I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Peggy Noonan

Thanks to an unexpected misadventure with a live microphone on the set of MSNBC, we now now know exactly what former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan (and former McCain advisor Mike Murphy) thinks about the decision to put Sarah Palin on the ticket:

MURPHY: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state government work. Angler, Whitman, Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. And these guys, this is all how you want to (inaudible) this race. You know, just run it up. And it's not gonna work.

NOONAN: It's over.

MURPHY: Still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

NOONAN: I saw Kay this morning

MURPHY: They're all bummed out. I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

NOONAN: The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives and (inaudible) the picture.

MURPHY: Yeah, but what's the narrative?

NOONAN: Every time the Republicans do that because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at and they blow it.

MURPHY: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism and this is cynical.

[WATCH, here.]

Now, the only question is: "What was Peggy Noonan thinking when she filed this column for the Wall Street Journal this morning? In it, she refers to Palin as a "a Hail Mary pass," a tactic that often fails to work, but "when they do they're a thing of beauty and a joy forever." Beauty? Joy? Forever? Forever didn't seem to outlast the afternoon!

[Noonan echoed the "Hail Mary" line on Morning Joe today.]

Noonan goes on:

Gut: The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work. It's not going to be a little successful or a little not; it's not going to be a wash. She is either going to be magic or one of history's accidents. She is either going to be brilliant and groundbreaking, or will soon be the target of unattributed quotes by bitter staffers shifting blame in all the Making of the President 2008 books. Of which there should be plenty, as we've never had a year like this, with the fabulous freak of a campaign.

More immediately and seriously on Palin:

Because she jumbles up so many cultural categories, because she is a feminist not in the Yale Gender Studies sense but the How Do I Reload This Thang way, because she is a woman who in style, history, moxie and femininity is exactly like a normal American feminist and not an Abstract Theory feminist; because she wears makeup and heels and eats mooseburgers and is Alaska Tough, as Time magazine put it; because she is conservative, and pro-2nd Amendment and pro-life; and because conservatives can smell this sort of thing -- who is really one of them and who is not -- and will fight to the death for one of their beleaguered own; because of all of this she is a real and present danger to the American left, and to the Obama candidacy.

She could become a transformative political presence.

Shrewdly, Noonan plays it pretty coy, here, adopting a "maybe-she-will, maybe-she-won't" air to muse through her "gut" and beyond. But alone, unguarded, with Mike Murphy, she certainly doesn't seem to be hedging any bets. "It's over," leaves very little wiggle room. Neither does "political bullshit." Noonan, in her column, goes on to caution (her readers? herself?) about the tendency of the "chattering classes" to encase themselves in a "bubble." One imagines that her Journal readers are wondering: was Noonan in "bubblehead" mode when she was chatting with Murphy, accidentally on air, or was it when she wrote her column?

I am pleased indeed to see this accidental honesty on display. Finally, some Republicans who are in touch with reality. Too bad they spend their workday spinning the very "bull---t" they deplore!

Obama's campaign needs to take this and run an add.

Maybe if Peggy Noonan makes up nice to Sarah Palin, she might get a job writing obituaries at the Wasilla Daily. the WSJ should fire her.

Look, don't be afraid. Watch the speech. Know first hand what America is up against. I have read about this woman and seen her on interviews from Charlie Rose to the WSJ report to the youtube videos. She is a very good speaker. She is an evangelist with a degree in journalism who wanted to be a sportscaster. This is kind of similar to the Rush Limbaugh background. Which is why Rush and the radical conservative right have been beating the drums about her for the last 6 months. But like the rest of her ilk, she is dangerous to democracy. A streak of authoritarianism runs thought them which is mixed in with a great deal of hypocrisy. They want you to be afraid. Don't be afraid. Look these lying bullies in the eye and like Joe Biden's mom told him, go back and bloody their nose so you can walk down the street again. Enough!

I hope this HOT MIKE "HONESTY", gets the same amount of air time as the Jesse Jackson HOT MIKE moment.

This is PRICELESS, because Noonan and Murphy have been the biggest cheerleaders of Palin over the past few days, EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T KNOW HER AT ALL, and NEVER spoke about her and her so-called great accomplishments before 8/29/08.

If Palin is as GOOD as the Republican says she is, then surely we ALL would have heard about her years ago, and she would have been a prominent figure in the Republican party LONG BEFORE NOW.

Well what about Chuck Todd, we all know this was heard on open mic and he was part of the conversation, which one of the buffoons on MSNBC has had the balls to call Mike Murphy on it or Peggy Noonan. Mike was on with David Gregory, I believe later on and not one mention of it. Rachel didn't even mention it. Why not call them on and let them know what hypocrites they are? I can't believe Chuck Todd hasn't mentioned it either.

Why are so many of you so naive?

Who in their right mind believes that any of these people are allowed to speak freely?

Seriously?

I am a Democrat, but have always respected Noonan for what I thought was honesty, integrity and class. She has sorely disappointed me by not speaking her true mind in her interviews and column.
Obviously we cannot be fooled by all this rah, rah Sarah Palin from Noonan or any other Republican.

I have never bought her upper crusted kind of "populism" where she acts as if she communes with women while slamming laundry into the rocks at the waters edge.

A few years ago she managed to write a book on Hillary and without talking to HRC, her family or closest friends managed to write a narrative of her every wish, dream and hope from the time she was a child to first lady. A very intimate portrait of someone she never met.

I think the real point here is that the "Liberal media" is actually compliant with the GOP and right wing when it comes to letting them lie about their real thoughts on air and then chat about their true and exactly opposite beliefs to the spin they are selling after the red light goes out.

You are absolutely right. Not only is Peggy not free to speak her mind, which is a diservice to us all, she is robbed of her voice. Then to top it off some other reporter or pundit, engages her, allows it and, chances are, not really speaking their mind either.

They all seem to think they are actors in a play being produced for the entertainment of lesser beings. They can be real backstage, but fall back into role when the curtain rises. It's all a sham. And we are sucj a good responsive audience!

I am so tired of the Republican spin they are going to run out of lipstick to put on the pig no pun intended. They tried to blame everyone in the world for their pick why because she is not fit to service and they know it.
