Schmidt

In an interview with CBS' Katie Couric last night, John McCain chief strategist Steve Schmidt takes Karl Rove to task:

COURIC: I want to get your reaction to something Karl Rove told the Washington Post today. He said Sarah Palin was, quote, "not a governing decision but a campaign decision." What's your reaction.

Mr. SCHMIDT: Karl's wrong. She's an exceptional governor, a reform governor in Alaska. Fifty states in this country, she is the most popular governor of any governor of any state. Her approval ratings are 80 percent. When you look at the fact that Congress's approval rating is 9 percent, and 85 percent of the country thinks we're going in the wrong direction, she's doing something right up there.

She's fought the oil companies. She's building a huge natural gas pipeline. She's taken on the corrupt special interests. She's returned taxpayer money back to families in Alaska. She is the future of the Republican Party. She's going to be an outstanding vice president.

The simple fact here is that this is a mom of five children. There's been a private family matter and she's been under viscous assault and attack from the angry left. And we've seen that today. There's a lot of allegations and rumors, almost all of them untrue. The other side is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at her to see what sticks.

American people are going to love her when they meet her. She's an exceptional woman, an accomplished woman; and by any objective measurement, Katie, she is more experienced and more accomplished than Senator Obama. She's a woman who manages billion dollar budgets. She makes decisions every day. One of the most exceptional governors in the country.

COURIC: So you don't think pre--that Barack Obama's experience as a state senator for eight years and then a US senator for four years, how can you compare those two?

Mr. SCHMIDT: Well, Barack Obama was in the United States Senate for one year before he took off, and Senator Graham will talk about that, to run for president full time. When he was a state senator, he had no executive decisions. At 130 times tough votes, he took a pass and voted present. Leaders have to make decisions. Governor Palin makes decisions.

Couric also challenged Schmidt and Sen. Lindsey Graham on Palin's opposition to the "Bridge to Nowhere" project:

COURIC: So do you think Senator Graham, governors are better leaders than senators?

Story continues below

Sen. GRAHAM: I think governors--having been in the Senate, probably. Governor Palin, I think, really compliments what John wants to do. John has looked at Washington as broken, and it's not nothing--something new to him. I was one of 14 senators who voted against "a bridge to nowhere." I was scared because I knew what was going to come my way. The governor of Alaska said no to the project.

COURIC: But didn't she initially say yes to the project?

Sen. GRAHAM: Yeah.

COURIC: So doesn't that kind of drive a hole into that argument?

Sen. GRAHAM: I think--I have earmarked. I confess on national TV. This has been a journey for Alaska and the country. She's seen what's happened in Alaska. John's seen what has happened in Washington. If you wanted to pick somebody that had a record of change and would tell their own party things they didn't want to hear, she's the best pick John could have made. She's a lot like John.

COURIC: But she did have a change of heart of that bridge to nowhere, correct? I mean, let's just set the record straight.

Mr. SCHMIDT: She did. And let's be clear. She killed it at the end of the day. It's OK.

COURIC: After initially supporting it, that's all. I think we should set the record straight on that.

Mr. SCHMIDT: There's no--there's no--there's no question that that's--that that's the case.

Sen. GRAHAM: Yeah.

Please watch the youtube video of Sarah Palin admitting that she has no clue what the Vice President does. Furthermore, she stated that she would only take the job if it benefited Alaskans.

I guess it's Alaska first, country second. Just what we need. A person who doesn't want sex education taught in our schools, and who ordered her city librarian to take books off the shelves that didn't meet her religion test. She's a sicko. Send her back to her "cool" job where she can get more earmarks for her state. As the Anchorage Daily News said of her, " She can look you in the eye and tell you black is white." That's what she tried to do tonight. Who did the vetting on this person?

"This has been a journey for Alaska and the country. She's seen what's happened in Alaska. John's seen what has happened in Washington."

Am I the only one who giggled at this? (This is only second to McCain calling Alaska "the biggest state"!)

WOW. It's amazing how different a conversation appears when truncated by a blogger with a predisposed opinion and a certain political agenda, and when actually viewed in full context.

I love how they say she's more experienced. But all the experience in the world can't change the facts or the issues. Eight years under the guidance of Karl Rove has been terrible for this country. They ignored the Clinton administration about the dangers of Bin Laden, For eight months they buried intelligence reports about Al Queda and then we had the attacks of Sept 11th. Year after year there have been scandals in this administration. Lies led us to war. Lies keep us in that war.

All the experience in the world does not equal good leadership. We've followed where the Republicans led us. Now its time to change direction.

Experience? Sounds like likely support for bom bom bom bom bom Iran to me! Elect this ticket and watch it happen if their best friend W has not already taken us into the next war against "terrorists". Rudy was back with his nouns verbs and 911 line firing up the base, the Christians who pick and choose where and when they are Christian

Experience? They had to hire a town manager for Wasilla, to unscramble the mess she made firing all the experienced staff!

1. You have to ask: (Glinda voice): "Was it a good experience? Or a bad experience?"
2. Experience means nothing if you don't learn from it.

The republicans keep touting Governor Palin's executive experience and dismissing Obama's experience because he is a Senator. Isn't McCain a Senator? By this logic she is more qualified than both of them.

It is sad you people don't realize your candidate really does not have any experience.
He has dodged his duties of placing votes on the floor so no one would know his true colors.
He started lobbying for Pres. right when he got in office, instead of doing his job.
He's a fake image to lure you in and make you believe whatever he wants so you will vote for him. Sorry!

We all want change. He's only destruction. And the last thing we need to do is be like Europe.
Thing is I wasn't a McCain supporter because as far as I'm concerned he has always been on the Democrat side of the isle more than the conservative side.

do some research on the Illinois legislature and what a "present" vote means before you go spreading your ignorance around any more.

Ok, where to begin with this comment. I love this claim of conservatives that Obama has always been lobbying for president. Let's take a trip back through history:

On the day of congress voting to declare war on Iraq Barack HUSSEIN OBAMA stood outside of Capitol Hill and said it was a mistake. He correctly predicted that it would be a mistake both for America's standing and as a war in general. Now this is a half-black man who's middle name suggests he's related to the dictator that was being overthrown. His last name is one letter of a terrorist that had just killed thousands of people in America. And yet he had the guts to commit an act that, if he'd been wrong, would have been political suicide. If the war had gone perfectly and Hussein overthrown and a democratic nation installed he would have been the naysaying politician who's not only a closet muslim but defends dictatorships of muslims. Yet he still stood up there and had the guts to speak his mind.

Don't try and soil a good man just because your own candidate has sold out. We all know McCain used to have standards but now that his party has gone to town on his we've got a ticket which honestly looks more like another Bush every day. Possibly worse if McCain happens to die in office.

Why wouldn't we want to be more like Europe? God knows their quality of life is alot higher than ours. I know conservatives don't care about quality of life.

That is why most Presidential candidates come from Governor positions and not Senatorial. That's what makes this backwards. But hey if your worried about McCain passing away at least you know the most qualified candidate will take his place.

The most qualified to continue to drive the bus into the ditch perhaps. But then Methuselah is at the top of the ticket.

The mayor Ft. Worth, Texas could be the governor of Alaska. Ft. Worth has a population of 702,850; Alaska 683,478.

It's almost certain that Rove was lying about his opinion of Gov Palin. He's a barracuda for the Republicans. He would NEVER dis his candidate unless he had an angle. I believe the angle is that the Republicans are doing everything they can to make the media the enemy. How better than to stir up things in the press by feeding them this lie.

Why make the media the enemy? Because they, in general, seek the truth. And the truth about Gov Palin is not very good. The fuss over Campbell Brown was inexcusable, but it provided an "excuse" for McCain to bail on Larry King's interview, which was going to be a disaster. A twofer -- blast the press & bail out on a train wreck interview. Perfect.

It practically never is mentioned that even though she changed her mind about the bridge to nowhere she kept the 250+ million dollars the state received for the bridge, so they got the earmark pork anyway. There is nothing worse than telling half a story
