOUT YOU ANYMORE!!!!!

RIGHT NOW, IT IS SARAH'S JOB TO PROTECT HER CHILDREN
NOT OURS

IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THEM-THEN DON'T HAVE THEM
AND DON'T TALK ABOUT FAMILY VALUES BECAUSE THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY
WRONG WITH YOURS, MISS SOCCER MOM!!

Sarah Pallin is the candidate, not these kids. As an adult woman she has made some bizarre choices of her of her own, many of which call her judgement into question.

First of all, what pregnant woman in her right mind gets on a plane and flies from Dallas to Anchorage, via Seatle, AFTER their water has broken? Who would risk the life of a baby they claim they want when they know they are having a child with medical complications and their age makes the child's birth very high risk? The fact that she didn't seek immediate care during this time tells me that a) she didn't care whether or not the baby lived or b) she didn't mind putting her life own life in grave danger. This behavior exemplifies utter stupidity and recklessness.

Secondly, she should make all communication regarding her "troopergate" ethics violation public. This rat stinks.

I would like to like Sarah Pallin but she comes across as a right-wing fundamentalist kook to me. I'm glad she gave a good speech. Now let her face the press and the public and answer some of the tough questions before a less than adoring crowd.

Hey! She's had four children and knows her own body! I don't think she would carry a child that far and put the baby or herself at danger. It took 12 hours for my child to be born after my water broke I took out the trash, showered, repacked my bag, made the bed, made some calls, etc......it shows she has control during a critical situation.

The only advice I can offer to young Ms. Palin and her fella is, "Don't let momma pick the baby's name".

I realize that Sarah Pallin advocating abstinence, does not mean that her teenage daughter will practice what her mom preaches. Of course her family should provide her support and love. What I do think is tragic is that somewhere along the way, a decision was made for two teenages to get married. Come on. What kind of a future is this girl going to have? Does she want an education? Does she have dreams like and goals like her Mom had? Will she be able to accomplish them when the tv cameras and media scrutiny are over and its just her, the redneck boyfriend and the baby. Child rearing and marriage is not easy anymore. Certainly not for a 17 year old. That is the tragedy in my opinion.

These are things I read in a missive from someone who lives in Wasilla and who knows Sarah Palin. As mayor of Wasilla which lacked a sewer treatment plant - she spent money for a sports complex. She inherited a city with a surplus of funds and left it in debt. She had a City Administrator that handled all the big decisions.. She hired cronies. She spent a lot of time trying to get people to fire her ex brother in law. She tried to get the City Librarian fired because they would not remove some books that Sara wanted removed......She is for shooting wolves and bears for the air and even put a bounty on the wolves.....She has a pattern of hiring and firing people who don't do what she wants.
Just how does this equate with being experienced? How is this different from any thing that we have now? She was for that bridge before she was against it. She kept the money for it. She was for Ted Stevens before she was against him......
What does this say to you? Moral Values?????

My first comment here.
In principal i agree with Obama: the details of the "children's situation" is a private matter of their family. They need to deal with it in their own way.
However, there is one aspect of this that i have not seen commented on yet: Does it say something about a family, who claims to be strictly conservative (abstain rather than prevent, against pro choice, etc.), but is not able to raise their children in a "conservative" fashion?

"her families troubles" Having a baby with your boyfriend is troubles? He's involved and they are a couple, but that's"troubles"?

Could every body shut up about this pending baby and it's mom and dad and get back to the issues.

Palin is just not the vice president for me. She has bullied her way through her time in politics in Alaska and I still think Obama is the better choice for president.

Issues. Not gossip and trouble mongering.
Please.

As Obama said he would love to.
For some reason McCain thought this circus was good for his chances

What did they expect when you name someone your VP and then in the next moment, when all the cameras are trained on her, she announces her daughters tabloidish pregnancy? When they put her out as the "hockey (this isn't canada) mom" candidate, and symbol for all women upset about hillary

And the one I found the most disgusting:
How she paraded her infant child with down syndrome out as an anti-abortion prop and proclaimed that she never even thought about aborting the baby in her arms.

No one cares about her children's choices, its her choices we question

Wow, so Palin, who is against teenage sex and teen pregnancy is celebrating her daughter's pregnancy by having her and her loud-mouthed boyfriend on stage with her at the convention.

Can you imagine what the right would be saying if Obama had a 17 year old daughter who got knocked up by a loud-mouthed black boyfriend and Obama took them out on stage at the Democratic convention?

The religious right would have a fit.

The attacks on Palin are going to backfire badly on the left. Stop doing it if you want Obama to win. You don't want to rile up folks from Latrobe, PA...Youngstown, Ohio....small towns in Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Alabama, Georgia etc etc You are motivating them to hate the Obama campaign and the liberal democrats. Obama isnt exactly running away with this election.

Exactly why will the people in those small towns hate Obama because we are questioning Palin's qualifications for being VP? You don't think the right would be doing the same thing if Obama has picked someone as unqualified as Sarah Palin is. I'm sorry, but I give the people in those towns you mention a lot more credit.

You, on the other hand, I give no credit.

You may have ended up on the wrong page. This article concerns attacks based on her children, not (perfectly reasonable) questions on her record/qualifications for vp.

I guess kids grow up far faster in Alaska than in the Midwest, so
two kids getting married and starting a family is just normal.
Will they live with his folks or in Washington, if Mom-in-Law gets
VP? Will Levi work or will Bristol? Beyond getting married and
welcoming their baby, what life goals do they have?
Boy, these days are hard for older married, or single folks with or
without kids, I really wish the best for these two kids.
