Schmidt

In an interview with CBS' Katie Couric last night, John McCain chief strategist Steve Schmidt takes Karl Rove to task:

COURIC: I want to get your reaction to something Karl Rove told the Washington Post today. He said Sarah Palin was, quote, "not a governing decision but a campaign decision." What's your reaction.

Mr. SCHMIDT: Karl's wrong. She's an exceptional governor, a reform governor in Alaska. Fifty states in this country, she is the most popular governor of any governor of any state. Her approval ratings are 80 percent. When you look at the fact that Congress's approval rating is 9 percent, and 85 percent of the country thinks we're going in the wrong direction, she's doing something right up there.

She's fought the oil companies. She's building a huge natural gas pipeline. She's taken on the corrupt special interests. She's returned taxpayer money back to families in Alaska. She is the future of the Republican Party. She's going to be an outstanding vice president.

The simple fact here is that this is a mom of five children. There's been a private family matter and she's been under viscous assault and attack from the angry left. And we've seen that today. There's a lot of allegations and rumors, almost all of them untrue. The other side is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at her to see what sticks.

American people are going to love her when they meet her. She's an exceptional woman, an accomplished woman; and by any objective measurement, Katie, she is more experienced and more accomplished than Senator Obama. She's a woman who manages billion dollar budgets. She makes decisions every day. One of the most exceptional governors in the country.

COURIC: So you don't think pre--that Barack Obama's experience as a state senator for eight years and then a US senator for four years, how can you compare those two?

Mr. SCHMIDT: Well, Barack Obama was in the United States Senate for one year before he took off, and Senator Graham will talk about that, to run for president full time. When he was a state senator, he had no executive decisions. At 130 times tough votes, he took a pass and voted present. Leaders have to make decisions. Governor Palin makes decisions.

Couric also challenged Schmidt and Sen. Lindsey Graham on Palin's opposition to the "Bridge to Nowhere" project:

COURIC: So do you think Senator Graham, governors are better leaders than senators?

Sen. GRAHAM: I think governors--having been in the Senate, probably. Governor Palin, I think, really compliments what John wants to do. John has looked at Washington as broken, and it's not nothing--something new to him. I was one of 14 senators who voted against "a bridge to nowhere." I was scared because I knew what was going to come my way. The governor of Alaska said no to the project.

COURIC: But didn't she initially say yes to the project?

Sen. GRAHAM: Yeah.

COURIC: So doesn't that kind of drive a hole into that argument?

Sen. GRAHAM: I think--I have earmarked. I confess on national TV. This has been a journey for Alaska and the country. She's seen what's happened in Alaska. John's seen what has happened in Washington. If you wanted to pick somebody that had a record of change and would tell their own party things they didn't want to hear, she's the best pick John could have made. She's a lot like John.

COURIC: But she did have a change of heart of that bridge to nowhere, correct? I mean, let's just set the record straight.

Mr. SCHMIDT: She did. And let's be clear. She killed it at the end of the day. It's OK.

COURIC: After initially supporting it, that's all. I think we should set the record straight on that.

Mr. SCHMIDT: There's no--there's no--there's no question that that's--that that's the case.

Sen. GRAHAM: Yeah.

I can't believe they say these thing about her and they expect the American public to be so stupid that they just buy it. Go Katie and other journalists!! These people need to be questioned HARD during the next two months, especially Sarah Palin! She needs the hard questions and not these men who are so skilled at lying defending her.
Steve Schmidt is the lowest they come-who can really believe anything out of his mouth. And Gramm? What can anyone say about him. He is completely out of touch with reality for one thing.

For once Rove actually told the truth. No he is very right this woman was not chosen to be a heart beat away from president if McCain is elected. She was chosen to attract Hillary's women voters. Obama's campaign is historical, so the GOP wanted to put some histrionics in their campaign. by putting a woman on the ticket. The mistake was that any woman wouldn't do. If McCain had any brains he would have chosen Kaye Bailey Hutchison republican senator from Texas. The only thing is that she was leaning liberal on abortion issues and believes Roe V Wade should not be over turned. He was thinking about putting a pro-choice on his ticket anyway, which may have helped with Hillary supporters. Hutchinson voted for Iraq war and drilling in Alaska. She would have been better qualified to be a heart beat away from the president than Palin. Like I said Roe v Wade does nothing from stopping a woman from having an abortion if she wants, there are thousands still performed in this country every year. She wll have answer to God for her decision and in the end he will judge. If these so called evangelical leaders were teaching the truth of the word of God and women would accept it that would help better than any overturning of a Roe v Wade!!!!!!!
PS McCain perfer younger women anyway is probably why he chose Palin

She dropped the bridge project ...BUT TOOK THE $200 MILLION EARMARK MONEY ANYWAY.

Last year she took more than $500 million in Federal Earmarks.

This year she's requested about $200 million, cut down because Senator Stevens and her staff warned that it was becoming publicly embarrassing how much Federal money Alaska was receiving. More than $300 per resident, more than any other state in the country.

Some reformer.

Joe and Mika were gushing about Sarah this morning. Only KO and Chris Matthews seem dubious. I don't think Blitzer cares for her much nor does Jack Cafferty.

Governors have more experience than Senators? I'm not so sure. Governors understand what is going in their state, but Senators have to know what is going on at home and abroad. Phooey on the Governor is Best Spin!

Hoorah ! The MSM finally is waking up from the slumber of the last 8 years and asking needed questions of the NeoCons. It's about time. I wonder if Karl Rove approved of the Palin choice? It seems not. Since her candidacy is nothing more than a gimmick or ploy to gain women's votes.

I suppose being insulted for vetting his candidate is all it took Oh, and the fact McCain has decided to attack the very people who have been lowballing him with questions. Wonder what he'll do when the convention is over and he needs that same media he has insulted

WOW!, good job Katie. This is the first Dig in the dirt, hold the GOP accountable interview, i've ever read or seen by her.
Nice job. Maybe she'll turn into an ethical media person afterall.

For once Rover tells the truth and they attack him.

Sarah Palin is toast in the real world. In the Bizzaro World that our political landscape has become, she may survive.

I will repeat this until it sinks in...this is the biggest distraction the GOP has ever tried. McCain's campaign manager came out and said that this election is not about the issues. They are being honest for once. They want to use gimmicks to keep our focus off of the real problems this country faces. DON'T FALL FOR IT PEOPLE!

I AGREE!! It's news for one day but now it's back to selecting someone that will run the country effectively. We should be expecting policy issues from McCain because if not it will sail right by and we'll be asking "what happened?"

I agree that it is a gimmick with the intention to distract. The problem is that it has backfired and revealed their lack of interest in "country first", and how they have promoted self interest in policy making which has helped them and their friends, and big business....as they dig a little deeper, they are discovering that Palin has her own lobbyist problems to include an association with Abramhoff, that her ethics have been in questioned...so this does not obscure the current administrations lack of ethics but only highlights them and actually detracts from McCain being honorable to showing he really is "MORE OF THE SAME"

Yes but is any of her negative being reported in the MSM, or just lack of experience.

Keep repeating it. Palin will not change any dems vote. She will energized the religious right/Pro-life base. No reasoning will alter their religious beliefs.
Rove and Schmidt are not in disagreement. Schmidt is a protege of Rove.
Distrust everything that is said by either.

She only cut the bridge because Alaska was going to have to pay 80%+ of it. She still took the Federal money for it and built a road leading up the bridge that won't be built.
