John McCain's presidential campaign is threatening a lawsuit against the National Enquirer over a print edition story the tabloid ran today alleging that Gov. Sarah Palin has had an extramarital affair with her husband's business partner.

The allegation would normally be dismissed by political observers as the random musings of a supermarket tabloid -- indeed, the McCain campaign said as much in its statements on Wednesday -- except that the paper has built up a reservoir of legitimacy following its earlier reporting on the John Edwards affair.

In a statement to the Huffington Post, a spokesman for the paper, who promised a larger report next week, tapped into that pool of quasi-respect.

"The National Enquirer's coverage of a vicious war within Sarah Palin's extended family includes several newsworthy revelations, including the resulting incredible charge of an affair plus details of family strife when the Governor's daughter revealed her pregnancy. Following our John Edwards' exclusives, our political reporting has obviously proven to be more detail-oriented than the McCain campaign's vetting process. Despite the McCain camp's attempts to control press coverage they find unfavorable, The Enquirer will continue to pursue news on both sides of the political spectrum."

Clearly, this is a touchy matter. Already, rumors that Palin's youngest son was actually the son of her daughter were batted down. And the McCain campaign has strenuously insisted that the current crop of insinuations is not only false but also potentially libelous.

"The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie," said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt. "The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."

But the Edwards reporting complicates matters. Just one month ago, conservatives were bemoaning the fact that no major media outlets had the temerity to follow the politically and personally sensitive rumors about the former North Carolina senator's infidelities. Jonah Goldberg, for example, wrote on the National Review's the Corner in later July that:

"Whatever the merits of the whole Edwards love child story, are we really supposed to believe that one of America's most famous trial lawyers wouldn't sue a publication that printed defamatory and slanderous lies about him? Also, it's worth pointing out that while the Enquirer may or may not be scrupulous in its choice of stories -- that's in the eye of the beholder -- it is pretty scrupulous about its facts. They win lawsuits. They've broken a host of stories the MSM guys couldn't."

Does the MSM now have an obligation to pursue this rumor, however touchy, or at least ask questions?

"The "success" with Edwards no doubt will give them some more credibility, although we should remember that some of the allegations in their "lovechild" stories have been far from proven (although also far from disproven)," wrote Greg Mitchell, editor of Editor and Publisher Magazine.
"Some of their Palin revelations may be quickly firmed up, prove bogus or more likely rest somewhere in-between for awhile. But what will be interesting is whether the Republicans and conservatives and MSM critics who jumped on the MSM and liberals for not quickly embracing the Enquirer's Edwards work will now pooh-pooh the Enquirer when it comes to THIS candidate....:"

And yet, at the same time, the Enquirer's story may be something of a break for the McCain campaign, which has come under siege for the Palin pick. If the Arizona Senator and his aides are able to effectively portray attacks on the Palin as the product of smear, sleaze and innuendo, it clouds those that are more legitimate. And with new attack lines opening up against Palin seemingly every hour, Democrats may be even more hesitant about straying into the tawdry.

Hey, I was an ardent John Edwards supporter and I have always loathed the National Enquirer, but I have got to hand it to them---it was true, they did their homework and they went with it. If they print it and don't have the proof sue them. Carol Burnett did and she won.

Isn't the ratio of men to women like 10 to 1 in Alaska? Sounds like a reality show in the making.
If they prove an extra-marital affair, then I am sure these regugs will spin it. It will be the newest thing that makes her "every woman".

If true, what a deal that would be. Both members of the republican ticket with the same moral background and values. Republicans - the party of family values.

Now that you mention it, I haven't heard Republicans speak much about family values lately. Every time they criticize Obama, I like him better.

I have two theories as to why McSame picked Palin:

He picked her to use as a scapegoat for when he loses.

Or

He picked her knowing that she would never make it to election day and will have to drop out of the race for "Family reasons", so he could pick either Ridge of Lieberman at the last minute without worry about the "Base" causing trouble so close to election day.

The Republicans always go for the jugular! Now, it's time for the Democrats to stop being so polite. Counterattack, NOW!

McSame/Palin = 4 more years of failed Bush policies.

How has the Bush economy worked so far? You like it vote for this crew that has failed to even mention their failures of the past eight years.

You want to change things, vote all candidates with (R) after their names out of office and send them back to their criminal backgrounds.

As a democrat, I could care less about the trash lives of others, I have enough baggage in mine to go around. I see this as a shortfall of the McSame campaign. You would think that if he did his due diligence, he would find this stuff before making the selection thereby having a plan to deal with it or avoiding it by choosing someone else. I have read that the powers that run the GOP made him choose Sarah which raises the question of what will he do when the lobbyists who own him pressure him. McSame is not the change we need. McSame is more failed Bush policies.

I was shocked when they turned out to be spot on about Edwards, so maybe its true. One thing is for sure I wont automatically dismiss it out of hand like I would have before. I hope its true so that we can get Palin off the ticket before we have an ironic thing in common with Iran - read up on the 3rd wave,Joels Army & Dominion movement that Palin is involved in with The Assemblies of God and see how close it is in theory with radical theorcay in other parts of the world - just substitute a few cultural words, same concept.

Who knows if this story of a Palin affain is true or not. I think it may be, but one thing any mature person who follows politics knows is that no politician is as squeaky clean as the GOP paints Palin. The GOP has a clear and present weakness in going for the moral highground and it's obvious they want to sell Palin as someone who goes without sin, and that is what's going to send this whole Palin thing down the drain. That is why they are attacking the media as a part of their campaign. It's a pre-emptive strike on the American Press,

The next time I won't be so quick to move past the grocery counter where Enquirer is sold. They blew the John Edwards affair into being and it was factual. I hope they can bring forward the sordid facts on Sarah Pain before it's too late. The MSM isn't going to do it. They're behaving like a gaggle of geese that lost their leader or mom or whatever.

First, when something seems too good to be true, it usually isn't true. Second, I believe the National Enquirer is owned by Murdoch? They don't really care very much about their reputation and this could be just a ploy to disarm the real critics that have the truth about Sarah Palin. They'll claim smears and lies, yet they won't EVER mention the negative and false smears about Obama that have been going around on the net since he got into this thing.

Watch out. These are twicky wascles!

The question becomes, is he willing to burn a profit center like this on a stunt? They would not survive the backlash on their base audience if this is made up. If you follow their history, it would be the first time they did something purely partisan. They would basically be done as a quasi legitimate news source. Also, their reporters may be a bit more savvy than Rather's producer. The stuff on her and her daughter's war alone has the ring of truth and is very damaging.

Who is Gov. Palin's alleged lover and what do they know about him? I have not heard one word in the MSM. If they had this kind of lead on Obama it would be all over for him.

This timimg for the republicans spells big trouble. McCain could have found a VP that people know. Breaking in a new face and one steeped in soap opera is not the path to winning the presidency. People know Obama. We have been vetting him for 19 months. People know Biden. the old saw..."Better safe than sorry" will apply.
