John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin puts his campaign firmly on track toward a hard-edged drive to mobilize the GOP's conservative base, threatening to erase what remains of his centrist maverick image and his appeal to moderate and independent voters.

The McCain of days past who attacked leaders of the Christian right as "agents of intolerance," who voted against "budget busting" Bush tax cuts, who broke ranks with his party on issues from gay rights to campaign finance reform, is now a faded memory.

What remains unclear is the extent to which McCain actively participated in the transformation of his political persona, and the extent to which he has been passive -- pushed and shoved by aides, partisan pressures, and external forces.

McCain and Palin now head a ticket that is emerging as more red-bloodedly conservative than Bush-Cheney in 2004 -- when conservatism would have appeared to have reached its zenith -- with a platform substantially further to the right on issues ranging from education to immigration.

McCain will be campaigning on a party platform which produced
ecstatic praise from some of his harshest critics on the right. Donald J. Devine, Vice Chairman of the American Conservative Union, declared, "It's certainly a vast improvement over the 2004 document."

Back in February, when McCain first emerged as the likely nominee, Devine suggested that it might be better to lose on November 4 than to win with McCain:

"Conservatism is not about winning elections. That is for the political parties. Indeed, sometimes it is good to lose an election."

The current platform eliminates 2004 language calling for a "humane" immigration policy with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and instead denounces even the prospect of amnesty.

While the 2004 platform praised the Bush administration's increased federal spending on education, the 2008 document declares, "Although the Constitution assigns the federal government no role in local education, Washington's authority over the nation's schools has increased dramatically."

The Arizona senator, who once took pride in his open communication with the press and in his willingness to take hostile questions with a smile, is now battling the media, refusing all queries regarding Palin's vetting, killing an interview with CNN in retribution for tough questioning of a campaign aide, and cutting access for the New York Times after it published a negative story.

The choice of Palin demonstrates that McCain is rolling the dice on a strategy he and some of his top aides once explicitly rejected. Palin's selection suggests that McCain is downplaying the importance of moderate to liberal suburbanites who were shifting toward the Democratic Party as Christian conservative influence permeated the GOP. One of McCain's major advantages in the past has been the belief (unsubstantiated) of many pro-choice voters that he shared their views. With Palin at his side, the campaign's strategy is now directed at building enthusiasm among voters who seek the complete prohibition of abortion, who want creationism taught in the public schools, and who aim to increase the role of religion in government.

Palin's demonstrated appeal to the religious right has set in motion a political logic pushing McCain to aggressively demonize Barack Obama. The more McCain abandons his centrist past, the more he will, of necessity, turn to those wedge issues which have historically worked to fracture the Democratic coalition, building turnout among conservative white voters.

This logic, in turn, intensifies pressure on McCain and the GOP to focus ever more intensely on Obama's liberal liabilities, his past membership in Jeremiah Wright's Trinity Church, his association with unrepentant 1960s bomber William Ayers, and on whatever other similar themes can be developed.

As McCain brushes aside his past flirtations with liberalism, the process to watch will be the willingness of his new allies in the conservative wing of the GOP to forget his 2001-2 'threat' (feint?) to jump ship from the Republian Party, his pride in co-sponsoring bills with Russell Feingold and Ted Kennedy, and his warning that conservative religiosity posed the danger of making Republicans "an endangered species."

Fortunately for McCain, as November 4 approaches, the political memory of his new supporters gets shorter and shorter.

It is sadly ironic that the one candidate who might have saved the Republican party from itself has chosen instead to appeal the basest instincts (rather than ideas, that is) of the very same party "base" tht has turned it into a refuge for corrupt, incompetent zealots. In his embrace of George Bush (95 percent of the time), the old "maverick" has made it clear that he is willing to sacrifice his principles and his reputation for the sake of drinking up the power he has so long lusted after. In doing so, he has rendered both himself and his party irrelevant to the future of the nation.

PITBULL WITH LIPSTICK...WOW, self portrait, proof positive that the hate mongering still lives within the Republican Party. Divisive statements which will drive a wedge between Americans, red meat politics, the very political landscape that makes up our present situation in Washington today. Vote McCain for more of the same....

The media is applauding the Repugs for keeping the pit pull with lipstick on a short leash. McCain is indignant that the media dares to ask questions about his pick of the litter. Andrea Mitchell remarked, with glee, that this tactic worked for Nixon in 1972. The reporters and commentators are salivating for McPalin to throw them a bone.

I think the 'community organizer' sarcasm last night by Palin and others diminished what they were trying to do on Monday night by promoting all the community organizers across the country who were trying to put together relief packages for Gustav victims.

Another chance where the Republicans just want it both ways.

If you want more of the same, vote McCain

Their open, enthusiastic mockery of those who are working to help people in poor communities improve their lives was truly shocking -- even coming from smug Republicans. I hope that video bite gets played incessantly over the next several days, but suspect it won't even get a second look from the MSM.

Based on Gov. Palin's speech, this ticket will turn to winning through division, not unity. I know this kind of person and this kind of ideology. There is an unwillingness to talk through differences to find common values and common goals because they already know what is best for everyone. They tend to judge and even condemn, implicitly, those who are "of the world," and not like them. Whether Sen. McCain did this intentionally or inadvertently his campaign has completely shifted gears. It is now retrogressive. A post-partisan America that had been possible with Obama and McCain as the two presidential choices has been turned on its ear. Don't be fooled by the pretty face and the charming, messy narrative. This person and this speech have energized and empowered the conservative base. This is now their time. They will have expectations. And I could be wrong. This team could be more open-minded and more able to bring other points of view, other backgrounds, other ideologies together to find effective solutions. I just don't know, but it makes me nervous. Warning- For those with moderate and progressive views, or those who embrace diversity and desire equity, please close your eyes and really listen. And don't forget that Alaska is rich in oil. There is ideology to be fulfilled, but there is also a lot of money to be made. Sen. Obama has his work cut out for him.

McCain’s Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin has declared war on the media and I hope they are up to this challenge. McCain has now turned on his friends in the media and using his vengeful VP selection as his weapon.

This woman who has spent less than a week in the media spotlight, who has thus far made herself completely unavailable for interviews, has blasted the media with both barrels, deriding them for daring to cover her and the revelations that continue to emerge about this untested, unknown and unvetted candidate.

Ms. Pailn brilliantly accepting her nomination for VP but this is not American Idol does the Presidency. McCain’s shot-gun marriage to Palin and her 2-day course on to ‘How To Be President’ only proves its more about the same. Shooting with both barrels – sexism and family values – this Republican ticket has dared the MSM to serve the people. With Reform now being their new message against Obama’s consistent message for Change, the Republican’s have waged a tricky attack on everyone’s basic intelligence blurring the reality with the facts.

Who is Sarah Palin? And further more who is the make-over maverick John McCain? Are we all (MSM included) going to pay for 4 more years like the last disgraceful 8 and give up on the truth? This presidential race is between Obama and McCain but McCampaign’s war is against the media. Republican talking-points have our backs up against the wall. Let the vetting begin.

Great speeches. I'm still laughing. Gulianni worst speaker ever...EVER. So many lies and fluff no tough questions being answered. Palin made fun McCain by making fun of Obama.Biden. And I am glad. It looks like this could be a landslide in the works for the Democrats this year barring something crazy happening. Palin is not qualified for VP nevermind Governor. Arnold has been a disaster economically for California. And he is a moderate. And since the economy is in the tanks and McCain will doing nothing but make it worse.....I say thank you GOP for being delusional.

not impressed. Now can we get her in some of those grilling interviews that Obama has gone thru for the last 18 months, why are they hiding her from the media and in the same breath complaining about the media because of the facts they are finding in Alaska about this former beauty queen wanna be.

The MSM better not back off, not this time not this year. This card is always played by Republicans, same old politics.

It is so interesting to watch and listen to liberals. When repbulicans say things that strike home, the libs start chanting, its about the issues. Redirect. Redirect.

A great night for conservatives. A bad night for liberals.

Sarah drove home some undeniable facts and the libs coming out spewing "lets talk about the issues" all of a sudden.

Roll on John and Sarah!!

I don't remember her talking about the issues. Did we see the same speech?

It's interesting that you contrast liberals with Republicans (or, "repbulicans"). Either you talk about liberals vs. conservatives, or Democrats vs. Republicans -- do not conflate the antinomies.

This GOP ticket is a slap in the face of Americans, liberals and conservatives alike. McCain is no longer McCain and Palin is exactly who she's always been: an unqualified, self-serving hack. What is the appeal of a "hockey mom" anyway? I didn't grow up in hockey territory, but if hockey moms are anything like soccer moms, I don't want her anywhere near Washington DC.

P. S. Please cite two facts, and their objective sources, that Palin mentioned last night. The fact that McCain was a POW doesn't count.

Is anyone here familiar with the term shade tree machanic? Thats the guy that stands down the street from the real machanic shop and offers to fix your car at a lower price than the real mechanic.
He has no licsence of anykind. yYou have no knowledge of anyone else's car he has worked on.
You let him "fix" your car, the next thing you know you have to end up going to the real mechanic anyways, and pay even more. Not only has thios fraud not fixed your car, he has actually messed up somethingelse because he was not a mechanic in the first place.

Here is another one in beautician terms:

Sign on shop down the street: I fix $5 haircuts!!! (Democrats)

It's both amazing and scary how the RNP has turned a sow's ear into a silk purse in less than two short weeks. And along the way fended off a barrage of findings of investigative journalism revealing the actor behind the stage facade being created on a seat of the pants, through it together basis. Never in my life have I seen anything so astonishing bizarre and outright fraudulent as this Republican theatrical enterprise - it's scary in the sense of how gullible a large segment of the American public remains, how easily they buy into a contrived "public myth" obscuring not-so-hidden agendas, almost out of a science fiction film.
Let's keep the cameras rolling and the internet activity buzzing - there's a documentary in all of this, a sort of an Inventing, Masquerading, and Selling of a Candidate from out of nowhere - someone with an obscure past facilitating inventing a biography. How sick. McCain's more of a weakling than we'd supposed, although his career in the Senate has been that of a lacky for Big Pharm and other special interest groups.
