Alaska Police Union Files Complaint Against Palin

The GOP candidate for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, may be facing yet another ethics investigation back in her home state of Alaska. An ethics complaint obtained by NBC News was filed Wednesday by the police officers union in Alaska, requesting a probe into possible wrongdoing by the governor or her office. It was brought on behalf of state trooper Mike Wooten, an ex-brother-in-law of Palin who is at the center of the "Troopergate" scandal.

The complaint alleges that the governor or her staff may have have improperly disclosed information from Wooten's personnel records. The complaint alleges "criminal penalties may apply."

John Cyr, director of the union that filed the complaint, told NBC News, "It seems obvious to us somebody has improperly accessed [Wooten's] personnel file."

This isn't a non-story; it's abuse of power, if true.

The documents were released to attorneys specifically for a divorce case. Are these documents actually part of the court record, and are divorce procedings public information in Alaska? If they've been made part of a public record, they're fair game. If not ... she or some scapegoat in her administration is in trouble.

I'm not sure what the name of the personnel commission is in this case, but if he was reprimanded, the charges were heard by what we call the Police and Fire Commission where I live. Those procedings and any actions that don't require a vote of a public body aren't available under the FOIA laws I've worked with.

McCain should have done his own vetting, or needs to accept responsibility for leaving it to the press. This scenario is a great example of why the press has the freedoms it does; I hope they aren't intimidated from fulfilling the responsibility that goes with those freedoms.

She wants her own appointees to issue a verdict, but the State says absolutely not, we will have independent counsel investigate. The police union complaint is a completely separate matter. So if you want to get technical about it, a total of 3 complaints have been filed as of Wednesday. One by the State of Alaska, one by Sarah Palin, and one by the Police union. Anything else?
