UPDATE: Barack Obama responded personally to Sarah Palin's speech, saying, "You're hearing an awful lot about me, most of which is not true. What you're not hearing is a lot about you." Watch the whole thing.

Barack Obama's camp issued a statement in response to Sarah Palin's speech:

"The speech that Governor Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years. If Governor Palin and John McCain want to define 'change' as voting with George Bush 90% of the time, that's their choice, but we don't think the American people are ready to take a 10% chance on change."

On Obama's campaign plane, top strategist David Axelrod responded:

"There wasn't one thing that she said about Obama or what he's proposing that is true. She tried to attack Senator Obama by saying he had no significant legislative achievements. Maybe that's what she was told."

On Wednesday, Republicans sought to define Obama as untested and inexperienced, making light of his past work as a community organizer in Chicago.

"For everyday people, ... that seems like real work," said Axelrod.

Ultimately, Axelrod said, the Republicans squandered an opportunity to promote their candidate. He also questioned the emphasis on McCain's years as a prisoner of war, saying the Arizona senator's history already was well known.

"They're shedding an awfully lot of heat but no light," he said. "It almost defies the laws of physics."

As for Palin's claim to be an outsider, Axelrod said that given her pointed criticism of Obama, "for someone who makes the point that she's not from Washington, she looked very much like she would fit in very well there."

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe also sent an email to supporters:

I wasn't planning on sending you something tonight. But if you saw what I saw from the Republican convention, you know that it demands a response.

I saw John McCain's attack squad of negative, cynical politicians. They lied about Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and they attacked you for being a part of this campaign.

But worst of all -- and this deserves to be noted -- they insulted the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in our political process.

You know that despite what John McCain and his attack squad say, everyday people have the power to build something extraordinary when we come together. Make a donation of $5 or more right now to remind them.

Both Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin specifically mocked Barack's experience as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago more than two decades ago, where he worked with people who had lost jobs and been left behind when the local steel plants closed.

Let's clarify something for them right now.

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

And it's no surprise that, after eight years of George Bush, millions of people have found that by coming together in their local communities they can change the course of history. That promise is what our campaign has been about from the beginning.

Throughout our history, ordinary people have made good on America's promise by organizing for change from the bottom up. Community organizing is the foundation of the civil rights movement, the women's suffrage movement, labor rights, and the 40-hour workweek. And it's happening today in church basements and community centers and living rooms across America.

Meanwhile, we still haven't gotten a single idea during the entire Republican convention about the economy and how to lift a middle class so harmed by the Bush-McCain policies.

It's now clear that John McCain's campaign has decided that desperate lies and personal attacks -- on Barack Obama and on you -- are the only way they can earn a third term for the Bush policies that McCain has supported more than 90 percent of the time.

The email asks contributors to help fight back by making a donation.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who Palin claimed "can't stand up to John McCain," fired back, with a spokesman deeming her speech "shrill and sarcastic":

"Anyone who knows Senator Reid knows he never backs down when he's fighting for what's right and that he always stands up to John McCain when he is wrong," Jim Manley, Reid's press secretary, told CNN. "Shrill and sarcastic political attacks may fire up the Republican base, but they don't change the fact that a McCain-Palin administration would mean four more years of failed Bush-Cheney policies."

On NBC's Today, Joe Biden called Palin's performance "one heck of a political speech" and "Karl Rove stuff" that avoided issues or policy proposals "to dig us out of the hole the Bush administration has dug us into." But it showed, he said, that Palin would be a "formidable" opponent and "very skillful debater." Watch:

Sarah Palin's voice and demeaner have already gotten on my nerves. However, her lies,
smears and slanders on Senator Obama follow right along with the Republican swiftboating
that the Karl Rove playbook has executed in past elections. Senator Obama needs to SUE
McCain/Palin for SLANDER! Maybe that would get their attention.

The McCain/Palin campaign has decided to go after the "low information" voter who does not
bother to read and understand the real issues. That is why the Republicans keep saying the
election is not about issues. They have not given ANY new ideas on issues, just the old Bush
Admin. strategy over again. It is unfortunate for our country that there are "low information" voters,
people who do not care about what is important, but vote on a single issue (like abortion) or
on the fact that Senator Obama is part black (racism). I know of people who have written to
me who just think McCain and Palin are SO great. They believe WHATEVER McCain/Palin put
out and will blindly follow the Republicans as they have in the past two elections. They may hate
the war as much as the next guy, but think it is unpatriotic to say or do anything to change
the future.

These people have been snowed by the Democrats are unpatriotic and unGodly crap!
I am a Democrat who is patriotic and Christian and live my life as God would want. I don't
want more wars and more young people dying.

The problem is that even if you're looking for a more Christian America, they call you Unchristian if you don't agree with *their* Christianity, they demand you worship their flag, they ridicule loving your fellow man, and especially a Christian approach to diplomacy. Bomb the !@##s, "let God sort them out" is movie propaganda, not the way to peace.

I don't care for Sarah Palin but, come on, does any one really think McCain picked her? I don't think a brief meeting in February would enable him to see what kind of woman she really is. Someone else saw what we all saw Wednesday night and decided it was just what McCain needs. Unfortunately, she may energize his campaign in the short run but all it really is doing is making him look older and more of a doofus. So now we have a boring, lying male at the top of the repub ticket and a mean spirited, attractive lady with a lot of baggage shoring him up. Sounds like a dream ticket to me -- in a parallel universe, maybe.

I disagree, I think the Dems have several real women, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, etc....

The problem is that the republicans couldn't find a woman like that, so they found one to deliver a speech written by the George Bush people filled with the same lies and same old negative politics as usual. A real woman would have talked about the real issues instead of belittling the valuable work done by her opponent.

A "real woman" doesn't have to resort to condescension and rhetoric to offset an opponent. A "real woman" doesn't have to fabricate a history of undeserved grandeur for self-promotion. A "real woman" doesn't tear down; she uplifts. She stands on her own. She doesn't have to adopt the ways of the ruthless. She rules with confidence, but not cockiness. Her strength is her wisdom and compassion, not flippancy and arrogance. A "real woman" would never accept the role of "attack dog," for a "real woman" knows that a female dog is really a .... But then again, a "real man" would never point this out, would he?

If Sarah were a "real woman," she would help the little boys build their castle. No?

Think Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto...real women warriors who are ready to lead nations are brave enough to die for their country. They don't hide from gunfire, much less media scrutiny or questions about their competence.

Gandhi and Bhutto were real women warriors; patriots who gladly laid down their lives for their countries. Does anyone really think that Sarah Palin is woman enough to do that? Hell no! She's shown herself to be a coward who's out for herself, hiding behind wicked old farts who are telling her what to say and what to think.

I was never EVER a Hillary supporter but honestly, I know for a fact that Hillary would proudly have taken a bullet for America. Sarah Palin's cowardice has given me a whole new respect and appreciation for Hillary Rodham Clinton, and when we do finally have a woman for president, I'd damn sure rather it was Hillary than this hockey mom who's not even sure what a president does. It's time for Hillary to come out and put the smackdown on the pitbull and make it clear that being the first woman president is HER g**damned job!!!

I never liked her, but Hillary's the true warrior and patriot. She's one helluva adversary in a fight and about a trillion times more qualified to lead than Sarah Palin. I believe in giving credit where it is due.

You mean the repubs and Palin, who both told Hillary to "stop whining" are now suddenly "sensitive" and "offended" and "politically correct" (a word most used by limbaugh conservatives who also say "feminazi") are now taking "she has no experience and qualifications and is not a reformer" as "she is a woman and therefore unqualified"?

I just sent this to everyone I know. Thank you so much for this bit of clarity that once again I could NOT get from the main-stream media. Funny that I get more reliable news from the blogs than I do from the news on TV. The media is really doing all of us a disservice. If you aren't for McCain, you can't get any news. If you are for McCain, all you get is cheerleading. Either way, they're failing massively in their obligation to give us accurate information.

Clearly we cannot count on the MSM for reliable information in this election. Blogging is the only way we're going to get any real news.

Thanks to EVERYBODY for sharing. I'm passing it on and doing my part; so is everyone else I know.

If Palin is such a go-getter why didn't she teach her daughter how to 'go get' some birth control. That seems like parenting 101 ,to me. Family needs to come first .It seems Palin has put her job first. Her family seems to be without the leadership of a loving mother. While the man may think of himself as the head of the family we all know mothers are the heart of the family.
That teenage daughter obviously hasn't had the guidance she needed to help her make better choices. Would her mom have noticed the goings-on if she had been more present in the life of the family? Just a question.
What about her newborn son? Shouldn't he come first on the long list of what's most important. That babe got passed around like a hot potato the other evening. This whole persona that is emerging of Palin is full of wholes.

For once I wish the campaign was a few months longer. It'll take time to learn all about Missy.

I'm sorry, but this line always irritates me. No one ever complained that RFK was putting his career above is ELEVEN children. In fact, didn't Biden get praise for soldiering on and going to work in the Senate after having lost his wife and child, despite the fact that he had two other children left? Was he being a bad father to them?

Secondly, this family should always come first line has always struck me as a little narcissistic and self-indulgent. I generally agree that family should come before career if we're talking about a job at the post office, or even an executive at a large firm.

But we're talking about the Presidency and Vice Presidency of the United States here! The decisions made in the Oval Office affect 300 MILLION people, and often all 6 BILLION on the planet. If you truly believe in your cause and believe you can do good for these people, how SELFISH is it of you to put your parochial interests ahead of an entire nation, much less the planet?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:26 PM on 09/06/2008

God should come first and then family. There's nothing narcissistic about that. The problem with this society is that everyone wants to have it all, but in reality, you never will. Kids have parents for three reasons: for love, for nurture and for rearing. It is not up to society to fulfill the parental role of these children. The mother does not carry the child in her body for no reason. There is a reason, too, that the father's breasts do not carry milk. Nowadays, before the baby is weaned from the mother's breast, the mother is off to work. There is something wrong with this picture and something even more wrong with a society where this is expected. Maybe if someone stayed home and raised the kids that they opted to bring into this world, the world wouldn't be so plagued with such human atrocities. Instead of growing a society where everyone feels the need to "have it all," perhaps we would bode much better in a society where sacrifices are made for the betterment of all.

I know there are a lot of women who don't share my viewpoint, but heck, I'm narcissistic -- what do I care?

No offense, but I gave up a fabulous and very well-paid career to stay at home with my autistic son. When you have a child with a disability, there aren't enough hours in the day to be the best mother you can be and also be a professional. You have to pick one. In my book, your child ALWAYS comes first.

Fathers and mothers are NOT the same. PERIOD. We're not interchangeable. We're two sides of one coin. My husband's an excellent father, but he sees the big picture; keeping our son fed, clothed, housed, educated and properly guided toward adulthood. This to him is a father's love.

I see the little things, like shots, dental visits, speech therapy, PTA, teeth brushing, how well he eats, how much milk he drinks, school forms, ear infections, when he needs a hug, hanging his artwork on the fridge. It may sound trivial but he's my baby! My being there matters. I made much more than my husband, but autism is hard enough without having an absentee mom who's too busy conquering the world to color with him.

I do agree on one thing: I don't see how Palin's going to swing this. A baby with DS? She's nuts if she thinks anyone else will care for him like she would, and when she figures this out, the Oval Office will have to take a back seat to her child.

The comments from Obama about McCain voting with President Bush 90% of the time is all smoke. First of all Bush does NOT vote! Anything that the President signs has been passed by Congress. Since the Democrats have been in control, any bill signed by Bush would have been passed by the Democratic controlled Congress. It can therefore be concluded that the majority of Congress voted with Bush. Any veto that Bush signed was most likely justified and once again if the majority voted against the veto, then Bush would not had prevailed. McCain may have voted against some bills or laws to guard against bigger government. I would rather have someone voting YES or NO instead of PRESENT like Obama has done the majority of the time.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:05 PM on 09/06/2008

What you've failed to mention here is that the whole talking point about voting with Bush 90% of the time came from John McCain himself. See the following video for proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uThoBMfcFRc . While the President does not vote, he absolutely makes his opinions about various bills known before they even get to a vote on the Congressional/Senate floor. Voting with Bush basically means "agreeing" with him 90% of the time whether he signs or vetoes....

You really do not know much about John McCain now do you....check out his PRESENT or NO VOTE history for yourself.
BUSH VOTING RECORD: 6 years of Bush and a Republican controlled Congress. 2 years of Bush and a Democratic controlled Congress. You do the math.
Yes, the Democratic controlled Congress has not done much good, but the Republican controlled Congress did too much harm.

Exactly! So now McCain thinks we need a change in Washington. He just doesn't understand that change to us means getting rid of him and the other senators-for-life with all the experience who gave Bush a blank check for the last eight years. McCain with his rubber stamp voting record heads the top of that list.

Maybe he should have voted PRESENT a little more often.

Cheney is saber rattling again......Vice President Dick Cheney on Saturday denounced Russia’s war against Georgia as evidence of a pattern of “troublesome and unhelpful actions”......Russia's response? Russia is a state that from now on must be reckoned with,” Mr. Medvedev said. Then he added a message clearly directed toward critics in the United States and Europe:

“They are trying to put political pressure on us. We, of course, will not simply accept this situation. But they will not be able to do anything. And I would like to state as clearly as possible that this confrontation was not our choice.”

The Republicans can't wait to get us into yet another war! Good thing they have a Pitbull like Sarah foaming at the mouth.....what better way to show the world how "formidable" and "tough" she is....

I like Obama and think he's a good guy, but I don't think he has what it takes, especially when our national security is at stake. He's unfortunately too concerned with "offending" our enemies, and looks to be turning a blind eye. The Iraq surge worked and was necessary. Even Obama agrees with this... but he voted against it.

Sarah is smart, tough and makes things happen. She's exactly what we need, and I've never been so excited about a candidate before.

As for the surge. But for the completely unnecessary preemptive war started to chase manufactured false evidence of w.eapons of mass d.estruction, we wouldn't have needed a surge. Are you actually praising Mc Cain for trying to clean up a mess that he and B ush are responsible in the first place?

When it comes to national security... it's always better to be safe than sorry. Bush did what he felt was necessary at the time to keep our country safe. If only Clinton had been as smart. He had the opportunity to capture Osama "before" 9/11... but, he dismissed it, as an act of DIPLOMACY and let him go. The liberals concern for "diplomacy" is what gets us in trouble. You can't be too trusting of your enemies....

Thanks for the suggestion to look up diplomacy in the dictionary. For those that don't know:
1 : the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations
2 : skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility

Actually, she does remind me most of Bush. She has the same kind of "goodfella" appeal, evidently; nobody cares that she was an academic failure or that her resume is short. If I worry at all, it's because I thought Al Gore won the debates in 2000, but the low expectations for Bush meant he was considered the winner. So I don't understand the standards most Americans seem to have.

If you make less than 250,000 your taxes will stay the same and NOT increase
If you make less than 150,000 your taxes will be further reduced in the form of additional tax breaks.
I'm just getting started but how's that for change we can believe in!

Why aren't the dems and the media bringing out that list to dispute the McCain/Palin lies? I think the media fails sadly in this department. For every lie in the republican convention from Palin, Guilianni, Huckabee, Thompson and Romney, the media should have rattled off that list at the end of each of those speeches. I was so put off that they didn't explain one single plan to get this country back on track but rather they spent three days lying about and belittling Obama. And the media didn't do much to set the record straight. Republican politics as usual.

The Empress has no clothes. She is really not attractive. Not too hard to come in second in a beauty contest in a town that has a population of four females, two of which are moose.
