WASILLA, Alaska — The boyfriend of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's unwed, pregnant daughter will join the family of the Republican vice presidential candidate at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Levi Johnston's mother said her 18-year-old son left Alaska on Tuesday morning to join the Palin family at the convention where Sen. John McCain will officially receive the Republican nomination for president. The boy's mother, Sherry Johnston, said there had been no pressure put on her son to marry 17-year-old Bristol Palin and the two teens had made plans to wed before it was known she was pregnant.

"This is just a bonus," Johnston said.

The young man's presence could set off a media frenzy around the young couple as photographers and cameramen scramble for pictures of the two teenagers. On Monday, Palin and her husband, Todd, said their 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, planned to have the baby and wed a young man identified only as Levi. The family asked the media to respect the young couple's privacy as has been the tradition with children of candidates.

Sarah Palin is scheduled to address the convention Wednesday night and traditionally her family would join her at the conclusion of her speech.

Sherry Johnston said she was worried about her son dealing with all the attention. She said it was difficult enough for teenagers to deal with any pregnancy, having the entire nation watching made it worse.

Levi Johnston, a high school hockey player for Wasilla High School, is not listed on the team roster for 2008-2009, and his mother wouldn't say if he graduated. She said simply he's no longer a student and any further information would have to come from him.

The intense media scrutiny has stunned this suburban community about 40 miles north of Anchorage, with reporters camping out near the Johnston home.

"This is out of my league," Sherry Johnston said. "I'm just a country gal and I want to keep it that way."

She spoke Tuesday while standing in the driveway leading to her pale gray, two-story home situated on a densely wooded country lane. The home, like many in Alaska is adorned with moose and caribou antlers outside.

Many social conservatives have rallied behind Gov. Palin and her family's troubles. The McCain campaign has said the Palins are like any other American family and that "life happens."

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said that Palin's family and her daughter's pregnancy were not relevant to her potential performance as vice president. "I think people's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics."

Just days after she was picked as McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin has become a lightning rod for attention. Aside from her daughter's pregnancy, it was disclosed that a private attorney has been retained for her in a legislative ethics investigation for her dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner. It also was disclosed that Palin's husband had been arrested on a drunken-driving charge two decades ago.

(This version CORRECTS SUBS last graf to correct spelling of lightning.)

NO war criminals who napalmed innocent women and children should EVER be President.

Bush 1 was a pilot. If you remember he ditched his plane due to enemy fire. Some say he ditched it too soon but since I wasn't there I can't really say for sure. What I am sure of is he wasn't up there dropping cotton candy. The Bush family is so powerful they may have staged the entire thing as far as I'm concerned. Bush certainly wasn't a hero, never mind a brave hero. And his sons have all followed in his trouble making, anti-everything footsteps. He followed Prescott so just goes to show "the apple don't fall far from the tree".
Also I am not supporting McCain due to my disgust with the entire Republican party, but I don't believe McCain was deciding what to drop or where to drop it. Very scary to think he may be in such a position if the Republicans (with Rove's help) can steal another election. That is what they do best.
So poo-poo on you PutinIsDaMan. Now if you really want to learn about a living war criminal outside of the United States you should study Putin (IsDaMan). If you do you'll be busy for quite a while so I guess we won't be hearing from you around here. Bye now.

I am concentrating on home grown terrorists, like C heney, R umsfeld, R ove, W olfowitz and the like. If this nation had spent a little more time looking at Oklahoma City, perhaps the WTC even would not have occurred.

Failures in her own family aside, Palin should not imposed her own opinion on others. Saying that Palin is "one of us" is a spin to have your vote but nothing is further from the true. Her teen pregnant daughter is lucky to have love and money but not other teen moms. VOTE FOR ISSUES: EQUAL PAY, WOMEN'S CHOICE, UNIVERSAL HEALTH INSURANCE

Conservatives rant and rave about teenage pregnancy and out-of-wedlock births among blacks and Hispanics, about how there is a lack of parenting, a lack of morals, promotion of sex by teaching about contraception, and a lack of "personal responsibility". They blame poverty on the lack of stable two-parent homes. But when it is a white teenager from a "good Republican home", suddenly it "just happens in life" or "it's just a bonus", "we're so proud she is keeping it". When the black or Hispanic girls decides to keep the baby, she is a "welfare queen".

This is not a personal issue, this is a campaign issue because the "family values" party has made it an issue. The "family values" party has attacked and condemned the "liberals" as being responsible for the "decline in morality". Well, since you can't wait to blame someone, who are you going to blame for Bristol's pregnancy??????? And if you give Bristol a pass, why do you condemn all the others?

And the other sad thing is that Bristol won't have the advantage my daughter did of an education..
And be advised Bristol.. He isn't grown up.. You will have more nights alone with a sick baby than
you are capable of knowing.

This is starting to play out like a bad week for Bristol Spears, oops I mean Palin. Be careful about tagging other people with tags or it just might come around and smack you in the face.

This is tantamount to the Beverly Hillbillies. How could an unplanned pregnancy to two teenagers be a bonus? Just two more potential enrollees on the public welfare system. These two don't even know who they are let alone having a kid to boot. Was this the same situation as Palin's sister did she marry the state trooper just to get a daddy for her kids as well? Are these the family values they espoused. Give me a frigging break.

What are the odds of this child having downs also?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:43 PM on 09/03/2008

Very low. Down Syndrome is related to maternal and paternal age, and as we know, these two parents are practically children

It is disgusting that any mother would allow her child's indiscretions to be thrust into the media spotlight and judged by anyone with ears. Gov. Palin obviously knew about her daughter's pregnancy before she accepted McCain's invitation, which poses the question: What kind of person puts her career gain ahead of their children's obvious need for privacy? It's morally reprehensible, and if that is the kind of character we as a political nation want to embrace or misinterpret as "strength", then I would like a new nation, please.

Hypocrisy: (hip-PAH-krass-ee) n. Republican outrage over the media's exposure and discussion regarding Sarah Palin's personal life and family matters, while Republicans dogmatically insist that the government should be able to interfere with your personal life by dictating your right to decide whether or not to have a family. See also "Irony."

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:06 PM on 09/03/2008

You don't even have to go that far to get to the hypocrisy with this. The Republicans have been talking about candidates families being off limits, and it being wrong to cover this story, yet they're pushing it further into the news by bringing Levi out to the convention. I almost think McCain's team wants this to stay in the forefront so people miss Troopergate, Palin almost being recalled as mayor of Wasilla, having a pattern of firing people who were among her "enemies...powerful enemies", wanting to censore Wasilla's library books, her affiliation with a secesionist organization, using her mayoral computer for political purposes, and who knows what all else that's going to come out.

Yes, and remember when the repub attack dogs went after Michelle Obama, and Barak said FAMILY members are off limits???? Pay back is a mother for ya.

Michelle Obama campaigned for her husband, which makes her comments about his character relevent. Bristol Palin has not campaigned for her mom, which is why she is off limits.

The question that still we don't have an answer for is: Is this her second Preganancy? can we see the medical records of where Palin gave birth?

Here is more tough questions to ask about the VP Selection McCain... "This is not a smear, it is our obligation who you select is ready to lead this country and not lie to us like George and you have been doing. "Where has Bristol Palin been for the past year? Has she been attending high school? Or was she absent because of infectious mononucleosis for between five and eight months, as is now being reported on the Internet? Why would a 43-year-old woman, on her fifth pregnancy, with a Down syndrome child, after her amniotic fluid has started to leak, not go to the nearest hospital immediately, even if she was in Texas for a speech? Why would she not only not go to the hospital in Texas, but take an eight-hour plane flight to Seattle and then Anchorage? Why would she choose to deliver the baby not in the nearest major facility in Anchorage but at a much smaller hospital near her home town? Why did the flight attendants on the trip home say she bore no signs of being pregnant?' It strikes me as likely that there are reasonable answers to these questions " more reasonable than the only one given so far" - Andrew Sullivan

Last night the republicans were talking about serving, they were all over the age of 50, was that a message for them to go recruit their grandkids? I think the military should be open to all ages, that way when older folks talk about fighting in insane wars, then they can go and serve themselves, and if they served before then they should be used to it.
