Vanity Fair:

One of the persistent memes in the Republican line of attack against Barack Obama is the notion that he is an elitist, whereas the G.O.P. represent real working Americans like Levi "F-in' Redneck" Johnston.

It caught our attention, then, when First Lady Laura Bush and would-be First Lady Cindy McCain took the stage Tuesday night wearing some rather fancy designer clothes. So we asked our fashion department to price out their outfits.

Who the hell dresses her anyway. $300K for that. Ugh!! Next time go to Marshals.

Second question - since it is very common for folks to "Borrow" an outfit from a designer for an event versus actually buying it (mostly at the insistence of the designer to get press). Anybody actually confirm Cindy (or Michelle for that matter) BOUGHT the outfits they were wearing?

Anybody actually read this from the article?

"(All prices except Laura’s shoes and Cindy’s watch are estimates, and the jewelry prices are based on the assumption that the pieces are real.)"

So $280K for earings and a necklace that may very well be fake and worth a $1.50? Or does that not fit the story line?

I'd worry more if Cindy McCain didn't buy good clothes. She's incredibly wealthy, no one is hiding that. She's not ashamed of it and shouldn't be. I like her clothes and it's so not easy to dress when you're 50s and over.

Does someone have some sort of "proof" that she just bought her diamond earrings? Why is this such a big deal here anyway? I'd wonder more if she didn't have important pieces of jewelry at her age.

If you care so much about what she wears, well then, jealous much.

geez spitfire67, if u don't know that our economy is heading towards downswing and that a lot of people can be VERY well off with another 300,000 dollars in their pockets.

There is no way this woman and her husband can relate to the pain Americans are suffering >:(

Are you seriously suggesting that instead of wearing nice clothes and jewelry, that Cindy should now distribute her personal property to the less fortunate? Doesn't she do enough of that via her philanthropies?

I may have missed this comment if someone already made it, but if she spent that much on her outfit for each night of the convention, that means she spent $300K * 4 Nights = $1.2M. Obama spent $1.65M on his ONE house. It is possible that Cindy McCain spent as much on her outfits for the convention as Obama did on his residence (all one of them). Can some reporter or the Obama campaign look into this?

indeed, I like said before, the Mc-Bush campaign can never relate to Americans' sufferings

My house, car, and college education cost less than that. What the hell?

Ok I read the whole article on the Vanity Fair website, and there were actually people complaining about them focusing on her clothes and not the issues. People: it's Vanity Fair, not the Economist. Focusing on fashion is what they do. Do not go reading fashion magazines in search of political "issue" coverage and you will not be disappointed.

You obviously don't read Vanity Fair much. it's not a fashion mag despite its name and it usually has some of the most incisive articles out there in every issue.

As long as we're going with the sexist "trash Cindy's outfits" theme today (anyone ever figured the cost of one of Mitten Romney's suits, ie.?), let me jump gleefully on board. Cindy looks like a white cobra, and the tight pinhead hair thing only emphasized that look. So did anyone else notice that after Sarah Mav'rick Palin came on board with a more country western sort of do -- bangs and a bubble of hair on top -- Cindy got a makeover? She got bangs, let her hair down, took on a "softer" look. Softer or no, was there any creepier image than that of Cindy in Soylent Green, holding infant Palin? Okay, one of many creepy images.
None of this would matter of course, not the cost of the clothing nor the pregnancy of Bristol, if they weren't the ones pretending to be something else, if they weren't the ones calling us elite, or lacking family values. It's their hypocrisy that makes this all fair game. Kudos to Barack for taking the high road on family issues, but we don't have to.

The comments on whether Barbie got her money's worth miss the point. In an America that is horrifyingly in debt, that borrows money from China to buy oil from the Middle East, that outsources jobs and then gives tax breaks to the companies that have shut down our economy, that doesn't provide basic health care for all its citizens, that failed to regulate mortgage companies so that a record number of people have either lost their homes or are in danger of losing them, that STILL hasn't provided enough help to the people of New Orleans, and that has a collapsing infrastructure and not enough money to fix it, that outfit was an insult--a slap in the face to everyone in this country.

It's Nancy Reagan and Marie Antoinette all over again. Let them wear tee shirts.

These people are vile.

Some might say that wearing a dress that is more expensive than a new house, a new car and a boat might be a little elitist.

The dress only cost three thousand. Read the article before you make silly comments.

Don't forget to add in all the plastic she used on her face. Plastic Cindy and her barbie clothes. Just think of all the good she could have done instead of wearing real estate Century 21 colors (or was that in support of all the houses she owns?).

I think it's gorgeous, however, I think it's a good idea for her to tone it down a bit. This does not represent the average American who is struggling to afford health care, gas, food ,and on and on and on................ but then again this party does not "have a clue" what the real issues are with most Americans and what the priorities really are.

Cindy McCain spends $300,000 for an outfit, but the Obama's are the elitist? Pot.Kettle.Black?

I believe Michelle' outfit cost around $1,000, that's a little more down to earth.

I think Cindy's $300,000 outfit shows just how out of touch the McCain's are with the working class people of America. After all, Cindy's outfit cost more than most of our houses.

Not only was the price obscene, the dress itself was hurl worthy.

How much you want to bet this expensive outfit is never worn again and ends up at the back of one of Cindy's numerous walk in closets?

A little more down to earth? It is $299,000 cheaper! That's a lot of extra pocket change

You can wear cheap clothes and still be an elitist. Another word for "elitist" might be "intellectual snob."
