WASILLA, Alaska — The boyfriend of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's unwed, pregnant daughter will join the family of the Republican vice presidential candidate at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Levi Johnston's mother said her 18-year-old son left Alaska on Tuesday morning to join the Palin family at the convention where Sen. John McCain will officially receive the Republican nomination for president. The boy's mother, Sherry Johnston, said there had been no pressure put on her son to marry 17-year-old Bristol Palin and the two teens had made plans to wed before it was known she was pregnant.

"This is just a bonus," Johnston said.

The young man's presence could set off a media frenzy around the young couple as photographers and cameramen scramble for pictures of the two teenagers. On Monday, Palin and her husband, Todd, said their 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, planned to have the baby and wed a young man identified only as Levi. The family asked the media to respect the young couple's privacy as has been the tradition with children of candidates.

Sarah Palin is scheduled to address the convention Wednesday night and traditionally her family would join her at the conclusion of her speech.

Sherry Johnston said she was worried about her son dealing with all the attention. She said it was difficult enough for teenagers to deal with any pregnancy, having the entire nation watching made it worse.

Levi Johnston, a high school hockey player for Wasilla High School, is not listed on the team roster for 2008-2009, and his mother wouldn't say if he graduated. She said simply he's no longer a student and any further information would have to come from him.

The intense media scrutiny has stunned this suburban community about 40 miles north of Anchorage, with reporters camping out near the Johnston home.

"This is out of my league," Sherry Johnston said. "I'm just a country gal and I want to keep it that way."

She spoke Tuesday while standing in the driveway leading to her pale gray, two-story home situated on a densely wooded country lane. The home, like many in Alaska is adorned with moose and caribou antlers outside.

Many social conservatives have rallied behind Gov. Palin and her family's troubles. The McCain campaign has said the Palins are like any other American family and that "life happens."

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said that Palin's family and her daughter's pregnancy were not relevant to her potential performance as vice president. "I think people's families are off limits," Obama said. "And people's children are especially off limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics."

Just days after she was picked as McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin has become a lightning rod for attention. Aside from her daughter's pregnancy, it was disclosed that a private attorney has been retained for her in a legislative ethics investigation for her dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner. It also was disclosed that Palin's husband had been arrested on a drunken-driving charge two decades ago.

(This version CORRECTS SUBS last graf to correct spelling of lightning.)

I would like to know the ratio of teen pregnancies in the Pentecostal Church relative to the National average.

Before you vote McCain/Palin, you really should educate yourself about her belief system. Would you vote for Marshall Applewhite? I hope not.

In the following link I will introduce you to the religion of Sarah Palin:

Read somewhere, Alaska has 2.2 times national average of teen pregnancy. The ads about teen pregnancies are everywhere: on bus,... but that is the result of abstinence only, no prevention education. If you can't cure the cause: sex before marriage, then that's the result that stared you in the face! Luckily the Palins' daughter has love and money but what about other teen moms? The reality is in our society teen moms have a life of dependence, no education, poverty, multi partner, child abuse by non-parent partner.
VOTE FOR ISSUES: EQUAL PAY, WOMEN'S CHOICE, UNIVERSAL HEALTH INSURANCE.

Of course Ms. Johnston's song getting the Guv's daughter preggers is a "bonus." No doubt they expect the Palins to do their little boy all sort of taxpayer-funded favors. And everybody else as well . . .

I don't believe that the desperate promises made while waiting for a plus or minus sign on a plastic stick count as 'making plans to be married'. Your mileage may vary.

Thank Gov Palin for the attention and the choice to run for VP. No one twisted her arm, she saw a chance and took it, damn the consequences.

How's that for maternal instincts? Drag your family's dirty laundry onto the national stage for all to ridicule her daughter over. Isn't this some kind of emotional abuse?

Says a great deal about a mother who would put her daughter thru such a public exposure. I would think that she would have said--"no thanks, not at this time" to an invitation to come on the ticket. I would say with her "family values" she should be thinking of the lives of her children. After all . . .

I agree, but what really makes me wonder about this woman's priorities is the fact that she's willing to either drag her infant with Down's Syndrome across America or leave him in someone else's care for long periods of time. Family Values... not so much.

So they are just going to gloss right over thier whole original stance of absitnece, and the fact that moms got rid of all programs that helped teen age mothers?

I understand that Palin wants privacy for her family, but they fling the kids into the national limelight every chance they get. Now bringing this boy into the national media. She didn't have to do that. These kids will rebel against this later in life. That boy is not happy at all. It is all over his face. I feel sorry for these kids.

Women seeking an abortion want privacy, too, but the "Pro-Life" movement pickets the clinics and accosts them, screams at them, invades their world in every way. They can't claim privacy when they deny it to others.

If Philan starts living at the Naval Observatory, you and I will feed and clothe the baby. If Phalin does not get to live at the Naval Observatory, then the citizens of Alaska will clothe and feed the baby. Either way, someone is going to be shelling out...but life happens.

The sad thing for MOST teenage parents is that they just have no money to continue education, and must scrape by on minimum wage jobs and hope family members can help out with the expenses of a crib, car seat (If they can afford a car) and all the other necessities new babies require.

In this case, their families will BE SURE that these kids have all the nicest items for their new baby, they will be able to continue their education. There will be LOTS of financial support and this new young family will have many advantages the average American teens in this situation will never have.

So sure, it's a BONUS for them! They are not the average American families.

Interestingly enough, are the taxpayers also going to care for Palin's baby boy with Down's Syndrom. Or the question we all want to know is will one nanny suffice for both children or do we have to pay for two?

Regional Center and the School District of Residence will absorb most of the cost of caring for this child from CA 18 months through adulthood.

Funny thing is, I continually hear Palin's defender's say that she had nothint to do with her daughter's pregnancy. Who the heck raised the girl? Even if it's only one half of one percent, the parents have SOMETHING to do with the actions of their minor child.

TOO FUNNY!!! ROFLMAO!!!
When I was 17, back when Stonehenge was being built, I had a boyfriend who was unrelenting in his quest for attaining his "manhood". Believe me, I was sorely tempted by raging teenage hormones, however if the Bristol/Levi "problem" arose (this transpired before birth control pills and legal abortion), I knew that my parents would have me drawn and quartered....for starters. It worked as a great deterrent...for me, anyway. It sure didn't make my boyfriend happy at the time, though. Today he'd probably look back and thank me....but then again, maybe not... :oD

When I was 17, back when Michael Jackson was still black, I went to a Catholic school, where sex education was taught by a really scary-looking former nun. She reminded us of the church's position (pun intended) on premarital sex but emphasized that we had free will. Then she showed slides of STD-ed body parts until we all itched in private places. She also introduced as to contraceptives and gave us the effectiveness percentages. The highlight came when she demonstrated how to put on a condom (on her thumb). For years, my male classmates said whenever they were remotely tempted, the image of Dr. Gabriel with the rubber on her thumb came to mind, and that was the end of it. There was not one teenage pregnancy in our graduating class. One of the guys became a priest.

If young Mr. Johnston is in Minneapolis for the Branson, MO-meets-Promise Keeper hoedown-meets-country club shindig, why haven't had the media snapped some pictures? Maybe it's because Levi is in chains and shackles in the Hyatt boiler room.
--
I know this seems petty on many fronts, but Levi Johnston self-identifies as a "redneck" and it really doesn't make anyone bat an eye. And if you peruse the online-anything profiles, many people happily use that derisive term to describe themselves. Which begs the question: how have we degenerated so much that we use derisive terms such as "redneck" in euphemistic fashion? I realize that to term one's self as a "redneck" is to probably champion a love for the outdoors, for unpretentious activities, thought and dress. And of course, it is also a populist code word for 'racist.' All of these things---and then some---can be put under the umbrella of "redneck."
--
But when we start casually accept these kind of terms without fully thinking about the underlying dynamics---the complete intellectual disengagement of a large portion of the U.S., the casual acceptance of racism through a proxy term, the unknowing self-denigration---we will have people like Sarah Palin in ludicrously high positions of power.

Exactly. I have been astounded that while everyone is busy debating the candidates' experience, no one has ever mentioned the qualifications of a leader, a major one of which is knowledge--of history and other disciplines on which they can base their decisions in order to avoid catastrophic mistakes. Isn't that lack of education and knowledge at the Presidential level the hallmark of the past eight years? Isn't that exactly how we got here?

It's just the Republicans' way of trying to prove that all this is well and good, and the fact that the girls is pregnant is not big deal.

It is a big deal to condone teenage pregancy - the focus should be on avoiding teenage immoraity and premarital sex and adultery.

I always looked at the Evangelical Christians as standing on the higher moral ground. Not anymore - however much they try to spin this - they have lost all credibility and fast becoming the nation's laughing stock
