ST. PAUL, Minn. — Greeted by thunderous applause, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin presented herself to the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, and millions of Americans watching from home, as a small-town outsider ready to join John McCain's ticket in waging "a tough fight in this election against confident opponents at a crucial hour for our country."

"I will be honored to accept the nomination for vice president of the United States," she said in the convention's most anticipated speech. The 44-year-old, self-described "hockey mom" still awaits formal nomination for the second spot on the ticket.

With those words, the crowd roared _ and the flashes of thousands of cameras reflected off her glasses.

It was the crowning moment of a roller-coaster week in which the first woman ever on a Republican presidential ticket has faced questions about how closely the McCain campaign scrutinized her. She also has heard a wide range of inquiries about family issues, her policy positions and her record of public service.

Palin took crowd-delighting swipes at Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and what she called the "Washington elite."

"The American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of 'personal discovery.' This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer," Palin said, a clear reference to Obama's time as a community organizer in Chicago.

And to the media that had closely examined her record, she said: "Here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

As she concluded her speech, her family and then McCain greeted her on stage. "Don't you think we made the right choice for the next vice president. What a beautiful family," McCain said to loud cheers.

Story continues below

The Obama campaign had less than a warm greeting, saying Palin's speech was "written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years." The speech was written by Matthew Scully, who met Palin for the first time last week.

Selected by McCain only last Friday, Palin addressed the convention amid questions about her qualifications and relative lack of experience.

The first-term governor had top billing at the convention on a night delegates also lined up for a noisy roll call of the states to deliver their presidential nomination to McCain.

Watching her speech were her husband Todd and their children, including 17-year-old Bristol Palin, whom the Palins disclosed earlier in the week was five months pregnant. Bristol Palin's 18-year-old boyfriend and apparent fiance, Levi Johnston, was seated with them.

McCain shook up the presidential race by picking Palin, a little-known governor less than two years in office. Since then, a bright spotlight has been trained on the life and record of the Republican governor who has bucked the state's political establishment.

Days after Palin made her debut on the national stage with McCain, the campaign announced her unmarried daughter's pregnancy. Other disclosures followed, including that a private attorney is authorized to spend $95,000 of state money to defend her against accusations of abuse of power and that Palin sought pork-barrel projects for her city and state, contrary to her reformist image.

"Our family has the same ups and downs as any other ... the same challenges and the same joys," she said.

Noting that the couple's oldest son, Track, 19, was shipping out to Iraq in eight days with the Army infantry, Palin praised McCain as "a true profile in courage, and people like that are hard to come by."

"He's a man who wore the uniform of this country for 22 years, and refused to break faith with those troops in Iraq who have now brought victory within sight. And as the mother of one of those troops, that is exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief," she said.

Largely unknown outside her home state, Palin told the convention: "I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids' public education better," she said, speaking of her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population of about 6,500.

"When I ran for city council, I didn't need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too," she said.

Before becoming governor, Palin served as mayor of Wasilla, she recounted, adding: "And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities."

In another barb directed at the Illinois Democrat, Palin said: "Here's how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

A former TV sportscaster, Palin delivered her speech in a firm, cheerful voice. It was her first chance to introduce and define herself to the American public and to explain to fellow Republicans how her experiences as Alaska governor would help galvanize the GOP ticket.

She strongly endorsed more oil exploration and drilling. "Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems _ as if we all didn't know that already. But the fact that drilling won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all," she said.

Palin has been an aggressive advocate for drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, while McCain opposes drilling there. That difference was not touched on in the speech.

Mc Cain will probably blame the media for having their cameras on when he made these very candid admissions to them. Check out this rare example of straight talk.

For the first time in a while I am starting to feel proud of certain memebers of the media. They are doing their job and firing back. I know they get a lot of criticism, especially in these pages. But they deserve some credit here. Keep up the good work!

I found it interesting that Palin had to introduce herself to the nation last evening all by herself.

My hope is that the media will continue to investigate and report any facts involved with the potential abuse of power charges levied against her and any other violations of the past. Rarely does one that exhibits this type of behavior exert inappropriate influence only once in a career.

By example, the NYT had a wonderful editorial that took McSame to task for selecting Palin and gave the facts used to reach that opinion:

The one thing she should NOT do...blame the media. Deal with it. Everyone other candidate has been under media scrutiny. Why are people asking quesitons about her family? Her daughter? About who she is? About why she is under investigation? Sarah Palin, you might be my country's next vice-president and it is my right to know what kind of issues you could be bring to the Nation's Capitol. It isn't the media's job to love you. It's their job to report the news.
Funny, she poked fun at Hillary for complaining about sexism in the media. "It's like the pot calling the kettle black." Get over yourself and the pristine image you are trying to maintain. Freedom of speech is still allowed in this country. You either roll with the punches or you get knocked out cold.

Basically it works like this = what is factual and true, the opposite POV is taken by the Republicans. For example – Drilling in Alaska is good for the environment.
The Republicans have perfected the tactics of Reverse Psychology! It's absolutely fascinating and yet completely annoying to witness!! The worst of it has only begun. The corporate media works for the Republicans, so they set up Palin to attack and blame the media for taking a "liberal" view. All of us who are critical of this catastrophe of an administration are "Angry Liberals.” We can’t possibly be rational and concerned about real issues. I guess we are just angry like a pit bull with and without lipstick.

McCain is blaming the media. Good spin but no one but McCain is that naive. This woman comes out of no where and her name was never mentioned by any republican so the media has a right to dig and raise questions. If Palin complains we should remind her she called Hillary Clinton a whiner when Hillary felt the media was particularly hard on her. Palin is no Hillary and she does not have the strength to be on the top of the ticket should something happen to McSAME! As for we Hillary supporters, we are on board with Obama. Hillary is not a woman who would want her supporters to go to the republicans, she is above that and devoted to her party. The PUMA's need to respect what Hillary stood for and follow her lead and support Obama. CHANGE is what the Democrats stand for. The media should do their job and dig deeper. There are some out there who have breaking news.

doesn't being president of the Harvard Law Review count for something....compared to the PTA....why have we all forgotten that accomplishment? Its pretty impressive.

who knows main stream media may ask her serious questions at the deabate instead of throwing softballs.

The media cannot give in to this tactic. She will attack anyone she can. But will she stand up for anything????? She is staying away from the media because there are questions she cannot answer. If she's so tough, then she should be more than willing to say so...take the hard questions.

She is blaming the media so she does not have to be questioned by the media. She can hide behind Rove's skirt tails and need now answer the media's questions. While she can do a good job reading red meat speech with a smile off of a teleprompter, she is in no way able to answer MSM's questions about issues. MSM's questions may also uncover an Achilles heal,

O's people and surrogates should demand that she come out from behind Rove's skirt tail and answer the questions. If she became God forbid VP or God double-forbid President, would she hide behind Rove's skirt tail to avoid a confrontation with Putin, for example.

I have to say I second your comments.

I guess beauty contest winners don't really understand what community organizers do. Do you suppose she knows what Habitat for Humanity is?

Johnny got a pitbull with lipstick, but with a questionable past. She is tough, she can read from a teleprompter, etc. - but Americans need more than sarcasm and snide remarks.

Not a single speaker last night had a solution to help America - just the same old tear the other guy apart. McCain speaks tonight and we know what his plans are - he voted with Bush over 90% of the time.

I have donated to Obama and will do so again today.

In a Rep mind, winning a beauty contest trumps being president of the Harvard Law Review and a sportscaster surpasses a community organizer. Up is down and black is white. And to think, as governor, she line item vetoed funds for unwed mothers and special needs children. And she campaigned as a supporter of the "Bridge to Nowhere" before she was against it (but she did get to keep most of the money earmarked for the bridge).

Reps are hypocrites. Socialize the costs and privatize the profits. There's tons of dirt but the right-wing controlled "liberal" mainstream media is largely AWOL.

So yesterday -- the media was to blame for everything
after the speech?

She's an angel sent from heaven to absolve us of our sins.

There is something wrong with Americans who bought that and buy her. She stands up there spouting she is against insider Washington -- she is not one of "them" and yet, who wrote her speech? Who will be her trainers in Republican Divisive Tactics Bootcamp 101?

Certainly it will be those very same insiders she claims not to be like or part of.

20 Years ago while Barak Obama was helping people find jobs and become self-sufficient the Republican Candidate for VP was in a contestant in a Beauty Contest.

I'm no Alaskan Hockey Mom but I'm a bit more intelligent than the media and the Republican Party believe me to be. I don't make my decisions about who I vote for based on a scripted commercial starring a middle aged Pretty Lady.

I'm a registered Independent who always planned to vote for Barak Obama but this morning, I made my first donation (despite not really being able to afford to do so because of the mess the current Republican Administration has made of the economy) and plan becoming more active in the Obama/Biden campaign.
