John McCain's presidential campaign is threatening a lawsuit against the National Enquirer over a print edition story the tabloid ran today alleging that Gov. Sarah Palin has had an extramarital affair with her husband's business partner.

The allegation would normally be dismissed by political observers as the random musings of a supermarket tabloid -- indeed, the McCain campaign said as much in its statements on Wednesday -- except that the paper has built up a reservoir of legitimacy following its earlier reporting on the John Edwards affair.

In a statement to the Huffington Post, a spokesman for the paper, who promised a larger report next week, tapped into that pool of quasi-respect.

"The National Enquirer's coverage of a vicious war within Sarah Palin's extended family includes several newsworthy revelations, including the resulting incredible charge of an affair plus details of family strife when the Governor's daughter revealed her pregnancy. Following our John Edwards' exclusives, our political reporting has obviously proven to be more detail-oriented than the McCain campaign's vetting process. Despite the McCain camp's attempts to control press coverage they find unfavorable, The Enquirer will continue to pursue news on both sides of the political spectrum."

Clearly, this is a touchy matter. Already, rumors that Palin's youngest son was actually the son of her daughter were batted down. And the McCain campaign has strenuously insisted that the current crop of insinuations is not only false but also potentially libelous.

"The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie," said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt. "The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."

But the Edwards reporting complicates matters. Just one month ago, conservatives were bemoaning the fact that no major media outlets had the temerity to follow the politically and personally sensitive rumors about the former North Carolina senator's infidelities. Jonah Goldberg, for example, wrote on the National Review's the Corner in later July that:

"Whatever the merits of the whole Edwards love child story, are we really supposed to believe that one of America's most famous trial lawyers wouldn't sue a publication that printed defamatory and slanderous lies about him? Also, it's worth pointing out that while the Enquirer may or may not be scrupulous in its choice of stories -- that's in the eye of the beholder -- it is pretty scrupulous about its facts. They win lawsuits. They've broken a host of stories the MSM guys couldn't."

Does the MSM now have an obligation to pursue this rumor, however touchy, or at least ask questions?

"The "success" with Edwards no doubt will give them some more credibility, although we should remember that some of the allegations in their "lovechild" stories have been far from proven (although also far from disproven)," wrote Greg Mitchell, editor of Editor and Publisher Magazine.
"Some of their Palin revelations may be quickly firmed up, prove bogus or more likely rest somewhere in-between for awhile. But what will be interesting is whether the Republicans and conservatives and MSM critics who jumped on the MSM and liberals for not quickly embracing the Enquirer's Edwards work will now pooh-pooh the Enquirer when it comes to THIS candidate....:"

And yet, at the same time, the Enquirer's story may be something of a break for the McCain campaign, which has come under siege for the Palin pick. If the Arizona Senator and his aides are able to effectively portray attacks on the Palin as the product of smear, sleaze and innuendo, it clouds those that are more legitimate. And with new attack lines opening up against Palin seemingly every hour, Democrats may be even more hesitant about straying into the tawdry.

Truth is; Alaska is detached from America were their 'affairs' Sarah and husband' are talked about all the time by everyone in Alaska. You will find it were ever you. Looks like a wonderful, loving family doesn't it? It may very well be, but some people agree on different marital rules for other's without enforcing it in their own marriage.

I heard it was Sarah strayed first, but both were engaged in extramarital affairs. She did climb quickly in the political races. They were financially strapped as a young family....but picked up speed and whalla!!! Financially secured her spot and her husbands spot with the big oil finance, learned how to stronghold the community. As one interviewee on cnn the other day, she could be very intimidating. The TransCanada pipeline wasn't finished with it's proposal until Canadian native's cleared the way...shortly, otherwise Frank Macowski was the one pushing for that resource along with Palin of course, she was Governor, he preceeded her a year and a half ago. She once again taking credit for someone else's hardwork.

She's a great orator. To bad though her delivery is filibustering and her message are lies. But that is a Republican way. Talk about everything, but no details.

I read the Enquirer today. Guess word is Bristol is out of control and her mother is never around to keep an eye on her. Quite obvious.

Macowski is a Democrat, isn't he?
Just listen to her lies through her teeth and you would know what kind of a power-grabbed pitbull with lipstick this babe is.

How Long Ago?

The Enquirer article states that when Todd Palin learned of the affair, he broke off his business relationship and friendship with Scott Richter. When did that happen?

Deeds on the the site of the Alaska State Recorder show that the Richter's and the Palin's were involved in transactions as late as 2005. Here are links to 2 deeds. The 2nd deed is 3 pages and includes signatures of all 4 of them:

There is a heavy, heavy effort by the republican machine to create a new story for the old dinosaur. An affair, one that is denied, of course, will add a little steam to the new image.

Dems should let the republicans go where they want to go: Encourage the Sean Hannity's and Laura Ingrahams in their comparisons of Palin to Reagan and build her up as a return to the eighties Reagan times. This will ensure that she becomes a nobody and a republican defeat and it should be easy to do.

As irresistable as this story seems, it isn't part of the central issue. I confess that I bought a copy of the Enquirer to encourage all of the bad press possible with regard a vice-presidential pick that proves Senator McCain belongs, not in the oval office, but in nursing home. But even with all of the warnings from the press that this is yet another diversionary tactic by the GOP, it's hard not to feel satisfaction in watching the same party that wants to police us in and out of our bedrooms, having one of their own - ironically one of the most self-righteous and absolutist - devoured by the press for being immoral. The lying, hypocritical, sanctimonious nut-jobs from the right deserve this, and frankly, I'm going to rub their faces in it, laughing as they whine about how "mean spirited" I'm being. My heart bleeds.

This smells very much like the Dan Rather story about Bush during the 2004 election. No one looked at the facts laid out but Dan Rather (all true), instead, they only focused on the forged documents sent to him by the REPUBLICANS and they republicans got what they wanted: discredit Dan Rather and subconsequently the MSM making it look like the MSM is misleading people about Bush and they need to react to that by actually electing Bush again. I see the fingerprints of Karl Rove all over this. The National Enquire better watch and carefully chose their sources. I'd say this is even easier for the Rovians (if they are the source) because there won't be a compelling evidence. It'll go he said she said, and couple of weeks before the election her business partner shows up on Gretta Van Saster denying the affair and Palin in the second segment crying and asking God to forgive those who spread those rumors because God is loving and forgiving

No suprise here after the govenor's embellished, open ended details about her sell of government property (plane) on ebay, I figure McSame-Shame will need a lot of shovels between now and November.

So this is good news for McCain. They have both had affairs. I understand McCain has had many and Palin just one. If she has more experience, then may be she will catch up with McCain. I would say that she is a cancer to the ticket, but Mccain has cancer and it could take off at any time, Vote Palin as President to come

Repubs can say what they want about their convention, but never in history has the sitting president and vice-president missed their own convention. That bad huh?
