ST. PAUL, Minn. — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her Republican supporters held back little Wednesday as they issued dismissive attacks on Barack Obama and flattering praise on her credentials to be vice president. In some cases, the reproach and the praise stretched the truth.

Some examples:

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform _ not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Story continues below

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply ... She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state _ by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right _ change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington _ throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

Did anyone notice that while Obama stated that family and children are off limits that the Republicans
launch a clever attack against Michelle Obama. The attack?
" I am proud to be an American" "I am proud of my country"
This was said in response to Michele Obama's statement "I am finally proud of my country . . . "

Well so much for keeping family out of it.

And then again, maybe it was just a statement of how she feels. VP candidate proud of America. Not like it doesn't fit in.

Actually the line was, "and I've ALWAYS been proud of my country." and it was undeniably a reference to Michelle Obama. The campaign surrogates have said so on CNN and FOX and MSNBC all agree.

Do any of us really understand how it would feel to be Michelle Obama? Or African American?

I sure don't, never having walked a mile in those shoes.

Maybe it was an exciting, thrilling moment for her. If so, wonderful.

When campaigning in Ketchikan, Sarah Palin was for the bridge to nowhere. "How dare they call this small town 'nowhere'" or something like that. After she was elected, she stopped the project. But she kept the money for the bridge, anyway. Yeah, way to save on the pork.

It gets better. There are federal funds to build the road to the bridge. Rather than return those funds to the federal government, she decided to build the road anyway...despite the fact that there will never be any bridge.

For more fiscal fun, look at the debt of Wasilla pre- and post-Palin.

Even though the facts are in Obama's favor, I have to wonder whether that even matters?

The "swing voters" that need to read the facts probably don't read Huffingtonpost or factcheck.org. They get their news from the networks or CNN , which tend to gloss over facts in favor for a good story. Its really the question of how to get the facts about Obama's record to the people that will ultimately end up deciding this election.

I fear that distortions and rumors will win out against facts...

The Right will not believe the Obama ads any more than the Left will believe the McCain ads. It's only the undecided that will be affected and I hope they are not basing their decision solely on a tv ad.

I am a Democrat and went to Ohio, the "epicenter" of Republican under-handedness, in 2004, to work for Kerry. I literally witnessed evil first-hand. These responses make me fear that the same scenario is happening again: Democrats thinking that truth and goodness will win out, and that most voters vote on issues (reference George Lakoff's latest article). Wake up everyone - it hasn't for at least the last eight years.
I watched Palin's speech, and if I were a swing-voter I would swing her way. I wouldn't check out what she said. I would have found her exceptionally believable, and she made my job as a lazy voter easy by being so. In the video about Obama, I was wondering how much time would be dedicated to highlighting his accomplishments in the state and U.S. Senate, since we've heard more about his community organizer role. This portion of the video was very weak. He has spent an inordinate amount of time talking about his plans vs. what he HAS done as proof that he can accomplish his plans.
So, for all of those who do nothing but watch the conventions and go vote, Palin was quite effective. I was laughing her and the rest of this freak show off before I saw her last night, and now I'm very concerned.
I urge everyone to take them very seriously, even if you have to convince yourself to do so.

To the LGBT American, the names Romney and Palin evoke pain and hatred by these theocratic folks....and the former wears magic pajamas and has his religion impuned by the fundies and others.

We know many former Roman Catholics, fundies and Mormons who are monogamously same-sex coupled raising children. Mitt Romney is such a hateful person and it finally took Governor Patrick to repeal the 1913 law. Anita Bryant Palin does the same

Damn, they took my idea - I'm in the wrong industry.

My initial idea (posted here last Friday morning after the announcement) was to have Amy Poehler again as Hillary Clinton, in a cage match of sorts with Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, to see who would be the first female presence in the white house.

We'll see if I truly am in the wrong industry!

As an Independent, if Sarah Palin had "hit it out of the park" as some people suggest, I'd have said so, knowing that my opinion is just that. At the same time, I acknowledge that she could become a player in the Republican party if her past doesn't catch up with her. (Good luck with that.) The only thing I got out of her monologue was that the Republicans really don't have a clue about how to appeal to all of America. Listen, I understand the concept of putting pressure on your opponent, but usually, you substantiate your position by stating facts that contradict your opponents message. I saw none of that. I'm typing this while knowing that the "Don't let facts get in the way" mantra of the GOP is in full effect. Another (more infuriating) issue was the lies and obvious exaggerations of Obama's positions, experiences and how they'll affect his leadership and America respectively. The only thing the Republican convention (or at least what I watched of it) did for "this voter" is justify every reason why I believe that Obama and Biden is the best ticket for America out of the Republican quagmire that Sister Sarah is now a card carrying member of.

You're on the right track... The speech was indeed written by a former Bush speechwriter... The words weren't her own... She delivered the message given to her by the Republican party. Which is how it will be if the Repubes get into the White House... She'll do as she's told by the puppet masters behind the scenes... What a disgrace.

We all need to step up our efforts to mobilize the effort to get Barack Obama elected this November and end the GOP reign once and for all.

Please encourage those around you to go to BarackObama.com and volunteer or make a donation today to support this movement for change:

I was astounded that the GOP had the gall to put down community organizers as well.

This election is too important to base our votes on spin rather than facts.
Barack Obama's record is linked below:

US Senate Record:
http://www.statesurge.com/members/923-barack-obama-federal

State Senate:
http://factcheck.barackobama.com/factcheck/2008/01/14/obamas_strong_record_of_accomp.php

In addition, Barack Obama is a member of the Foreign Relations Committee.
He was the first to call for and has been proven right on needing a
timeline for Iraq, needing more troops in Afghanistan, needing diplomacy
with Iran and going ofter Bin Laden and Al Qaeda in Pakistan. The Bush
administration has adopted all of these positions over the last year.

In addition no one has more experience with foreign relations than Barack
Obama's VP, Joe Biden. Biden is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign
Relations committee.

Community organizers weren't mocked. A Community Organizer who thinks he is qualifed to be president was mocked and deservingly so. It was a response to his campaign mocking small town mayor's, who actually have responsibilities.

Repugnant?
Don't you find it repugnant to discredit the roles of a mayor/govenor? Obama doesn't.
She was simply defending her record, after being bashed for days about how being a mayor/govenor does not "qualify" her to be the veep. It was her way of camparing the two jobs, and her credentials are more impressive; you can't be mad at that!
You tell me: Who has a bigger role in a community, a mayor (who can also be considered a community organizer), or simply an organizer? The answer should be obvious!

Watching Palin's rapturous speech last night was an awesome experience, my friends. For the first time in a long time I got a great night's sleep because I finally felt assured that the conservatives were going to win this election.

Unlike the impure elites, Sarah Palin can:

a) Summarize a complex issue in a sentence particle, instead of the long winded elite vacillation that goes on in snobby academia. This is what America wants, I mean real America, small town America.

b) Connect with the common man/woman who love a good smack down in the name of righteousness. Watching her and Giuliani go after the liberals last night was like watching pit bull attack a poodle, sheer fun.

c) Keep God in her heart. When she says "God Bless America," we have the evidence that she means it and means it good. One of her pastors said, in front of her, that "Alaska would be a refuge for the lower 48 states in the end days" and I now agree with him.

I always thought Christ would return to smite the liberals, mounted on a white horse. Now I'm convinced he will ride in on a pitbull wearing lipstick.
