Palin

John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin puts his campaign firmly on track toward a hard-edged drive to mobilize the GOP's conservative base, threatening to erase what remains of his centrist maverick image and his appeal to moderate and independent voters.

The McCain of days past who attacked leaders of the Christian right as "agents of intolerance," who voted against "budget busting" Bush tax cuts, who broke ranks with his party on issues from gay rights to campaign finance reform, is now a faded memory.

What remains unclear is the extent to which McCain actively participated in the transformation of his political persona, and the extent to which he has been passive -- pushed and shoved by aides, partisan pressures, and external forces.

McCain and Palin now head a ticket that is emerging as more red-bloodedly conservative than Bush-Cheney in 2004 -- when conservatism would have appeared to have reached its zenith -- with a platform substantially further to the right on issues ranging from education to immigration.

McCain will be campaigning on a party platform which produced
ecstatic praise from some of his harshest critics on the right. Donald J. Devine, Vice Chairman of the American Conservative Union, declared, "It's certainly a vast improvement over the 2004 document."

Back in February, when McCain first emerged as the likely nominee, Devine suggested that it might be better to lose on November 4 than to win with McCain:

"Conservatism is not about winning elections. That is for the political parties. Indeed, sometimes it is good to lose an election."

The current platform eliminates 2004 language calling for a "humane" immigration policy with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and instead denounces even the prospect of amnesty.

While the 2004 platform praised the Bush administration's increased federal spending on education, the 2008 document declares, "Although the Constitution assigns the federal government no role in local education, Washington's authority over the nation's schools has increased dramatically."

The Arizona senator, who once took pride in his open communication with the press and in his willingness to take hostile questions with a smile, is now battling the media, refusing all queries regarding Palin's vetting, killing an interview with CNN in retribution for tough questioning of a campaign aide, and cutting access for the New York Times after it published a negative story.

Story continues below

The choice of Palin demonstrates that McCain is rolling the dice on a strategy he and some of his top aides once explicitly rejected. Palin's selection suggests that McCain is downplaying the importance of moderate to liberal suburbanites who were shifting toward the Democratic Party as Christian conservative influence permeated the GOP. One of McCain's major advantages in the past has been the belief (unsubstantiated) of many pro-choice voters that he shared their views. With Palin at his side, the campaign's strategy is now directed at building enthusiasm among voters who seek the complete prohibition of abortion, who want creationism taught in the public schools, and who aim to increase the role of religion in government.

Palin's demonstrated appeal to the religious right has set in motion a political logic pushing McCain to aggressively demonize Barack Obama. The more McCain abandons his centrist past, the more he will, of necessity, turn to those wedge issues which have historically worked to fracture the Democratic coalition, building turnout among conservative white voters.

This logic, in turn, intensifies pressure on McCain and the GOP to focus ever more intensely on Obama's liberal liabilities, his past membership in Jeremiah Wright's Trinity Church, his association with unrepentant 1960s bomber William Ayers, and on whatever other similar themes can be developed.

As McCain brushes aside his past flirtations with liberalism, the process to watch will be the willingness of his new allies in the conservative wing of the GOP to forget his 2001-2 'threat' (feint?) to jump ship from the Republian Party, his pride in co-sponsoring bills with Russell Feingold and Ted Kennedy, and his warning that conservative religiosity posed the danger of making Republicans "an endangered species."

Fortunately for McCain, as November 4 approaches, the political memory of his new supporters gets shorter and shorter.

I had some respect for John McCain although I didn't think I would vote for him. Now I am sure I would not vote for him. This woman would have your head on a plate--she came across mean spirited and not smart. She was crass and the American people do not need that in a leader. No. if this is the Poseidon Adventure--she and McCain will sink us surely.

Giuliani was also mean. No to the Republican Party this time! You know what I don't care if Obama has never led anything--he's a better person.

Thank you for that, I tried to watch part of it and had to quit, it was too nauseating. So at what point did she talk about her secessionist plans for Alaska?

BRT, you are right. The Republican party doesn't get it this year. It isn't about the experience. It is about the character. Tonight, they tanked the character of John McCain. Yes, many decades ago, he was a war hero. That is respectful. However, MUCH time has passed. American needs a leader who can inspire a YOUNG generation to come up with new ideas. All I heard tonight was the same old fear and hate that the Republican party has used the past eight years.

We need a president who will listen to advisers. I've heard many times how stubborn McCain was. That isn't what we need in today's world. Terrorism is a complex topic as is the economy. We can't kill every terrorist, and tax cuts will not solve all economic problems. I think Bush 2000 - 2008 helped to prove this.

Yet, the Republicans have their head in the sand. If the American people don't see this, they are dumber than I thought. If McCain wins, I'm starting to wonder if the entire nation is home schooled....

Palin did a good job under pressure. She jumped to the national stage and did well. With that said, nothing she said gave me the confidence that she is ready to lead America.

McCain has a history of cancer, and would be the oldest sworn in president. We have to assume that she will lead the country at least for a short time in the next four years. Furthermore, she sounded a lot like the speakers in the Bush 2004 convention. I heard a lot of hate and sarcasm.

She tried to hit Obama hard. But Obama's strength isn't experience. His strengths are his ability to mediate situations, to reason, and make informed decisions based on advice from advisers. In case anyone missed the passed six years or so, the knee jerk reaction to invade Iraq wasn't the best decision.

I see the same policies: tax cuts for the richest Americans, shrink government (although no programs are EVER listed to be cut), and fight terrorists. Come on people, like any politician is going to eliminate the CIA, NSA, FBI, Homeland Security, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines. The real heroes protecting us are not the suits in Washington. Rather, they are government employees who continue to serve regardless of the administration. Tonight I heard that these government workers unions are in jeopardy.

More of the same. More hate. More greed. More condescension. Did anyone notice how she kept saying "I grew up with THOSE PEOPLE."

...and the sad thing... The speech writers must have wrote that in... Has the Republican party lost their mind? Maybe they hired Democrats to write the speech?

the makeover was nice, cleaned up the haircolor, decent cut and no more hoop earrings or big hair.
cindy took her in hand...she'll be looking east coast/dc in a jiffy. vocal coaching wasn't very good but not enough time - by the debate she'll sound eastern/dc too.

the little western star will get all exotic and eastern....and boring. how long before she's in a pantsuit?

It doesn't matter what she does with her appearance, she's still a snakey traitor underneath it all.

of course the republican audience LOVES palin.
waaay more than they love mccain.
finally someone who'd completely ban abortion.
and our comments about mccain's age only make
them love her more. maybe she'd not only be a token
conservative on the ticket ...there's a realistic chance
she'd be the president ....

Well as much as I cannot stand the administration of George W Bush and Dick Cheney...I gotta say they never screwed around on their spouses.

Now we know why John McCain described Sarah Palin as his "Soulmate"

...Until someone pisses her off. Then she's going to go ballistic. Just like her "Boss," McCain. Two thermonuclear tempers, just what we need in a more volatile world.

(Parenthetically, I don't think Sarah actually cares a fig for John McCain. The look on her face and her body language when he congratulated here tonight was one of total disdain: "You smelly old man, you don't get it that I am the Anointed -- and I _will_ be President!")

Sarcasm doesn't fly with most people...it is very unattractive and shows little wit or intelligence. What is her education level?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:21 AM on 09/04/2008

R u kidding me? You libs only know sarcasm and name calling. I often wonder what the average education level is of the people on this blog for the very same reason. Her wit was sharp and cutting and truthful and by the way very funny from my perspective.

Not concerned at all.... I'm looking forward to seeing her unscripted....hopefully America will have that chance. I have nothing against her .... but, after viewing her "governing" record, she's just not VP material. Look for the facts, not the hype.....An independent review in 2007 by the Pew Center places Alaska in the bottom nine states in the country. She may have 20 mos of real legislative experience, but I am looking forward to hearing her defend her less than glowing reord of accomplishments during those 20 mos. as Gov. of Alaska. One well delivered and scripted speech does not a Vice Pres. of the US make. Rhetoric is empty words...check the data for the facts.

I saw more of the same. More oil. More playing to the minority, extremist Evangelical so-called Christian base. More hate. More greed. More condescension. More lies about tax cuts. More negativity. My wife made a comment, and she is not political, that the difference between the Democrats and Republicans this year is how the Republicans are going negative.

Palin is a younger, better looking Bush. She is from a state that does not represent America. How many states get oil revenue? Well, Bush claimed to be from Texas. I think that there may be some oil there.

Abstinence only is not the solution to teen pregnancy. I think Palin's daughter is an example of that. Please don't give me a hard time about using her daughter as an example. Palin brought that poor baby into the middle of a loud convention in the middle of the night. When she uses her family, they are open to criticism.

Quite frankly, I'm sick of black or white politics. The world is mostly gray. Obama gets that. The Republican party does not. Whew, over their head.

I would say most if not all states get MINERAL royalties, oil being among the most well known. Ask Al Gore about his ol' zinc mine.

Question: Since John McCain strolled on stage tonight and a roll-call vote was taken to officially make him the Republican nominee, can he legally accept any more campaign contributions?

More importantly, Is there any way to know WHEN a contribution is made to a campaign? I can see millions of dollars in donations coming in after tonight's speech by Palin. It would be a shame if he couldn't accept all that money... :)
