Palin

John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin puts his campaign firmly on track toward a hard-edged drive to mobilize the GOP's conservative base, threatening to erase what remains of his centrist maverick image and his appeal to moderate and independent voters.

The McCain of days past who attacked leaders of the Christian right as "agents of intolerance," who voted against "budget busting" Bush tax cuts, who broke ranks with his party on issues from gay rights to campaign finance reform, is now a faded memory.

What remains unclear is the extent to which McCain actively participated in the transformation of his political persona, and the extent to which he has been passive -- pushed and shoved by aides, partisan pressures, and external forces.

McCain and Palin now head a ticket that is emerging as more red-bloodedly conservative than Bush-Cheney in 2004 -- when conservatism would have appeared to have reached its zenith -- with a platform substantially further to the right on issues ranging from education to immigration.

McCain will be campaigning on a party platform which produced
ecstatic praise from some of his harshest critics on the right. Donald J. Devine, Vice Chairman of the American Conservative Union, declared, "It's certainly a vast improvement over the 2004 document."

Back in February, when McCain first emerged as the likely nominee, Devine suggested that it might be better to lose on November 4 than to win with McCain:

"Conservatism is not about winning elections. That is for the political parties. Indeed, sometimes it is good to lose an election."

The current platform eliminates 2004 language calling for a "humane" immigration policy with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and instead denounces even the prospect of amnesty.

While the 2004 platform praised the Bush administration's increased federal spending on education, the 2008 document declares, "Although the Constitution assigns the federal government no role in local education, Washington's authority over the nation's schools has increased dramatically."

The Arizona senator, who once took pride in his open communication with the press and in his willingness to take hostile questions with a smile, is now battling the media, refusing all queries regarding Palin's vetting, killing an interview with CNN in retribution for tough questioning of a campaign aide, and cutting access for the New York Times after it published a negative story.

Story continues below

The choice of Palin demonstrates that McCain is rolling the dice on a strategy he and some of his top aides once explicitly rejected. Palin's selection suggests that McCain is downplaying the importance of moderate to liberal suburbanites who were shifting toward the Democratic Party as Christian conservative influence permeated the GOP. One of McCain's major advantages in the past has been the belief (unsubstantiated) of many pro-choice voters that he shared their views. With Palin at his side, the campaign's strategy is now directed at building enthusiasm among voters who seek the complete prohibition of abortion, who want creationism taught in the public schools, and who aim to increase the role of religion in government.

Palin's demonstrated appeal to the religious right has set in motion a political logic pushing McCain to aggressively demonize Barack Obama. The more McCain abandons his centrist past, the more he will, of necessity, turn to those wedge issues which have historically worked to fracture the Democratic coalition, building turnout among conservative white voters.

This logic, in turn, intensifies pressure on McCain and the GOP to focus ever more intensely on Obama's liberal liabilities, his past membership in Jeremiah Wright's Trinity Church, his association with unrepentant 1960s bomber William Ayers, and on whatever other similar themes can be developed.

As McCain brushes aside his past flirtations with liberalism, the process to watch will be the willingness of his new allies in the conservative wing of the GOP to forget his 2001-2 'threat' (feint?) to jump ship from the Republian Party, his pride in co-sponsoring bills with Russell Feingold and Ted Kennedy, and his warning that conservative religiosity posed the danger of making Republicans "an endangered species."

Fortunately for McCain, as November 4 approaches, the political memory of his new supporters gets shorter and shorter.

Print Obama's speech and Palin's speech, i reread both last night and it so refreshing to see that Obama had a positive message with hope, it is sad to see the Republicans just mocking people with negitive comments with no hope what so ever.

Pretty stark difference, indeed. Inspiration, Hope, Innovation vs. Fear, mocking, insults. I am so, so ready to live life inspired by President Obama

that is all the Republicans got.... fear and insults... they have no solutions... they have wrecked a country that was handed to them in very good shape by Clinton...

The contrast is just unbelievable. Obama talks about guiding America through its difficult times and ensuring that working Americans aren't short-changed. And then you see Palin mocking community organisers - some of the hardest working and most selfless Americans - by claiming that they have no "responsibilities" at all. And that's just despicable.

I saw Sen. Biden on Good Morning America shortly after 7 am EDT. He was very carefully, yet forceably critical of what Palin presented in her speech but more on what she didn't, noting she said nothing as to the middle-class crunch, heatlh care and energy costs now but plenty of 'drill-drill-drill' and belittling of Obama. He also noted that his wife worked, went to Graduate school part time, was a mother to the children and a wife to a high level politican and did it, showing respect to such women. To me he said things I was thinking of and agree with. Palin is not qualified to be VP in any way shape or form.

If she wasn't so full of BS, I'd almost say she's in the wrong party. She wants to battle Washington "insiders," she re-distributes oil wealth, her husband is a proud member of the steelworkers union (the crowd cheered that ?!!!) and her kid is knocked up! Sounds like a democrat to me! Republicans are clearly delusional.

It is great that we know a lot about Palin family.....

and we know she can make witty high school level jabs at her opponents...

But she gave no compelling reason to vote for her....

How does she and her party tend to fix the very serious and large problems that this country has in front of it and that her party has largely created or made worse (econonmy, healthcare, declining real incomes, broken military, more threatening foreign threats, etc.)?

We heard absolutely nothing about what the Republican solutions are... we heard her talk about change and changing Washington, but what exactly is she going to change and what are her and her parties solutions....? we heard zero substance....

It is easy to say the Dems will increase taxes, but how are the Republicans going to solve the huge deficit problems that this country faces, that her party has created in the last 8 yrs? If you do not raise taxes then how do you shrink the deficit? If she says cuts in spending, then lets here about those cuts...

Someone should also fact check her speech as there seemed to be a lot of nonsense in it... lies and exaggerations... blame the media for asking very legitimate questions about here qualifications to be President, about her hypocracy, etc. is just Republican BS....

palin is mccain's bridge to limbaugh- now he has the talk radio base with palin channeling and reinforcing the talking points - something he needed going into the convention, timing the announcement to teh friday libaugh show, and now the talk radio blowhards have their dittoheads frothing at the media.

obama may have wright but mccain/palin has limbaugh and the obama camp needs to make that connection clear and often

How is it even possible to vote "present" 130 times? Obama is a cipher.

What is interesting to observe is that the Republicans are willing to
tie their already fledgling hopes for the presidency to this woman.
They could have dropped her--but they're not going to drop her.
They're sticking with her, defending her, trying to pass her
overwhelming mediocrity off as legitimate experience. I believe the
Republican Party is delusional. Clinically speaking.

I can't believe it. Because Palin delevered a good speech written for her by Bush-Rove divisive dark operators, that suddenly eliminates the concern we should all have about her qualification to be a potential Commander-in-Chief? If the media caves with with feelings of gift, we are done as a democracy and the most powerful nation on earth. At its best, the media stands a sentinel of freedon.

No we are not , we just need to elect people that respect the freedom of our press, and will do something about these propaganda laden outlets.

Its a shame when one has to turn to foreign networks to get the true story of whats going on in your own country.

What was so fun... if you care about your country then you must realize that that speech was total crap....

Great to know about her family and there small town adventures, but what are her solutions and philosophies in fixing the issues faced by this country? Great to critize taxes, but how will she fix the huge budget deficit for example? Great to send here children off to war, but how does she stop the hatred of the Arab world toward the U.S....

There was no compelling reason to vote for her... coming from a small town, having five kids, and a union husband is not a reason to vote for someone...

Half-baked Alaska. Palin as Potemkiness. Her speech, described by Wolf Blitzer as "as a star is born", was divisive, petty, and high-schoolish in content and delivery. The pointing finger, the lip curl and the mockery. I was stunned that the coverage was in any way favorable. She may have energized the Republican Al-Qaeda ("the base") especially the delegates who on this Wednesday night thought they were at their mega church rally hearing a right-wing nut job incantation (from Sarah the Wasliia Assemby of God delegate). The jingoistic incantation of USA, USA from all white delegates at strange moments in the speech was unsettling, and really scary. She truly was the worst person in the world last night and CNN, MSNBC and PBS are spooked or craven. She has failed as a mother (no college track for "Track", or apparently for teenage PG Bristol) and abandoned her(?) young Down's children child to the care of others. She has abused power not unlike Bush loyalist-zealots and strikes me as a shallow ultra-conservative zealot perfectly fit to fight for creationism teaching at school board PTA meetings. We are better than this. I hope.

I couldn't agree with you more. As I prepare with my 18-year old son to apply and go off to college next fall I can't help but feel sorry for the two teens that have been forced into this very public situation that is most likely not allowing them the opportunity to make similar choices. There was no talk of long term opportunities for our youth regarding education.

Sarah Palin can dish it out, but she can't take it. Truly disappoint in her sarcasm and diviseness. There is no reason for Obama or Biden to walk on eggshells around her, and as Biden said "respect" her. She did not show any respect, she does not deserve any. Let her have it.

Not only did she belittle Obama and the entire democratic party, she took aim at people who work in the community who are trying to make life better for those less fortunate. I was embarrased watching this woman acting like a brawling man.
