McCain Camp Battles National Enquirer Over Alleged Palin Affair

John McCain's presidential campaign is threatening a lawsuit against the National Enquirer over a print edition story the tabloid ran today alleging that Gov. Sarah Palin has had an extramarital affair with her husband's business partner.

The allegation would normally be dismissed by political observers as the random musings of a supermarket tabloid -- indeed, the McCain campaign said as much in its statements on Wednesday -- except that the paper has built up a reservoir of legitimacy following its earlier reporting on the John Edwards affair.

In a statement to the Huffington Post, a spokesman for the paper, who promised a larger report next week, tapped into that pool of quasi-respect.

"The National Enquirer's coverage of a vicious war within Sarah Palin's extended family includes several newsworthy revelations, including the resulting incredible charge of an affair plus details of family strife when the Governor's daughter revealed her pregnancy. Following our John Edwards' exclusives, our political reporting has obviously proven to be more detail-oriented than the McCain campaign's vetting process. Despite the McCain camp's attempts to control press coverage they find unfavorable, The Enquirer will continue to pursue news on both sides of the political spectrum."

Clearly, this is a touchy matter. Already, rumors that Palin's youngest son was actually the son of her daughter were batted down. And the McCain campaign has strenuously insisted that the current crop of insinuations is not only false but also potentially libelous.

"The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie," said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt. "The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."

But the Edwards reporting complicates matters. Just one month ago, conservatives were bemoaning the fact that no major media outlets had the temerity to follow the politically and personally sensitive rumors about the former North Carolina senator's infidelities. Jonah Goldberg, for example, wrote on the National Review's the Corner in later July that:

"Whatever the merits of the whole Edwards love child story, are we really supposed to believe that one of America's most famous trial lawyers wouldn't sue a publication that printed defamatory and slanderous lies about him? Also, it's worth pointing out that while the Enquirer may or may not be scrupulous in its choice of stories -- that's in the eye of the beholder -- it is pretty scrupulous about its facts. They win lawsuits. They've broken a host of stories the MSM guys couldn't."

Does the MSM now have an obligation to pursue this rumor, however touchy, or at least ask questions?

"The "success" with Edwards no doubt will give them some more credibility, although we should remember that some of the allegations in their "lovechild" stories have been far from proven (although also far from disproven)," wrote Greg Mitchell, editor of Editor and Publisher Magazine.
"Some of their Palin revelations may be quickly firmed up, prove bogus or more likely rest somewhere in-between for awhile. But what will be interesting is whether the Republicans and conservatives and MSM critics who jumped on the MSM and liberals for not quickly embracing the Enquirer's Edwards work will now pooh-pooh the Enquirer when it comes to THIS candidate....:"

And yet, at the same time, the Enquirer's story may be something of a break for the McCain campaign, which has come under siege for the Palin pick. If the Arizona Senator and his aides are able to effectively portray attacks on the Palin as the product of smear, sleaze and innuendo, it clouds those that are more legitimate. And with new attack lines opening up against Palin seemingly every hour, Democrats may be even more hesitant about straying into the tawdry.

if palin was not so arrogant, sarcastic and condescending in her tone and her sly, cheesy smile, then i would not care...but at this point, i really would like her to be put in her place in "reality"!! she needs to be knocked off the pedestal that she thinks she lives on...and quit trying to eventually force (especially now if she can get her wish to extend the powers of the vice presidency...give US a break!!) everyone to live how SHE thinks we should live...when SHE does not live by those "values" herself!!

You guys are nothing but a bunch of sour grapes. Comments like she went to the same University that I did and her major was the second easiest on campus. First by who's standard and second, who cares. And this business with only Republicans can get away with affairs, trying to make it look like the media is biased toward conservatives. If we look at the real record, we have Chris Mathews and Keith Oberman being demoted at MSNBC for being so biased to the left, the network had no other choice. Katie Couric at NBC is not exactly Jesse Helms and the rest of the network reports could be several democratic delegates. CBS and Dan Rather, well I would not even call that close to conservative. ABC can flip flop, but does have John Stossel who is conservative, but one man does not make a network. CNN has Glen Beck, but the rest of the network could make up 100 democratic delegates. Then there is Fox. Well, I will give you that their reporters are probably conservative, but that have the sense not to do as Mathews and Oberman and always present experts on both the conservative and liberal side of every issue. You know, I like Dick Morris more every day.

What I particularly like about Fox is how the hosts talk over and shout down guests who offer an alternative, non-biased perspective.

In a world where the Big Media is so hopelessly owned, only fringe media and comedy shows are able to report the actual news.

Comedy Central and the National Inquirer?

The world is upside down. I wish the days of Woodward & Bernstein were still here, and even then it was tough to expose criminals and liars! Watergate would have vanished in a puff if it happened today.

most shocking thing in the story: palin's husband has a business partner...? to do what?

Palin is a pit bull with lipstick who is a cunning linguist. She studied and perfected how to make lies sound like facts to gullible people.

Don't give her too much credit. I received my degree from the same university as she did, and I can tell you that her choice of major is the 2nd easiest on campus.

This very phony Sarah Palin is nothing but a redo of all the right wing men, such as ol' hypocrite Newt Gingrich & the rest of his buddies, the Hutchinson boys from Arkansas, all the politicians who tried to get Clinton impeached, all the while doing the same thing as Clinton, only in full fledged affairs, not just interludes. Cheney, Rove & Bush are no better, all a bunch of swaggering hypocrites & now they have a new voice. Why these right wing people can't see this is beyond me. When people try to impose their personal views into politics & make laws that affect us that a majority doesn't agree with, they should be PUT OUT & here we have another one that will try to do the same thing & they want to PUT HER IN? McCain ONLY chose her to get the right wingers to vote for him. Hello?? Do we really want to go there again????????? We've been there w/ the war & the roe vs wade for awhile. Now again? If the religious right wants to rule the world, why don't they start their own country & go for it? Personally, I cannot stand to look at Palin & her holier than thou expressions

As many said before this week: she quits, plays the victim, mission of distraction accomplished?

The left have been silenced and our media turned into Pravda. Who knew the alternative we have all been searching for would be this venerable tabloid? The Edwards story was the Rove thing in reverse! The right overreacted and now they are stuck with having endorsed the Enquirer as legitimate. I love it.

Why wasn't Huffpo or the DNC able to get this? Alaska is like a small town. When I saw the mag today, I was inspired, because the MSM is scared to tell this stuff. That paper is the Bible, no pun, of her base--people who don't read or watch news trust them. But the left and bloggers should just stand back, wait and see if it is a trap as noted below.

Unfortunately, I live in a "red" state, where my opinion or vote doesn't seem to count; however, I am really tired of my opinions being pushed to the wayside. So here goes...please, please, please Huffington Post, take this story and get it to the major news networks. These media outlets are playing right into the hands of the Rove-Cheney plan for McBush-Palin, and since the public so graciously persecuted Bill Clinton and John Edwards for their affairs, one good turn deserves another. This is poitical suicide if she did in fact have an affair, and where there is smoke, there is surely fire. We already know about McCain's affairs -- that no one in the media will touch -- so they're two peas in a pod -- who knows, maybe he's got his eyes set on her as well. :(

This is getting strange. Family friend of the Palin's attempted to have the divorce papers of Brad Hanson sealed. Mr. Hanson is ex-business partner of Todd Palin. Scott Richter states that information in the divorce papers may contain information like his phone number and address information he does not want the press to have. Problem is the alleged affair and divorce are years old and Mr. Richter is all over Zaba Search. I understand the media has doubled the size of that town.

Let the Enquirer handle it, to keep the backlash against the MSM down. MSM won't lose anything by not reporting it. They've got their hands full with her.

One would normally dismiss supermarket tabloid gossip, but they did expose the adultery of John Edwards and got a lot of factual information during the O.J. Simpson trial that the media giants missed. Only time and further revelations will tell where this story leads...
