ST. PAUL, Minn. — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her Republican supporters held back little Wednesday as they issued dismissive attacks on Barack Obama and flattering praise on her credentials to be vice president. In some cases, the reproach and the praise stretched the truth.

Some examples:

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform _ not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Story continues below

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply ... She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state _ by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right _ change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington _ throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

I guess everyone hears what they want and can adapt what was said during the speech to their point of view. Personally what I didn't hear Palin talk about is education, unemployment, women's issues, climate change, environmental concerns besides their mantra "drill baby drill" (insulting as it was). I didn't hear a vision, just the same old rhetoric that got us 8 years of Bush, no new ideas, no forward thinking. I did not hear a party willing to reach out an olive branch to independents or even democrats it was strictly the same old crap they have been infecting this country with for 8 years now. Because she is a woman, does not make me want to vote for her, I vote on issues that affect my life and my country. I was insulted by her snide comments and inaccuracies. As far as her daughter, it should NOT be off limits. When asked about the pregnacy Palin said her daughter "chose" to have it. Well, if her mother had her way that choice would be non existent. These Republicans "really" don't get it, and Sarah Palin YOU DON'T GET IT! you need to go home and take care of your family!

Talking about the issues you were dead on. Taking the stretched truths (on both sides) out and focusing on the issues (on both sides) is the only way to muddle through this election.

Then you decided to go beyond the issues and talk about her family as fair game. That doesn't jive with your earlier comment. Do you want to make it personal or focus on the issues. If you want it both ways then you don't really care about the issues you speak of. Tell Mrs. Palin to go home and take care of her family is insulting to all women and would be the same as telling you to stop writing in here and focus on your family. Neither is a fair statement. You started out so well by focusing on the issues and then jumped into the gutter with everyone else with the stay home and family is fair game comments. Good start lousy ending!

You Liberals and you fancy use of facts and logics to support your arguments. When will you learn it isn't about truthiness but about stirring up emotions, because how you *feel* defines the real truth.

oh, wait. no it doesn't. damn my progressiveness.

Sarah Palin just proved yesterday that she is quite comfortable LYING to the American people about her record. Sarah Palin lied with a straight face, even knowing that most people are well aware of the truth of her actually having supported the building of the "Bridge to Nowhere", and about her record of hiring lobbyists to lobby Washington for money. Sarah Palin claims she is against earmarks, BUT THE TRUTH IS, as governor she requested earmarks totalling $750 million dollars from the federal government (the largest amount in this country per-capita request in the nation).

Sadly of all is that Sarah Palin claims that families with children with disabilities will have her as a champion in the White House, BUT the fact is in Alaska those same parents had NO champion in Sarah, who actually CUT by 60% funding to programs which helped children with disabilities in her state.
Sarah Palin also CUT funding to programs which help HOMELESS pregnant teens, have a place to sleep while pregnant.

Hypocrically, of all is that Sarah Palin boldly sites an ethics bill in Alaska, it seems she has forgotten that she herself is RIGHT NOW under investigation for ethics violation.
Sarah Palin is ALREADY participating in the same type of behaviour that we have seen in the White House over the past 8 years, the coverups, and lies to try keep that behaviour, of ethics violation, from the public

All the talk about Obama and who is this guy? We don't really know him. The more we know him..the better we as honest American people like him and what he stands for and for the good of our lives
in the future. The dirty laundry is now coming out about Sarah Palin..I wanted to give her some
time to convince me she would be a better candidate for VP but after the lies and all of the false
statements about her job as governor..she is even worse than all of the other possible choices
McCain could've chosen. Can't wait to hear McCain and to listen to him stumble thru his lies and
ill prepared speech tonight. Talk about a pack of hypocrits???

I heard Bill O'Reilly say, last night, that it would be a mistake for Palin to go after Obama, in her speech, because she hasn't proven herself enough to do that. For once I agree with him and hope fair-minded Independents and others who those McMainiacs were trying to impress, will ask, as I did, "Who the Heck does she think she is"? Barack Obama has been meeting and talking to the American people all over this country, for the last 19 months. The fact that he's now the Democratic Party's candidate, demonstrates that he obviously convinced a lot of those people (over 18 million) to cast their votes for him and believe that he is fit to lead our nation. Now, enters Madam Palin armed with all her 1,500 TOTAL votes cast in both her mayoral and gubernatorial races, feeling qualified to belittle and mock Obama....C'mon Dems, don't be shy about taking on MOMZILLA!!!!!

foxfan - yes - it was a whopping 25 more. I'm sure that makes you feel we are all lying and distorting because saywha rounded down. And she is not lying at all, of course. And Huckabee is not either. How oddly comforting self-deception is, isn't it! But then the RW Dominionists claim the reason 2 +2 + 4 is because GOD made it happen - could have been five. (Well, duh.)

So we will let God give you the 25 votes saywha didn't mention. Biden STILL won vastly more. Get over it.

You are right, it was a bit over 115,000, so the question is whether it was purposeful distortion or a mistake... either way the point saywha's point remains un-refuted.

Based on the recent developments, I am definitely feeling very "punchy" right now. Barack, I love you man. But it's time to start fighting back dude! Remember what happened to Kerry and "swiftboating"?!

Some of you may recall gangster Al Capone's quote: "You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone."

I am absolutely NOT condoning gun or direct physical violence of course. But metaphorically speaking, kinds words are great in diplomatic and civil discourse when the other persons are willing to listen and discuss or debate civilly. But when you're dealing with right-wing Rethuglican guttersnipes, it's time to politically put on the metaphoric brass knuckles and begin jabbing for the teeth!

The Women's Lib Movement was never really about women. It was always about LIBERAL elitist women and was NEVER all inclusive. Ask any conservative woman who lived through the fifties, sixties and seventies.

It's all about the leftist/Marxist ideology, and the elitist snobbery of the "White Ivory Towers" socialist indoctrination.

For the "Average" American woman who has bought into the left's hogwash that every woman can do anything and has the support of the "SISTERHOOD", sadly, they have been duped, BIG TIME.

Gov. Palin just doesn't fit the prototype, so she's not in the "SISTERHOOD" and never will be. She is anathema to their beliefs and they will vilify, excoriate, condemn, and hate her for it

Gov Palin is not part of a sisterhood. She would take away all of the hard-earned rights that we women fought for for so long. She does not support equal pay for equal work, she does not support choice, she does not support education that would prevent unwanted pregnancy. This is not what sisterhood is about. She supports only her personal career and John McCain as he would fulfill her personal career plans.

Hmmm - elite? Equal pay for equal work. Safe workplaces free from harassment. Support for childcare credits for all working mothers (and fathers by the way). Health care and social security for homemakers (Women's Lib didn't scuttle that.) Hmmm. Freedom of choice - meaning the right to have safe, healthy pregnancies and healthy kids as well as access to abortions. Support for single mothers and especially pregnant teens. EITC to help support low-wage mothers and provide asset bases for their families. The right of women everywhere to be equal before the law so a man does not have to co-sign for her on financial and legal matters. Hmmm.

Sorry - don't see the elite, liberal bias here.

So basically she is a governor of an oil producing state, her foreign policy is commander of the national guard as well as living close to the border and her speeches are written by a Bush speechwriter.

Sounds like Bush in 2000 and everybody knows where his experience on foreign policy and energy issues has lead the country: Iraq and 4$/gallon.

You know, you ought to stop pushing the rep agenda and do a little research of your own for a change. You do realize that BO's actual positions are listed in detail on his site. If you have some other data that you can site that refutes what he says he wants to do give us the data. Talk is cheap.

Wow. The culture wars are back. Mean spirited "truthiness" is back. I grew up in a small town in the Pacific Northwest with girls like Gov. Palin. I'm a hick at heart and proud of my country values, but Gov. Palin is not just country, she's a redneck in lipstick. Terrifying. Redneck means something different in the north than in the south, it's not as much about race or Confederate flags up there (although apparently there is quite a bit of support in Alaska against the union), it's about a basic fear and distrust of anybody different than you. It's about seeing the world as "us" and "them." There is no third option in that world. It's more of the George W. Bush false choice argument that has been so popular in the Republican Party for the past 8 years: You are either with us, or against us. If you don't support the war, you hate the troops and our freedom. etc. Just as a matter of practicality, we can't get anything done in a polarized world like that. Our country has only ever gotten anything done by coming together despite our differences. Respect for all people is a basic American value. The nasty divisive tone that I saw in Gov. Palin's speech deriding the work of others, and distorting the truth, did not lift our country to a bigger and better place, it brought the national conversation to a meaner and smaller place. How deeply sad.

WHAAAAAAAAA WHAAAAAAAAA

I, too, was astounded at the enthusiastic and open mockery of community organizers, who work to help struggling people improve their lives. It was absolutely repugnant.

LOL

It's OK for Obama Obiden to mock GOVERNOR Palin on your incredible journey to become a mayor and then Governor?? NO.. You all are going to rue the day you mocked this woman.

When has Obama or Biden mocked Palin. We have seen respect for her candidacy and her privacy, and criticism of her positions. Isn't that part of public debate? From the candidates themselves, we have seen only mockery - and as this article points out, disinformation - from Palin.
