WASILLA, Alaska — The boyfriend of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's unwed, pregnant daughter will join the family of the Republican vice presidential candidate at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Levi Johnston's mother said her 18-year-old son left Alaska on Tuesday morning to join the Palin family at the convention where Sen. John McCain will officially receive the Republican nomination for president. The boy's mother, Sherry Johnston, said there had been no pressure put on her son to marry 17-year-old Bristol Palin and the two teens had made plans to wed before it was known she was pregnant.

"This is just a bonus," Johnston said.

The young man's presence could set off a media frenzy around the young couple as photographers and cameramen scramble for pictures of the two teenagers. On Monday, Palin and her husband, Todd, said their 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, planned to have the baby and wed a young man identified only as Levi. The family asked the media to respect the young couple's privacy as has been the tradition with children of candidates.

Sarah Palin is scheduled to address the convention Wednesday night and traditionally her family would join her at the conclusion of her speech.

Sherry Johnston said she was worried about her son dealing with all the attention. She said it was difficult enough for teenagers to deal with any pregnancy, having the entire nation watching made it worse.

Levi Johnston, a high school hockey player for Wasilla High School, is not listed on the team roster for 2008-2009, and his mother wouldn't say if he graduated. She said simply he's no longer a student and any further information would have to come from him.

The intense media scrutiny has stunned this suburban community about 40 miles north of Anchorage, with reporters camping out near the Johnston home.

"This is out of my league," Sherry Johnston said. "I'm just a country gal and I want to keep it that way."

She spoke Tuesday while standing in the driveway leading to her pale gray, two-story home situated on a densely wooded country lane. The home, like many in Alaska is adorned with moose and caribou antlers outside.

Many social conservatives have rallied behind Gov. Palin and her family's troubles. The McCain campaign has said the Palins are like any other American family and that "life happens."

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said that Palin's family and her daughter's pregnancy were not relevant to her potential performance as vice president. "I think people's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics."

Just days after she was picked as McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin has become a lightning rod for attention. Aside from her daughter's pregnancy, it was disclosed that a private attorney has been retained for her in a legislative ethics investigation for her dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner. It also was disclosed that Palin's husband had been arrested on a drunken-driving charge two decades ago.

(This version CORRECTS SUBS last graf to correct spelling of lightning.)

Ah, a high school drop-out and a pregnant teen. The Perfect Picture of American Family Values.

I think you forgot to mention that they're both white - something that seems to be a very important trait among Republicans if you're watching the RNC. Although, they are a little too YOUNG for that crowd.

Come on.....She made a statement ...AFTER....the republican law team that was sent up there to Alaska spoke to her.
I have to wonder...how much they paid her.

It's disguting. These kids should be in school...here it is school started and these poor kids are being proped up for pictures and used for political stunts.
I would have my daughter home, time to go back to school.
Out of the lime light and all...
oh...I couldn't do this to my daughter...no way, no how.

Love and Marriage....

Bristol...you are the love of my life...your mother bought me this engagement ring cause I can't afford it and my family can't either but I love you so much and your mother knows it , I would like you to be my wife...will you marry me only if we plan to not having the baby because I don’t think we can afford it?

…and Bristol goes…oh my God, Levi…this are beautiful, I will, I will, I will, but we now have a Sugar Uncle and his crony’s who will strap us with lots of cash for bailing them out of this mess…we don’t have to do the unholy act of abortion and if not my mother is a Governor and like my first son, she will find a way to bail us out. Don’t worry my future Husband…and hugs and kisses… and they break up on November 5th. How SAD!

Well, true, and don't forget what happens if they don't like you. Sarah puts political pressure on your boss to fire you.

Maybe Levi needs to work during the day, and get his GED at night school, now that he is a father to be...each situation is unique, and we should not jump to conclusions. The odds are clearly stacked against these kids remaining married, the data shows that the younger you marry, the harder it is to stay married. However, people have overcome those odds, and only time will tell. They have a hard road ahead of them, but they are lucky to have supportive, loving families.

Regardless of how small minded Sarah Palin's policy views are, her daughter's pregnancy and engagement are not for us to judge. Liberals should remember the true essence of their label. We are open to new experiences and new ideas. Liberal thinking means that we strive not to judge others for their life choices. If we are in favor of reproductive rights, that means every woman can choose what is best for her and her child. And making a "family decision" does not automatically imply that Bristol Palin was pressured into keeping her child. It does mean that she discussed it with her parents. Maybe they considered adoption, maybe they didn't...we don't know because it was a private decision by a family. We liberal thinkers prefer that the government stay out of our bedrooms and away from our kitchen tables, where most key family decisions are made.

Be careful when you throw your stones, you might someday become the glass.

What do we know about her son. Who is and where was his girlfriend for the last year? An email from an Alaskan told me that the average education of the town where she was voted to be mayor is 10th grade. Maybe that is a lot?

Palin is going to show a lot of Americans a side of Alaska about which they had no clue. Ask the average Alaskan what the solution is for a state-wide issue and I guarantee the response will be "federal dollars"...........yeah.......rugged individualism and up-by-your-bootstraps conservativism.

True it's not for anyone to judge anyone else's life or family. However, only liberals actually stick to that. The right turn the attack dogs loose at any opportunity, and if Sarah Palin were Barack Obama's VP choice they would have torn them both apart already. IT WOULDN'T BE A PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER.
I am comfortable commenting on Sarah Palin and her nomination, and for me it's not throwing stones. I'm a working mom, have been the mother of a pregnant teenage daughter, was a teenage bride myself, I'm an adopted child, and I disagree with her on almost every issue. Liberals tend to be more accepting of the differences in and mistakes of others, it doesn't mean we have to be doormats!

Gas is $11.00 a gallon in Alaska and a jar of Skippy is $10.49. I think it's fair to ask how Levi intends to support his family after the shot gun wedding.

At least Mrs. Johnston has some sensitivity to these kids. As a mother what was Palin thinking to put them thru this. As a human being how could McCain pick Palin knowing what these kids would be put thru. If Palin is the best person to be VP, she could have waited for ano time.

I agree with you miriamac. What was Sarah Palin thinking? What kind of mother would put her children through such hell? The daughter is being called all kinds of nasty names and it just keeps getting worse. I feel bad for the daughter. Sarah Palin should be taking care of her newborn baby instead of going on a campaign trail. It just shows how selfish she really is. As far as McCain knowing about the pregnancy, something tells me he didn't know. If that is the case, the man is sloppy with decisions and should not be President of the US. This is a shame that attention is being taken away from real issues like the economy, medical care and the war status. On another note, if the shoe were on the other foot, the republicans would make this issue 10x worse than what is going on now. It makes me sick that the republicans are trying to turn this into a normal issue. What a bunch of hypocrites.

I don't care if her underage daughter has been having unprotected sex. I do care when politicians like Palin and McCain and the rest of their ilk want to tell everyone how to live. Did this mother ever discuss birth control with her daughter? Did the daughter have any choice in whether to stay pregnant? Did she intend to get pregnant? Apparently teaching abstinence only failed this family. What do you say to other parents who don't think having a baby at 17 is such a swell idea? How is Young Levi going to support this family? When Palin says she made a choice, that's a falsehood. According to her narrow rigid fundamentalist beliefs there is no choice; You are pregnant, you are staying pregnant. If her daughter had been raped (heaven forbid) would she still have made her carry to term? Did the daughter have any say in this matter? I guess it's all moot, because if by some act of insanity this stupid nation of ours votes a Bush clone into office, you can bet that McCain will not let her near the Oval Office. She's on the ticket in a misogynistic ploy to get him elected and if that happens we won't hear much of her anymore, or at least until McCain's next medical emergency. And with a 1200 page medical history you can bet that's going to happen sooner than later.

This is what the abstinence crowd need to parade this couple around to show other teens how to act I realize thing happen in life having raised a daughter. I am not of the abstinence group and support sex education. But to me using your own daughter to advocate this is immoral its self. Why put her and this young man out before the public. The Republican want to say what family values she has seem to me she has none.

HuffPo please do not use the term "baby daddy" as it implies there is no relationship between the parents except the baby.

This is as deplorable as when Fox used it to describe the Obamas.
