ST. PAUL, Minn. — Greeted by thunderous applause, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin presented herself to the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, and millions of Americans watching from home, as a small-town outsider ready to join John McCain's ticket in waging "a tough fight in this election against confident opponents at a crucial hour for our country."

"I will be honored to accept the nomination for vice president of the United States," she said in the convention's most anticipated speech. The 44-year-old, self-described "hockey mom" still awaits formal nomination for the second spot on the ticket.

With those words, the crowd roared _ and the flashes of thousands of cameras reflected off her glasses.

It was the crowning moment of a roller-coaster week in which the first woman ever on a Republican presidential ticket has faced questions about how closely the McCain campaign scrutinized her. She also has heard a wide range of inquiries about family issues, her policy positions and her record of public service.

Palin took crowd-delighting swipes at Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and what she called the "Washington elite."

"The American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of 'personal discovery.' This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer," Palin said, a clear reference to Obama's time as a community organizer in Chicago.

And to the media that had closely examined her record, she said: "Here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

As she concluded her speech, her family and then McCain greeted her on stage. "Don't you think we made the right choice for the next vice president. What a beautiful family," McCain said to loud cheers.

The Obama campaign had less than a warm greeting, saying Palin's speech was "written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years." The speech was written by Matthew Scully, who met Palin for the first time last week.

Selected by McCain only last Friday, Palin addressed the convention amid questions about her qualifications and relative lack of experience.

The first-term governor had top billing at the convention on a night delegates also lined up for a noisy roll call of the states to deliver their presidential nomination to McCain.

Watching her speech were her husband Todd and their children, including 17-year-old Bristol Palin, whom the Palins disclosed earlier in the week was five months pregnant. Bristol Palin's 18-year-old boyfriend and apparent fiance, Levi Johnston, was seated with them.

McCain shook up the presidential race by picking Palin, a little-known governor less than two years in office. Since then, a bright spotlight has been trained on the life and record of the Republican governor who has bucked the state's political establishment.

Days after Palin made her debut on the national stage with McCain, the campaign announced her unmarried daughter's pregnancy. Other disclosures followed, including that a private attorney is authorized to spend $95,000 of state money to defend her against accusations of abuse of power and that Palin sought pork-barrel projects for her city and state, contrary to her reformist image.

"Our family has the same ups and downs as any other ... the same challenges and the same joys," she said.

Noting that the couple's oldest son, Track, 19, was shipping out to Iraq in eight days with the Army infantry, Palin praised McCain as "a true profile in courage, and people like that are hard to come by."

"He's a man who wore the uniform of this country for 22 years, and refused to break faith with those troops in Iraq who have now brought victory within sight. And as the mother of one of those troops, that is exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief," she said.

Largely unknown outside her home state, Palin told the convention: "I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids' public education better," she said, speaking of her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population of about 6,500.

"When I ran for city council, I didn't need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too," she said.

Before becoming governor, Palin served as mayor of Wasilla, she recounted, adding: "And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities."

In another barb directed at the Illinois Democrat, Palin said: "Here's how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

A former TV sportscaster, Palin delivered her speech in a firm, cheerful voice. It was her first chance to introduce and define herself to the American public and to explain to fellow Republicans how her experiences as Alaska governor would help galvanize the GOP ticket.

She strongly endorsed more oil exploration and drilling. "Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems _ as if we all didn't know that already. But the fact that drilling won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all," she said.

Palin has been an aggressive advocate for drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, while McCain opposes drilling there. That difference was not touched on in the speech.

This has always been one of their tactics. If the going gets tough and questions tougher, just blast the media or the Obama campaign for being biased and unfair. Make them answer the questions and don't let their bullying and intimidation work!!

One of "their" tactics ? Were you talking about the Republican Party?
Maybe you have been in a coma for the last 14 years, what you wrote sounds exactly like the rhetoric of Hillary Clinton. Sit down and breathe deeply and when the kool-aid has worn off perhaps you will begin to think clearly again.

What? Are you serious? Obama has had a free pass in the MSM from day one. He has beholden media types admitting to getting a tingling feeling run up their legs when he speaks. Then there are the vidoe clips of the "unbiased" media standing and cheering at his convention. Again, pot - meet kettle.

Faux Noise beat us about the head and shoulders with Rev. Wright, Michelle, and others for WEEKS and MONTHS on end. Turnabout IS fair play.

Can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Go back to Moosejaw.

The Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University found that ABC, NBC and CBS were tougher on Obama than McCain during the first six weeks of the general-election campaign. 28% of opinion pieces were positive for Obama and 72% negative.

Yes, the MSM has been disproportonately focusing on Obama, but 72% negative coverage does not exactly constitute a free pass.

What planet have you been on? 0ba-ma's tangential as well as close affiliations were shown 24/7 for at least 2 months. Everybody he has ever known who has done or said anything controversial was dumped in his lap. Any comment he made that could be jumped on and twisted was used against him and his wife. The only reason his children were not brought into the fray is because they are two young. Although somebody did say they thought the oldest child acted "to grown".

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, SARA PALIN !!!!!

You have so energized me I can hardly sit still long enough to write!
While I WAS contributing and writing letters in THIS race, (and promise to do even more) I realize I wasn't doing enough for WOMEN, so I've now committed to a minimum of 100 hours over the next several weeks to work for not just one but TWO WOMEN:
Kay Hagan running for the State Senate in NC ... and BEV PERDUE who is running for Governor.

They're ALL Democrats, but it's the best I can do, sweetie. Thanks a bunch!

They'll have to be blaming a lot of people, the way things are going for them.

Maybe they'll (randomly) get to 'themselves' some day ...

I cannot believe even McCain, actually both John and Cindy, brought out the line that Palin is a foreign policy wonk because Alaska is next to Russia.

And the Corporate Media does not call them on it.

Except, of course, the Daily Show, which is why they have more credibility.

Lincoln was right. We can only be destroyed from within. And Sen. Biden was right; this may be our last chance to save our amazing government.

I am horrified by McCain's incredibly bad judgment .His silly choice of his self-reported "soul mate", Political Barbie, underlines McCain's obvious lack of concern for our nation's future AND SAFETY. Further, a VP candidate who cannot be questioned by the national press predicts a VERY SCARY ELECTION. Rove's hand in crafting this horror is visible. You know, the Rove who just spit in the eye of our congress's judicial committee, OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS.

It's time investigative reporters in America earn their salt. Public documents exist in Alaska and the FOI act is still in law -- at least so far. Go. fellow j's, go!

As for McCain using the POW argument to excuse this nomination and other blunders", take a look at the YouTube site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KjsEs46C70

I offer you this interesting video of a POW who was in the same prison with Sen.McCain --Please pass this on to all media.
A military vet with two decorated war heroes in my family who says NO TO MCCAIN. .
PS. a note to McCain; All women are not interchangeable.

I agree completely, lets get it all out there for everyone to see! Lets send fact finders to Alaska and Illinois so that we can find out what Obama has really been up to as well!
As for the press, shame on them! perhaps they along with our Congress should all be thrown out and replaced.

Take a look at the magazine covers next time you're at the checkout. Palin has been painted with a negative brush on every one of them. By contrast, Obama and Michelle had nothing but presidential-like photos and positive headlines on their covers...and you disagree that there is media bias? News media no longer covers news...it is disgusting.

With this one thing she said I absolutely agree. When bush was popular the MSM jumped up and down when he even walked across the floor. Lining up to kiss butt. Now that obama is the guy who they think is popular they did and are doing the same thing. MONEY MONEY MONEY SELL SELL SELL that's all the MSM thinks about. They don't care that Hillary Clinton was best for this country because they thought obama was it they kissed butt for him like they did bush.

If we ever had a free press in this country that told the truth regardless of the thing to do to try to sell we would have a country not mired down in lies, crookedness and corruption.

...but the media didn't vote Obama in as the nominee, the people did. Maybe the people didn't want Senator Clinton in. Maybe there weren't enoguh people supporting Senator Clinton. How is that the media's fault.

If enough people don't support their candidate, the candidate loses. Except our current president.

By going after the press they don't have to explain her background and rationale why they chose her. As we all know John McCain canceled his interview with Larry King because Mc Cain didn't like the the interview Campbell Brown had with his aid. His aid would not answer the questions and when he did answer a question he didn't tell the truth and Campbell called him on it. Good for her. Has anyone considered that if McCain were to be president would he not talk to the press because he does not want to be questioned? The fact that they are attacking the press I find extremely worrisome. Palin should be giving interviews all over promoting herself. Instead they are hiding her out. She has to be vetted by the press. John McCain this is for you......... freedom of speech is in our constitution.... it applies for every American, not just you and your party....

Sarah is incredible! Her speech was fantastic. She's intelligent, quick on her feet...and REAL. That's something we don't see in politics. Usually speeches are filled with rhetoric and are incredibly boring - politicians are usually incredibly boring. Here we have such an incredibly inspiring woman. She's funny and beautiful too. She's taking a stand fearlessly, shaking things up, and inspiring millions. She makes me want to reach higher! Truly incredible! I love her!

Then go to Alaska, because she'll be there on Nov. 5th.

I won't even say more. You can read....the news is full of info. if they talked about rev. wright, they will talk about her Jew Hating Pastor. If they talk about her PTA experience, they will talk about Harvard Law Review President. If they talk about patriotism, they will talk about her involvement to have Alaska suseed fro the US. When they talk about lobbying, she will be mentioned. Lets see her in an interview. I thought the line from Cindy McCain about living near Russia was a mistake and made a funny joke, but its being used..its ALL a joke. She is not vetted...she has to show us what she can do, other than attack.

The Repubs cannot see that there is no equivalency between the blatant bias at Fox News, in evidence 24 hours a day, and this rush of curiosity about Palin, driven by the fact that she is an unknown. They are unable to see the differences between the two----it's not that they refuse to, its that they are psychologically and intellectually unable to.
