ST. PAUL, Minn. — Like his father, Mitt Romney ran for governor and won. Like his father, Mitt Romney ran for president and lost.

But even if his former GOP rival John McCain wins the presidency in November, Romney says he won't emulate his father by taking a Cabinet position _ apparently because he still has his eye on the presidency.

"I saw my dad serve in the Cabinet, and I learned something from that experience," the former Massachusetts governor said Tuesday. "He felt he was kind of soldiered (manhandled) by the young folks in the White House, and then there's the big bureaucracy that you try and move. It's hard to do that. I just don't have any interest in a Cabinet position."

Since ending his own bid for the Republican presidential nomination in February, Romney has done everything asked of him to advance McCain's candidacy.

He played attack dog in media interviews arranged by the McCain staff, enduring hoots and hollers last week as he visited news sets on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Denver. He recommended one of his best advisers, former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman, to McCain. And he and his team raised more than $20 million for his once cash-strapped rival, all of which prompted McCain's top advisers to chat up the possibility that Romney might become the Arizona senator's running mate.

Yet last Thursday, as Romney traveled the California coast urging supporters to give McCain's campaign more money, McCain offered the vice presidential nomination to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. McCain told Romney his decision Friday, the day Palin's selection was announced.

In one sense, it was a crushing blow. But in another, it was liberating.

While Romney wished McCain and Palin well, his friends and advisers say if they fail in the general election, Romney is primed _ even anxious _ to mount a second bid for the White House.

He left himself some wiggle room Tuesday, saying, "That's not in my mind; that's not in my plans."

Now, Romney can again concentrate on the presidency, even as he buffs a veneer of support for the McCain-Palin ticket with his speech to the Republican National Convention on Wednesday.

Indeed, Romney's stumping for McCain in recent months has also served to maintain his visibility and future political viability.

Romney knew it would be rude to be a sore loser. So, even though he thought he had endorsed McCain in the Feb. 7 speech that ended his own presidential bid, Romney submitted to cameras and questions a week later to reiterate that support for the rival he once said lacked the economics background to be president.

Romney also established the Free and Strong America PAC, a political action committee dedicated to helping not only McCain but also like-minded congressional and state political candidates. But the PAC also gives Romney a vehicle to raise money and travel the country, promoting himself as much as the candidates he wants to endorse.

He used a similar committee, and his 2006 chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association, to build the network of advisers, contributors and supporters he relied on during his presidential campaign. The Free and Strong America PAC also allows gives Romney a headquarters where he can remain in contact with his inner circle of advisers.

Should McCain fail, it's no stretch to see Romney hitting the trail again on Nov. 5 in pursuit of the job he wanted from the start.

If anyone is watching Mittens speech can you explain to me how he can call the Congress and Senate Liberal when the Repugs have controlled it and Rove and Cheney have been hovering over everything coming out of there like vultures.

I think that it is high time that we "think outside the McCain," and also high time that we "think outside Republicans and Democrats."

Let's face it: right now we don't have a single viable candidate. Not from either party.

We see clearly what billions of dollars worth of spending can "buy" you, and let's not sidestep the very simple truth that we've been being set-up for this little contretemps for more than 3 years now ... by the very same crooks who swept Article 2, Section 4 of the Constitution "off the table" while blandly referring to said document as "a blee-blee piece of paper."

That's no way to run a country.

That's a bald-faced crime that has killed (so far...) more than a million people.

You "simply do not see," in the news (or even here!) "what is really going on," but that does not erase it from view.

The Founders ... our forefathers ... our "honored dead" ... did not die for THIS. They died for a country, and they lived for that same country.

Do we?

Meg Whitman and Bay Buchanan , because they share the Mormon faith with Romney are eager for that to happen- Romney was their candidate.

Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham would love it - but they love the idea of their speaking fees increasing under a McCain administration.

Romney is another scary dude. I have seen him in public. Talk about a total hypocrite. At an open function that was to allow the public to listen to his campaign speech? He refused anyone who was deemed remotely ethnic or of color. Seriously. God forbid if the man had to look at real people. He is total KKK all the way. Do we really want someone to undo all of MLK's hard work that he died for? I don't think anyone is going to let this guy near public office with that attitude. Evangelicals, he is no christain, you do know this? No christains I know behave like pigs. They look beyond color, race, ethnicity, size, ect. Romney is incapable of doing that. If he plans to represent th American people, he is in for a rude shock, we are not all lilly white.

.....then Hillary would have to run against an incumbent Palin. She could never overtake Palin with 4 years of experience in the WH & with the Clinton negatives.

Does anyone think taht Romey would have been a better VP pick ??? His strong business sense could have been what won over business/economy minded individuals (the people who help america thrive) to the republican side

Those folks are already voting rethug.

No, all the Dems would have had to do is show some Man in his 60s on an ad where he lost his job thanks to Rom ney taking over the company he worked for.

Plus I still think lotsa fundamentalists would think twice before voting for a mormon.

Rudy is speaking now and I feel like throwing up. I have never cared for him. There has always been something so sleazy about him. His whole speech is Obama-bashing big time. I sure hope the dems come out and respond forcefully to the b*sh*t that he is spewing. Gotta turn the channel, can't watch any more of this.

Romney is like HRC; they both think they should have the God-given right to be president, thinking they will try again in 2012; but Sen Obama will be in the WH for 8 years.

And you're the kind of wacko who "hears" the thoughts of others. Clinton and Romney simply believe they'd be a better president than their party's nominee. But you're too obsessed with hate to let it go at that.

I feel sorry for Mitt. He truly was a good attack dog for McCain and he got the shaft in the end! I'd be a little bitter too!

If McCain wins, watch him try to keep his friends in the Senate and tacking to the middle, leaving his poor Veep looking like one of the deer she so enjoys blasting into eternity.
