John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin puts his campaign firmly on track toward a hard-edged drive to mobilize the GOP's conservative base, threatening to erase what remains of his centrist maverick image and his appeal to moderate and independent voters.

The McCain of days past who attacked leaders of the Christian right as "agents of intolerance," who voted against "budget busting" Bush tax cuts, who broke ranks with his party on issues from gay rights to campaign finance reform, is now a faded memory.

What remains unclear is the extent to which McCain actively participated in the transformation of his political persona, and the extent to which he has been passive -- pushed and shoved by aides, partisan pressures, and external forces.

McCain and Palin now head a ticket that is emerging as more red-bloodedly conservative than Bush-Cheney in 2004 -- when conservatism would have appeared to have reached its zenith -- with a platform substantially further to the right on issues ranging from education to immigration.

McCain will be campaigning on a party platform which produced
ecstatic praise from some of his harshest critics on the right. Donald J. Devine, Vice Chairman of the American Conservative Union, declared, "It's certainly a vast improvement over the 2004 document."

Back in February, when McCain first emerged as the likely nominee, Devine suggested that it might be better to lose on November 4 than to win with McCain:

"Conservatism is not about winning elections. That is for the political parties. Indeed, sometimes it is good to lose an election."

The current platform eliminates 2004 language calling for a "humane" immigration policy with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and instead denounces even the prospect of amnesty.

While the 2004 platform praised the Bush administration's increased federal spending on education, the 2008 document declares, "Although the Constitution assigns the federal government no role in local education, Washington's authority over the nation's schools has increased dramatically."

The Arizona senator, who once took pride in his open communication with the press and in his willingness to take hostile questions with a smile, is now battling the media, refusing all queries regarding Palin's vetting, killing an interview with CNN in retribution for tough questioning of a campaign aide, and cutting access for the New York Times after it published a negative story.

Story continues below

The choice of Palin demonstrates that McCain is rolling the dice on a strategy he and some of his top aides once explicitly rejected. Palin's selection suggests that McCain is downplaying the importance of moderate to liberal suburbanites who were shifting toward the Democratic Party as Christian conservative influence permeated the GOP. One of McCain's major advantages in the past has been the belief (unsubstantiated) of many pro-choice voters that he shared their views. With Palin at his side, the campaign's strategy is now directed at building enthusiasm among voters who seek the complete prohibition of abortion, who want creationism taught in the public schools, and who aim to increase the role of religion in government.

Palin's demonstrated appeal to the religious right has set in motion a political logic pushing McCain to aggressively demonize Barack Obama. The more McCain abandons his centrist past, the more he will, of necessity, turn to those wedge issues which have historically worked to fracture the Democratic coalition, building turnout among conservative white voters.

This logic, in turn, intensifies pressure on McCain and the GOP to focus ever more intensely on Obama's liberal liabilities, his past membership in Jeremiah Wright's Trinity Church, his association with unrepentant 1960s bomber William Ayers, and on whatever other similar themes can be developed.

As McCain brushes aside his past flirtations with liberalism, the process to watch will be the willingness of his new allies in the conservative wing of the GOP to forget his 2001-2 'threat' (feint?) to jump ship from the Republian Party, his pride in co-sponsoring bills with Russell Feingold and Ted Kennedy, and his warning that conservative religiosity posed the danger of making Republicans "an endangered species."

Fortunately for McCain, as November 4 approaches, the political memory of his new supporters gets shorter and shorter.

hey Let-Us-Praylin,

"here's a little news flash..." there are more REAL PROBLEMS within BO's community that he tackled than there are in SEWARD'S ICEBOX, a state with one-sixth the population of Chicago, and the only state in the union that is benefitting from high oil prices

McCain and Palin can't beat the media too. They act as they are in a war with fellow americans. Just divisiness, pure hatred and vitriol. This will backfire on them. Too many people are hurting, we don't want this divisive Karl Rove, Right Wing Crap. And if anybody in rural america falls for this, if you think you are poor now, just look back in four years if you vote these 2 in office. Not to mention reinacting the draft to take your sons and daughters away from home. So I guess she is going to kick everybody's behind in Washington, Kick the media to the curve, but somehow she will be respected to work across party lines. She just disrespected every potential colleague she might have to work with. This dog won't hunt. You havent' seen community organizing yet. See you on Nov 4.

I'd rather support an authentic, honest COMMUNITY ORGANIZER than some poser reformer who actually is not a reformer.

Yeah it will be interesting until the rubber meets the road. I can't wait until the actual debates start.
I m still waiting to hear what her position is on the issues. All that fluff and I still come away with what her positions are and how is she going to do something to help Americans like myself.

On November 4th, Sarah Palin (and everyone who laughed at her disrespectful and derisive comments about Obama) will discover how powerful COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS can be. McPalin cannot match Obama's grass-roots organization because Obama's volunteers are fueled by an authentic desire to work tirelessly for a candidate who truly embodies CHANGE, not by a candidate who changes his "maverick" mind on so many issues and chooses a NOBODY from the political minor leagues of Alaska. Take heart, fellow democrats, and mark my rhyming words:

So far, it's been pretty smooth sailin'
For Captain McCain and first mate Palin.
But if they don't do a hell of a lot more
To rally MIDshipmen to pick up an oar,
The Obama Tsunami will wash them ashore
On November 4.

As an Independent who might have voted for McCain in 2000, I’ve been hoping for another opportunity to identify with his ideology through a coherent expression of where he would take our country. Tonight’s GOP-showcasing of Mrs. Palin was a dud for me. I am sorry, but McCain-Palin is not where this country needs to be.

Once again, the worst of Karl Rove’s Republican party was showcased tonight. It’s that ever-widening sliver of the Republicans, their so-called ‘base,” that scares me. It’s the flagrant hypocrisy, counterproductive arrogance, and unabashed self-righteousness that they just can’t seem to contain that undermines any creditability they might otherwise have with Independents who—unlike their Limbaugh dittoheads—can think for ourselves.

Since the Reagan years, the Republicans have degenerated into a party all too willing to defile the Hillary’s of our world for not wanting to “stay home and bake cookies.” Led by thoughtless buffoons like Limbaugh and Hannity, they’ve relished every opportunity to insult the Dems for daring to think compassionately with respect to issues like dysfunctional domestic relationships, out-of-wedlock pregnancies, etc. But now—now that it has suddenly become politically expedient for them to extend such “liberties” to their new, frontier-spirited rock star—they somehow expect the rest of us (who have generally always appreciated these virtues) to accept their sudden transformation without questioning their genuine understanding of what is really at stake here.

Will the GOP ever realize the absurdness of their contradictory, convenience-based behavior?

That "rock star" label really is true. I was reading some other news outlets.. more conservative ones.. and you could read the enthusiastic glee with which her snide comments were received. Adoration!!

Ms. Palin acknowledged that Hillary Clinton put 18,000,000 cracks in the glass ceiling.

I wonder how long it will take Ms. Palin to super-glue them all back into place, since that obviously is her mission.

The irony is that it took hard-working, nonjudgmental, compassionate women more than 30 years to get where we are today, and Ms. Palin and her policies are completely contrary to every issue concerning women's rights. In one fell swoop, she could end it all.

This is very serious, people. We've lost so much in the last eight years. If McCain/Palin win, we won't have anything left to lose.

A maverick wouldn't pick someone that fires up the base of his party to be his VP. A real maverick would pick a VP that defies them.

A maverick is someone who can be act like a wild card. They usually vote with their party but at times take strong positions against them on big issues. It basically is a political label that is supposed to conjure up images of rugged american individualism and fortitude. Their was a time when McCain did act like this, but these last few years he's been a slave of his party. The republicans are so intolerant of anyone that doesn't adhere strickly with the party line that the only way he could get his party's nomination was to fall in line too.

No need to apologize. In the US, a maverick is considered be one who bucks against their party when they feel the party is wrong. It's supposed to mean independent-minded, not beholden to a party line.

However, McCain doesn't strike me as much of a maverick anymore. He used to be, including standing up to President Reagan when he wanted to put troops in Lebanon. He was right about that, and credit to him for it. Even though I'm a Democrat, had it been McCain vs. Gore in 2000, my vote would have taken more consideration (maybe a second or two).

Since President Bush took office, however, McCain has been nowhere near a maverick. His VP pick is an effort to motivate the very base of his party, which is anything but a maverick move. Earlier, he was against Bush's tax cuts, now he wants to make them permanent. He's voted with Bush 90% of the time, including on the Military Commissions Act that allowed the CIA to torture captives, something McCain claims to be against. He also didn't endorse the bill earlier this year that strengthened veteran's benefits, but claims to be supporting the troops. He seems to support them while they're in combat, but they're on their own when they return.

There's a saying about that in politcis. "If two guys agree with each other all the time, one of them isn't necessary." He wants to continue Bush's policies. That's not being a maverick.

Why aren't there any articles about Giuliani's terrible insult to Muslims this evening?

Rudy's direct quote:
"For four days in Denver, the Democrats were afraid to use the term “Islamic terrorism.” I imagine they believe it is politically incorrect to say it. I think they believe they will insult someone. Please tell me, who they are insulting if they say, “Islamic terrorism.” They are insulting terrorists!"

The most offensive remark of the entire RNC.

I have listened to Palin debate and she is weak. She was humiliated up here debating Tony Knowles and Andres Halcro for governor. She did not have a grasp on any of the issues here in Alaska. It will be fun watching her go down.

I hope you're right, but it's important to remember that even if she was humiliated in the debates, she still won. Joe Biden should crush her, but sometimes that's not enough.

I live in Alaska and have heard Sarah Palin talk many times while campaigning. I have never heard her talk with such viciousness, ridicule and nastiness as I heard tonight. McCain and his staff have gotten a hold of her and are using her for their message. I guess I really didn't know her up here. At least she is being vetted now.
