I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Clinton Supporter

In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women -- married and unmarried -- conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin's Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.

First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin's speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address.

The (mostly) anonymous proceedings were webcast live to reporters, who were told in a press release that the Nevada focus groups would include "some former Hillary Clinton supporters who are now undecided or are weak supporters of Barack Obama or John McCain." No party identification was made available, though the approximately two dozen women were reportedly between 30 and 60 years old.

In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she's a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Still not all focus group members thought Palin came off too harsh. "She didn't seem very aggressive to me at all," said one unmarried participant.

But in both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech. "She comes off pretty cutthroat," said one.

On other issues, women in both groups said they wanted to hear more of Palin's own policy views, outside the realm of energy. Education, heath care, the economy and Iraq were all cited as areas in which women were hungry for more information -- especially in light of McCain's age. "I think America is concerned, because of McCain's age, that we're gonna have a female president who's maybe inexperienced. The nation needs to know what her issues are," said one married respondent, which prompted another to add: "I don't think she's got what it takes." An unmarried participant said she had yet to hear enough "in regards to her personal views, which could be implicated on us if McCain was to die."

When prompted to respond to Palin's steadfast opposition to abortion -- even in cases of rape or incest -- no woman in either group stepped forward to defend the Alaskan Republican. "I don't dig that," said one married woman, matter of factly.

But there were other points on which the participants expressed pride in Palin's achievement. "She earned what she's got -- as far as not marrying into it. I like that about her," said one married respondent. "Let's hope she has a good showing," said another who had expressed disappointment over Palin's abortion views.

The groups -- which were coordinated by Anna Greenberg and Stan Greenberg of Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner Research -- were commissioned by the Women's Voices/Women Vote Action Fund, which describes itself as "dedicated to encouraging unmarried women to bring their voices to our nation's political conversation and to advocate for policies important to them."

I can't believe that everyone lauded over her attitude about her daughters pregnancy. How could she be critical about her daughter being pregnant out of wedlock. According to my math, either her son Track was conceived out of wedlock or he was about a month and a half apart. I am sure the kids can do the math when mom and dads anniversary is less than nine months from Track birthday. It would be hypocrisy to criticize the daughter when it is likely she is following in the footsteps of mom. The only difference is that she didn't "elope to save money" like mom and dad.

I called it correctly...they are using her to mirror Obama...they keep comparing her to Obama...logically, it makes no sense when it should be a comparison against Mccain... the majority of the people watched her speech to get an idea of this woman...she is an ok public speaker but her negativity..her lies...her dismissive attitude is a big turn-off. The Republicans love her but they fail to realize their hypocrisy...I don't expect Hillary to come out and support Obama against Palin...why would she(she is holding out for 2012)... Besides, Hillary can't even get some of her supporters to support Obama...If somehow Palin and Mccain win...these PUMAS are going to suffer because Palin doesn't give a heck about the important issues...she is a mouthpiece for Karl Rove...and I expect her to outshine MCCain...the irony of it all makes me want to laugh and cry...These Republicans supported Bush for 8 years and they still haven't learned...It is time out for attacks...what are the plans for our country...your policies...instead it's "haha she shredded Obama" Wow that's what is important...Sorry that doesn't pass my tests...Also, have you noticed how they are trying to hijcack the "change theme"? Too funny, I say Palin keep digging ditches, keep on attacking...we live in a fickle nation....She is not a very good statesman or very smart...Keep killing her with kindness Obama and Biden...

A Heartbeat Away….
The VEEP selection is “Major Decision-Making 101” for presidential candidates; McCain flunked! Before offering her the VP slot, McCain met only once with Palin. He had no personal experience with her character or judgment. McCain's thrown America under the bus with this dangerous, self-serving decision.
Palin, Alaska’s governor for a year and a half (previously mayor of her home town of 5,500, where she was adored as a high school basketball star and a beauty queen), confessed last month she doesn’t know what the Vice-President does. In about 1/3 of U.S. Presidencies, the VP has had to take the reins. The prospect of Palin attempting to lead the U.S. through the current maze of complex international affairs is frightening. Even staunch McCain supporter Joe Lieberman wouldn't answer the "Would you rather see Paulin or Biden face Putin?" question.
McCain’s pick of Palin is utterly offensive and insulting it is to women. In his desperation to win the Presidency, McCain’s move to dupe American female voters through his “Hail Mary” of choosing this unqualified woman as a running mate is resulting in fallacious rhetoric from the Republicans about breaking the glass ceiling. Even though she is the antitheses of everthing Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro stand for, Palin has shamelessly invoked their names in her speeches. Sarah, the 18 million Americans who voted for her know Hillary Clinton; you’re no Hillary Clinton. Roll over Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton!

It's hard to understand how a Democrat for Hilary Clinton could vote for the likes of McSame just because he has a running mate who is biologically female. This is a reason to vote for McCain? Two parties could hardly be more opposite. If McCain - Palin win, they will be choosing the next few Supreme Court judges whose seats are vacant which will tip the court solidly towards the Neocons, ending Roe v Wade and reversing many civil liberties and civil rights rulings. Really ladies, is this what you want to see happen?

Your statement is categorically false and part of the fear mongering designed to keep independent and democratic women from making an informed decision as to whether they will vote for a Obama-Biden ticket or a McCain-Palin ticket.

Out of the 9 Supreme Court Justices, 7 were appointed by Republican administrations and yet Roe Versus Wade has not been overturned thus far. This is not to say that the right wing sector of the Republican base does not want to see Roe vs Wade overturned and McCain definitely supports that agenda. But that doesn't mean that any Supreme Court Justice appointed during a Republican administration will subvert constitutional law due to the political pressure from the right wing Christian majority.

“But that doesn't mean that any Supreme Court Justice appointed during a Republican administration will subvert constitutional law . . .”

Excuse me, I’m not trying to be a wise-ass or anything, but has the constitution been altered to include Roe v. Wade? I thought that this was a decision by the judges of the Supreme Court? If that’s so, then any airhead can write a contrary decision.

I’m not legal, so I’m not sure about this.

What is this about she made it by herself and didn't have anything handed to her?! Her last name is HEATH as in the HEATH candy empire. She went to Alaska with millions of $$ so she didn't do anything to make it on her own except destroy anyone in her path! And yes you right-wing-nuts, we are scared, but we're not scared about having great candidates in Obama/Biden, we're not scared about winning so many more seats in the House and Senate, we're not afraid that our message isn't what Americans want to hear. We are scared because there are so many intellectually bankrupt morons like you out there that would actually CONSIDER putting this shell into office and risking the entire country on the hopes that he doesn't die in office That's what we're scared of! You're too blinded by some damn wedge issue like abortion that will never get overturned because without it no one but the rich would be Republican. You had Republican control of the house, senate and presidency and there wasn't a single bill brought up to overturn Row vs. Wade so how dumb are you to keep basing your vote on a non-issue? Keep voting against your self-interest in your delusional corrupt greeding anti-Christian way. We'll take this Country back without you because there are more of us and we have had ENOUGH!

Where is Hillary?

She needs to come out very strongly and very soon against Palin.

She needs to do this not for Obama, but for her own political future: if Palin becomes VP (or God forbid, President), she is a major threat to Hillary.

Hillary needs to keep her distance from this, It's not her fight she can be there but not in the spot light. The Democrate party turned there back on here and picked Obama ,it's not her fight to win
Obama has to stand on his own two feet and fight John Mccain it's the top of the ticket people, get a grip!!! Sarah did what she was suppose to do no more no less now Obama has to make his case he has had 19 monhts you would think he would have it down buy now, He's got Biden to do his dirty work that's why he took him and not hillary , he should have done the right thing for American and put Hillary on the ticket and we wouldn't be talking about this .Remember it's about Obama and Mccain period.

If Hillary truly cares about the PEOPLE of this nation and the world for that matter and the suffering we've endured for the last 8 years that McC and failin' Palin will most certainly continue, she REALLY needs to help end this nightmare NOW.

I doubt Hillary will be coming out anytime soon. She just gave a speech that will go down in the history books, the smart thing for her and Dems to do, is to wait and let MSM blither and blather on for a few weeks, and then come back with a positive message about policy and the way forward.

This constant criticism of Hillary, who has done more than any other "loser" in history, is really upsetting. Please stop it. If you want us to support Obama, you'll have to start at least not insulting Hillary and the Clintons. Why not try the "she's no Hillary Clinton" tack? Why not also discuss how Hillary appeals to our best sense, our idealism, while Palin and her party appeals to our worst. The anti-intellectualist populism is dangerous.

This woman is a wacko who epitomizes everything that is mean and incompetent in America.

Just remember one fact: she tried to fire the Wasilla librarian for refusing to honor Palin's demand to ban certain library books. That fact alone puts her outside the American tradition.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhjuRMi_78U

Here we go again!

Another "reformer with results" country governor who masks extreme rightwing views and total incompetence with folksiness and platitudes about being "compassionate".

Just another pretty face on the ugly policies of environmental destruction, more subsidies for Big Oil, more wars and hatred abroad, and more partisan warfare and religious extremism at home.

We've had almost eight years to see how valuable 'executive experience' can be, and from what I've read about Palin's tenure in the Mayor's office and then in the Governor's mansion, she seems to have the same 'executive' philosophies.

We don't need another 4 years of an administration that withdraws from the media anytime they're asked an unpleasant question or that kow-tows to the likes of Karl Rove.

I have to agree, though I admit to not giving my entire concentration to the speech. I was struck by a few things:

First and foremost, she didn't convey gravitas. I couldn't imagine her being president of the USA if McCain won and something happened to him.

Second, she didn't seem to have earned a right to speaking with such contempt. I guess I expected a little humility. What I saw was snideness emphasized by her voice.

Third, her voice. This is shallow of me, but she sounded like a caricature from the movie Fargo. She needs to modulate it somehow and fix the nasalness of it.

Fourth, I don't think they should put McCain and her together. The new hairstyle makes her look even younger and together they seem to run into the same type of problem the media identified with Gov. Jindahl. The age gap seems tremendous.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:59 PM on 09/04/2008

Sure I would, only I don't agree that it's really superficial. She can't help how she sounds, but it is all part of the impression we form of a speaker. The voice. The 'look'. The body language. The words spoken and the mannerisms. We all make all sorts of instantaneous unconscious judgments about each other all the time.

The think I take away about the voice is that I am pretty sure I wouldn't want to listen to it very long, and especially for 4-8 years. It's an annoying characteristic, just like someone who says 'um' a lot.

YMMV.
