ST. PAUL, Minn. — Greeted by thunderous applause, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin presented herself to the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, and millions of Americans watching from home, as a small-town outsider ready to join John McCain's ticket in waging "a tough fight in this election against confident opponents at a crucial hour for our country."

"I will be honored to accept the nomination for vice president of the United States," she said in the convention's most anticipated speech. The 44-year-old, self-described "hockey mom" still awaits formal nomination for the second spot on the ticket.

With those words, the crowd roared _ and the flashes of thousands of cameras reflected off her glasses.

It was the crowning moment of a roller-coaster week in which the first woman ever on a Republican presidential ticket has faced questions about how closely the McCain campaign scrutinized her. She also has heard a wide range of inquiries about family issues, her policy positions and her record of public service.

Palin took crowd-delighting swipes at Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and what she called the "Washington elite."

"The American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of 'personal discovery.' This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer," Palin said, a clear reference to Obama's time as a community organizer in Chicago.

And to the media that had closely examined her record, she said: "Here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

As she concluded her speech, her family and then McCain greeted her on stage. "Don't you think we made the right choice for the next vice president. What a beautiful family," McCain said to loud cheers.

The Obama campaign had less than a warm greeting, saying Palin's speech was "written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years." The speech was written by Matthew Scully, who met Palin for the first time last week.

Selected by McCain only last Friday, Palin addressed the convention amid questions about her qualifications and relative lack of experience.

The first-term governor had top billing at the convention on a night delegates also lined up for a noisy roll call of the states to deliver their presidential nomination to McCain.

Watching her speech were her husband Todd and their children, including 17-year-old Bristol Palin, whom the Palins disclosed earlier in the week was five months pregnant. Bristol Palin's 18-year-old boyfriend and apparent fiance, Levi Johnston, was seated with them.

McCain shook up the presidential race by picking Palin, a little-known governor less than two years in office. Since then, a bright spotlight has been trained on the life and record of the Republican governor who has bucked the state's political establishment.

Days after Palin made her debut on the national stage with McCain, the campaign announced her unmarried daughter's pregnancy. Other disclosures followed, including that a private attorney is authorized to spend $95,000 of state money to defend her against accusations of abuse of power and that Palin sought pork-barrel projects for her city and state, contrary to her reformist image.

"Our family has the same ups and downs as any other ... the same challenges and the same joys," she said.

Noting that the couple's oldest son, Track, 19, was shipping out to Iraq in eight days with the Army infantry, Palin praised McCain as "a true profile in courage, and people like that are hard to come by."

"He's a man who wore the uniform of this country for 22 years, and refused to break faith with those troops in Iraq who have now brought victory within sight. And as the mother of one of those troops, that is exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief," she said.

Largely unknown outside her home state, Palin told the convention: "I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids' public education better," she said, speaking of her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population of about 6,500.

"When I ran for city council, I didn't need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too," she said.

Before becoming governor, Palin served as mayor of Wasilla, she recounted, adding: "And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities."

In another barb directed at the Illinois Democrat, Palin said: "Here's how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

A former TV sportscaster, Palin delivered her speech in a firm, cheerful voice. It was her first chance to introduce and define herself to the American public and to explain to fellow Republicans how her experiences as Alaska governor would help galvanize the GOP ticket.

She strongly endorsed more oil exploration and drilling. "Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems _ as if we all didn't know that already. But the fact that drilling won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all," she said.

Palin has been an aggressive advocate for drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, while McCain opposes drilling there. That difference was not touched on in the speech.

The media made McCain and he has gotten many a pass. Well this is what the other people deal with so get use to it. There are a lot of questionable things in Palins path. So McCain had better get use to his Veep who believe it is her task to pave he way for the second coming of Christ but seems to be more AntiChrist like. Obama was the first to say children and family were off limits. Unlike the gop who always said family is fair game like Michelle Obama and attacked her. So for her to blame him for it is just like the GOP. Palin's daughter got herself knocked up, hid it the first day, the Enquirer was on her trail and all of a sudden it is exposed. This is a sympathy vote but we are too smart for that. She laughed at a woman who was recovering from cancer treatment on a radio show as the DJ took shots at the woman. Palin is Icy cold Anti-Christ. And she voted against equal pay for women. No rock unturned....

Is despicable that someone who is a presidential candidate, cares nothing about this country because he is willing to gamble his ticket into the WH. What does it tell you about his judgment and his Country First (mambo jumbo) lines?
When this man; who can possibly be the next president of the USA, the leader of the Free World, picks a woman that has no foreign policy experience whatsoever, and is no way qualified to be the VP of this country.
I am a woman and I don't care whether we have a woman or a man VP, but I expect to have a qualified person to be a VP. Does McCain can really look himself in the mirror and believe this woman is qualified to be a Vice-President? He is willing to gamble our future and the security of this Country First.
McCain is only using this woman to get into the White House, is not Country First but McCain First. Please don’t let him.

Is Palen a decoy like Harriet Meiers, to be thrown aside if the outrage gets too loud, in favor of Tom Ridge, for the moderates, or for Mike Huckabee, too late for effective counterattacks?

See litigationandtrial.com: Fool Us Twice: Sarah Palen is Not The CAndidate, by Maxwell Kennerly.

Are Keith and Rachel and Thom Hartmann going along with the blather for the ratings?

Spiro Agnew lives!!!
Did Wm. Safire help on this text too?
When all else fails, attack the press (and they deserve it after their limp wristed questions before the war) but this liberal media excuse is getting as tired as the threat of gay rights or whatever GOP scare tactic is on deck this week.
I want to vote for John, but this woman is as frightening as the Big Dick we now have as VP.

Seems like the blame game is working to me. Every talk show host and pundit I saw raved about P@lin's speech and talked about like she's the best think since sliced bread.

On camera. You should hear what they say with the cameras are off. They are laughing their asses off while they donate to Obama. Obama after Palin's speech = $8million Republicans after Palin's speech -= $1 million. People aren't falling for this tired GOP crap this time.

Question - How many Flags will they wave tonight. How many times will they say "dangerous world" "terrorists" "fear" "scary" and "protect" Play the game. If you guess correctly you win a new CAR!

No, I think CNN's nose is out of joint because of McCain's childish reaction to Campbell Brown's trying to get an answer from a Repub spokesman. Tonight I hear a definite bias toward Dems coming from her cohorts. Wolf Blitzer announced Cindy McCain was going to speak about her husband and that she would "go on and on." I just read a story put out by the RNC referring to Palin as "a mother, moosehunter and maverick." I burst out laughing and am hoping they stay with that description. And I hope they add "successful eBayer." lol

Is this "tax and spend" line getting a little tired yet. I pay more in taxes now despite our tax rebate and cuts. The shift is from federal tax to sales tax. There is tax on every dollar I spend. The economic policy that is driving prices through the roof is also costing me more in tax dollars. And where is that budget surplus that the Bush adminstration inherited? And your going to put that on the democrats.

The want to paint themselves (Palin and McCain) as the ordinary (woman or man) of the people. We had an ordinary person. One who goes with his gut. One who some said we wouldn't mind still down and having a beer with. Look where that got us.

I don't want ordinary, I want extraordinary. I want someone that garners respect from all people who meet them. I want someone who is thoughful, inteligent and can bring all people together.
They put Obama down last night as lacking experience but he is doing thing today that McCain and Palin could never pull off.

Ten's of thousands of people in Germany showed up to see Obama. McCain is luck if he can get 5000 to show up to see him in his own country.

Obama has organized one of the most impressive and massive campaign's in the history of the world . McCain is willing to pander to anyone with deep pockets. His message drifts to the objectives of the largest contributor.

theguruofreason it is close but he would be OK under Alaska law. In another state it might be different. But Bistol conceived out of wedlock just like mom. Do the math. Either Track Palin was conceived out of wedlock or he was a month and a half premature. Her reason for eloping according to mom was "to save money". Give me a break.

Reading this article, I just realized that Bristol's boyfriend is guilty of Statutory Rape. I truly don't mean to distract from the issues that should be apparent at the moment, but is anyone talking about that?

Anyway, Palin lied quite a bit in her speech, but it was written for her, so was she really lying? I like the part where she said that Obama has no energy plan (when in fact he said that he would devote $120 billion over the next 10 years to solar/wind/hydroelectric power), and then proceeded to roll out a very similar line on energy that Obama used during his speech, with the exceptions being talking about building more nuclear plants and crude oil pipelines. They both spoke about nuclear energy and "clean coal" (which, by the way, is imaginary) and expanding American efforts to make us less dependant on foreign nations (when really most of the oil wells in the middle-east are owned by US corporations).

Sarah NEVER tells the truth. She lies, lies, lies- day in and day out. She shifts the blame to anyone and everyone else. See how she offered Bristol up on the altar of political gain? This forced marriage between Bristol and Levi will probably work out as well as her sister Molly's marriage to Trooper Mike Wooten.

"Palin was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular, and she's won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a $1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain's campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax."

Yup, Yup. Sarah is an extreme right wing, good idea stealing, independent, money grabbing socialist. I wonder who is paying for her family's total wardrobe and hair makeovers? If Mc-Pain loses the election, will she have to give back all the new clothes? Or can that be her consolation prize?

Hmmmmm....what was that Sarah Palin said about the media. It seems she thought Hillary shouldn't bring up a media bias. Watch the clip.

Give me a break!! The media has gone after her and her family like a pack of attack dogs. Running innuendos and lies to cloud her image. Media excuse was - we didn't have enough time to check out everything before stories went to print, e.g., US magazine. Well, where is that same scrutiny of Sen. Obama who has a "do nothing" record in the Senate and Illinois legislature, sat on a board with a convicted terrorist and did a "coffee"at this same person's house to begin a campaign. and has made more flip flops on every single issue he held during his primary race against Hillary Clinton. It took him 3 tries to get a "position"on Russia invading Georgia, and it ended up being the same position that John McCain pronounced on the 1st try. The media is disgracelly biased toward Barack Obama. People are sick of the media trying to use it's 1st amendment rights to manipulate people to their point of view by cheerleading their candidate and trying to destroy anyone else. Shame on all of you!!
